Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Originally published in Spanish in 1967, The Great Zoo by the Afro-Cuban poet NicolaáI p1 ss GuilleáI p1 sn (1902-1989) is a wry political project structured as though a fantastical bestiary of ideas and ideologies. Parodying the perceived authority and objectivity of zoological grammar, the poems present taxonomic-imagistic descriptions of caged entities in the voice of a dispassionate zoo tour guide explaining to the reader-as-visitor what appears inside each enclosure. These captive inhabitants include the Mississippi and Amazon Rivers as transmogrified snakes; a winged, singing guitar; clouds from around the world; a temperamental atomic bomb; blue-pelted police; and a bloodthirsty KKK. Newly translated by Aaron Coleman with a keen eye toward histories of colonial racialization, oppression, and exoticism, this bilingual edition of The Great Zoo establishes a creative mode in which the authority of language born of racial-colonial regimes in the so-called New World is critically, at times even comically, exposed and rewritten'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Angell, Tony (illustrator). Neuware - 'From morning to night and from the forest to the desert, what do frogs do all day In this short book, celebrated biologist Marty Crump shows readers exactly how frogs spend their time. Each chapter covers a single frog during a single hour, highlighting twenty-four different species from around the globe. At midnight in Indonesia, we hear the rustle of leaves above. It's not a bird, but Wallace's flying frog, using its webbed feet and emerald-green skin flaps to glide through the forest canopy. Other amphibians might hide from the morning sun, but not Madagascar's orange-red tomato frog. If its showy coloration doesn't discourage predators, a sticky mucus-powerful enough to glue a snake's jaws together-provides a means of escape. At dusk, in a Peruvian rain forest, we see a giant spider-a hairy tarantula-and what looks like a tiny amphibian pet taking shelter in its burrow. Other frogs make a tasty meal for this tarantula, but the dotted humming frog is a friend, eating the ants that might otherwise make a meal of the tarantula's eggs. For each chapter, award-winning artist Tony Angell has depicted these scenes with his signature pen and ink illustrations. Working closely together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Crump and Angell have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two-and a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and all frog fans'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Our civilization has the odd habit of printing books full of lines. We call these not Elektronisches Buch 'ruled'. It's an orderly, lawful word, as befits an orderly, lawful document. Of course, in a ruled notebook, the rules are there to invite writing, drawing, and thinking. The rules are riverbanks, and the river flowing between them is whatever you want it to be. How might changing the lines change the flow of thoughts between them What if the straight parallels gave way to curves, clusters, and criss-crosses What if the once-identical pages began to individuate and develop personalities What ideas might come to life, if the rules grew unruly Mathematics, liked line not Elektronisches Buch, does not enjoy a reputation for playful spontaneity. If you want to create an unruly notebook for nonstandard thoughts, it might seem that algebra is the last place you'd turn. But creativity is not (as we sometimes imagine) a matter of shaking off all constraints. It is about playing against them. We need rules, if only for the sake of breaking them. Plotted, written, and overruled by mathematicians, educators, and popularizers Tim Chartier and Amy Langville, and with a foreword by Ben Orlin, this book reveals math's creative side. We will see how straight lines can form fractal crenelations; how circles can disrupt and unify; how waves can create complex landscapes and famous faces. The rules of mathematics, this book shows, are like the rules of a notebook: invitations to play'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Indexing A-Z from The Chicago Manual of Style-the undisputed authority for style, usage, and grammar. In this age of searchable text, the need for an index made with human input is sometimes questioned. But a good index can do what a plain search cannot: It gathers all the substantive terms and subjects of the work, sorts them alphabetically, provides cross-references to and from related terms, and includes specific page numbers or other locators or, for electronic formats, direct links to the text. This painstaking intellectual labor serves readers of any longer work, whether it is searchable or not. For searchable texts, an index provides insurance against fruitless queries and unintended results. In a word, a good index makes the text more accessible. Most book indexes must be assembled swiftly between the time page proofs are issued and the time they are returned to the typesetter-usually about four weeks. An author preparing their own index will have to proofread as well as index the work in that short time span. This insightful chapter-length booklet will guide both professionals and first-time indexers in assembling an index that will do justice to both the book and the reader.