Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. A first printing of the true first edition, with no mention of further printings on the printer's page. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright and the boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of the spine slightly creased, otherwise no serious creasing or bumping to the edges of the boards. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges slightly marked, with a small abrasion to the bottom edge slightly creasing a few pages. Internally also very good with no ownership inscriptions. Pages clean with no internal foxing, with some small edge creases in a few places (please see scans). The illustrated endpapers show the Location of Forced-labour Camps in the Soviet Union. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, but has a publisher's £9.50 net re-price sticker over the original printed price on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears, just some light rubbing and creasing at the edges, with some nibbling to the lower edge of the inner back flap. No fading even to the sun-sensitive colour on the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***463 pages including a section of Notes, and an extensive Index at the back of the book. 242mm x 160mm. ***'Count Nikolai Dmitrievich Tolstoy-Miloslavsky FRSL (born 23 June 1935), better known as Count Nikolai Tolstoy, is a British historian and writer. He is a former parliamentary candidate of the UK Independence Party and is the current nominal head of the House of Tolstoy, an aristocratic Russian family.' (Wiki) ***'Drawing on much new evidence, as well as analysis of that which is already known but overlooked, Nikolai Tolstoy examines afresh the mainsprings of Soviet policy, both internal and external, in the dangerously critical years between 1938 and 1945'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first printing of the first edition of this study of Stalin and the and Soviet policy during the Second World War, in very good condition. We also have a second printing of the true first edition listed on ABE, which has a revised design to the spine of the dustwrapper (see comparative scan). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First UK Edition. First printing of the first UK edition. The author's third published book of short stories. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. Tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean but tanned as usual. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean but heavily tanned as usual (cheap paper stock used). No foxing. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips, tears or creases. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***281 pages. 224mm x 145mm. ***'By turns humorous and warm, stark and frightening, "Bluebeard's Egg" glows with childhood memories, the reality of parents growing old, and the casual cruelty men and women inflict on each other. Here is the familiar outer world of family summers at remote lakes, winters of political activism, and seasons of exotic friends, mundane lives, and unexpected loves. But here too is the inner world of hidden places and all that emerges from them - the intimately personal, the fantastic, the shockingly real. Whether it's what lives in a mysterious locked room or the secret feelings we all conceal.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'"Bluebeard's Egg" is a collection of short stories by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, first published in 1983. The book's first American edition was released in 1986 under the name "Bluebeard's Egg and other stories". In this collection, Atwood explores the politics of sex and heterosexual relationships, examining the emotions, betrayals, and casualties of such relationships. Four of the stories in the collection depart from this theme to instead present presumably autobiographic ruminations on the narrator's childhood influences. The majority of these stories are set in downtown Toronto.' (Wiki) ***First printing of the first UK edition, in its original dustwrapper, in near fine, bright condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Diana Overton (Jacket design) (illustrator).…

Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Top edge of page block stained black by the publisher - slightly faded. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Spine tight with no reading lean. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £1.75 net. There is a vertical crease to the fore-edge of the front flap. ***223mm x 145mm. 246 pages. ***'Terry Southern knows and understands the aspirations of would-be hipsters, on-the-ball journalists, failed bullfighters and war veterans. Whether recreating a crazy car journey in Mexico, staging a hilarious drama with Kafka and Freud, speculating on the bizarre possibilities for blood transfusions or interviewing a faggot male nurse, he is an addictive storyteller, wise, cruel and funny. The stories in this collection, written over a twelve-year period, both speak for and send up their times.' Dustwrapper bright. ***183 pages. 224mm x 145mm. ***'Lisa St Aubin de Terán was born in 1953 (to Joan Mary Murray and Jan Carew) and brought up in Clapham in South London. She attended James Allen's Girls' School. Her memoir, Hacienda (1998), describes how she fell into a whirlwind first marriage to an exiled Venezuelan landowner, Jaime Terán, and lived for seven years at a remote farm in the Andean region of Venezuela.' (which this novel was based on) ***'"Keepers of the House" is the debut novel of Lisa St Aubin de Terán, published as "The Long Way Home" in the US. The novel is autobiographical and set in a Venezuelan valley beset by drought. First published in 1982 by Jonathan Cape it won the Somerset Maugham Award. ***Synopsis - The story concerns Lydia an Englishwoman who has married Diego, the second to last survivor of the Beltrán family. They return to La Bebella, a dilapidated mansion on a neglected estate upon which years of drought and disease have taken their toll. Only Benito, her husband's retainer, remains and when her husband becomes depressed and a virtual recluse, Lydia has to take on the management of the estate with its sparse avocado and sugar cane crops. Benito recounts to her the history of the family and its gradual decline and it is this history and the characters concerned which forms the bulk of the narrative. (Wiki) ***A second printing of Lisa St Aubin de Terán's first novel, with the scarce publisher's wraparound band present. Uncommon thus. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Jenny Tylden-Wright (Jacket design) (illustrator).…
