Zustand: Sehr gut. Original wrappers, 88 pages plus 34 plates, including 8 in colour, private title label on the spine, very good condition. Tibet House was formally opened on 26 October 26 1965, by Education Minister M.C. Chagla, and the late prime minister`s daughter, Indira Gandhi, who was then Information minister. The first museum objects were purchased with a grant made by the CIA to the Dalai Lama`s brother Gyalo Thondup especially for this purpose (compare John Knaus, Orphans of the Cold War. America and the Tibetan Struggle for Survival, New York 1999, p. 287: "Tibet House was one of the more lasting tangible contributions that CIA made to the Tibetans." This is catalogue of the first exhibition in the museum, published for the museum`s opening. The museum housed at that time 38 thangkas, 42 statues and 59 ritual and household objects. It was an official undertaking by the Government in Exile. There are some complete sets of thangkas, like a 9 thangka set of the 16 Arhats or another 9 thangka set of the 84 Mahasiddhas. Exhibition of objects donated (and purchased) by exiled Tibetans to this museum in exile, to make a presence at New Delhi. Including a seven thangkas set of Longdol Lama, one of which is illustrated, with detailed iconographic description of the whole set. Same for a 7 thangkas series of the principal events in the life of Lord Buddha. With a remarkable photo of the Jobo in the Jokhang at Lhasa, looking quite differently than the well known old photographs, e.g. by Jisl. Preface by the Dalai Lama.