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'In 2014, the University of Chicago put itself at the center of a nationwide controversy on college campuses that has only grown more pressing: the issue of free speech. As increasingly extreme right-wing speakers gained prominent public platforms, students took to the streets of their campuses, protesting and preventing such speakers from using their platforms on campus. Then-provost and president J. D. Isaacs and Robert Zimmer released a statement now known as the Chicago Principles, which have since been adopted or endorsed by 84 US colleges and universities. These principles offer a moral and legal foundation for protecting the speech of even those who amplify, endorse, or perpetuate ideas some consider odious or harmful. The rest is history-though, importantly, one that predates the Chicago Principles. The University of Chicago has become such a major player in the realm of campus free speech debates that it opened a new Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression in the fall of 2023, to build upon the University's proud tradition of academic freedom. One of the Forum's first initiatives was to publish an anthology of UChicago statements on free expression, along with contextualizing commentary from volume editors Tony Banout and Tom Ginsburg. The pieces in this volume capture the complex but consistent endorsement of the right to free speech on campus that Chicago has come to represent in the public eye. With reports and speeches from the University ranging from 1900 to 2021, this collection will serve as a living and evolving document as debates over academic freedom evolve, both within the UChicago community and well beyond'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Jolanda Insana (1937-2016) is a Sicilian poet who has long been under-recognized outside of Italy, and Catherine Theis's stellar translation of Insana's first full collection, Slashing Sounds, is the first book-length English-language edition of the poet's work. Originally published as Fendenti fonici in 1982, these poems channel an idiosyncratic, albeit carefully curated, Sicilian dialect that Insana used to capture the vernacular life and street-level spirit of the region. Through this specific voice, Insana nevertheless finds a full spectrum of possibilities for human expression-the vulgarity, hilarity, intimacy, and outrage of a population expressed through its slang, obscenities, and terms of endearment. Insana's daring, fiercely embodied work pushes the boundaries of the notion of poetry as an elitist institution. What makes Slashing Sounds so immensely satisfying is its irreverence toward all forms of literary piety whatsoever: these poems are as subversive, snarky, and funny as they were over forty years ago, and the result is a book that feels utterly and perennially contemporary'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'On November 22, 1947, a fifteen-year-old prodigy from colonial Algeria named Baya exhibited her paintings and clay sculptures at the Parisian gallery of the art dealer Aimâe Maeght. Her opening attracted some of the most influential cultural figures of postwar Paris, including Albert Camus, Andrâe Breton, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque. Alice Kaplan's biography begins on that November day, in that gallery, then moves from Baya's beginnings as a farmworker to her Parisian triumph, through her death in Algeria in 1998, by then a cultural icon of independent Algeria. Orphaned at age nine, Baya was working on a flower farm when she caught the eye of a French woman, Marguerite Caminat, whose interest in the girl changed her life. The relationship of support and affection between the indigenous Algerian artist and her French mentor was fraught with ambiguity. Baya worked as Caminat's maid but came to see herself as the woman's adoptive daughter; Caminat nurtured Baya's gift and saw the child as the artist she herself once aspired to be. The French press of 1947 celebrated the young artist with all the predictable clichâes: the orphan rescued by the white fairy godmother, the wild child civilized, the ignorant genius on display. In Seeing Baya: Portrait of an Algerian Artist in Paris, Kaplan considers the differences that Baya makes to the stories we have told about modern art and postwar culture in France. She unravels the human sentiments at play in this history, from the noble to the venal to the obscure, and probes the motivations of the characters surrounding Baya, scrutinizing them from different angles as they respond to the singular itinerary of the young artist. Seeing Baya reveals a fascinating and significant life, one of survival, resistance, and irrepressible talent'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Burden of Rhyme gives a new account of Victorian poetry and its place in the field of literary studies. A work of historical poetics, it shows how nineteenth-century notions about the origin of rhyme shaped the theory and practice of poetry in the period. For Victorians, rhyme was not (as it was for the New Critics) a mere technique or ahistorical form. Rather, Naomi Levine argues, it carried rich historical associations, harkening to a vividly imagined medieval past. Victorian poets thus had in rhyme a sensitive historiographic instrument, one they could use to activate ideas about love, loss, longing, poetry, and modernity. The Burden of Rhyme will appeal to readers of Alfred Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Morris, and even Ezra Pound, as well as scholars working in the history of criticism'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'It was the strangest of experiments. What began as a utopian environment, where mice had sumptuous accommodations, all the food and water they could want, and were free from disease and predation, turned into a mouse hell. Science writer and animal behaviorist Lee Alan Dugatkin reintroduces readers to the bizarre and compelling work of rodent researcher John Bumpass Calhoun. In this enthralling tale of Calhoun and his work, Dugatkin shows how an ecologist-turned-psychologist-turned-futurist became a science rock star embedded in the culture of the 1960s and 1970s, courted by city planners, written about in everything from Tom Wolfe's hard-hitting novels to the children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, invited to meetings with the Royal Society and the Pope, and taken seriously when he proposed a worldwide cybernetic brain. Readers see how Calhoun's experiments-rodent apartment complexes like 'Mouse Universe 25'-led to his concept of 'behavioral sinks' with real effects on public policy discussions of his day. Overpopulation in Calhoun's mouse complexes led to loss of sex drive, absence of maternal care, and a population of automatons, in Calhoun's words, 'capable only of the most simple behaviors compatible with physiological survival.' Calhoun-and the others who followed his work-saw this mouse population collapse as a harbinger for an overpopulated human world. Calhoun saw future rodent experiments on culture and cooperation as one solution. Including previously unpublished archival research and informed by interviews with Calhoun's family and former colleagues, Dugatkin offers a probing, fast-moving account of an intriguing scientific figure and in so doing, examines the changing nature of scientific research and the lasting impact of Dr. Calhoun's mousery'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Postpartum depression and mental illness were long considered unfit for the public, psychological, or political discussion. Women were typically told their 'baby blues' weren't important-or that they were failing as mothers. As Rachel Louise Moran shows, bringing these serious and common challenges into the open didn't just happen. It took activists, medical professionals, and countless everyday mothers to speak the unspeakable: motherhood is hard, and its burdens are often both heavy and unfair. Moran's groundbreaking work situates the changing cultural understanding of postpartum within larger women's health movements in America--a discussion that has constantly shifted amid the country's broader cultural and political transformations'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Border walls, bathrooms in schools, student loans, gun control, diversity, abortion, climate change-today, nothing seems out of reach for the president's pen. But after all the press releases, ceremonies, and speeches, shockingly little gets done. The American presidency promises to solve America's problems, but presidents' unilateral solutions are often weak or empty. In this provocative new book, Kenneth Lowande argues this is no accident. The US political system is not set up to allow presidents to solve major policy problems. Yet, it lays these problems at their doorstep, and there is no other elected official better positioned to attract attention by appearing to govern. Like any politician, presidents are strategic actors who seek symbolic wins. They pursue executive actions, even when they know that these will fail, because doing so allows them to put on a compelling show for key constituencies. But these empty presidential actions are not costless: they divert energy from effective government-and, over time, undermine public trust. Drawing on thousands of executive actions, news coverage, interviews, and presidential archives, Lowande shows the root of presidents' real power is what presidents can get away with not doing'.

These items, which found their ways into classrooms and onto the airwaves, promoted a distinctive conservatism under the cloaks of public service and civic education, linking and defining such protean terms as 'the American way of life' and 'free enterprise.' Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Of the Americans who have died of COVID-19, 20% have been elderly people residing in nursing facilities--even though they make up less than a percent of the overall US population. Throughout the pandemic, several argued that there was nothing to be done about the people dying in these facilities; they felt that, given the higher likelihood of serious disease and death among that population, younger, able-bodied, and more economically productive members of society should be prioritized instead. Meanwhile, elderly folks continued to be neglected. As Margaret Morganroth Gullette shows, nothing about this tragedy was inevitable. Gullette, an activist and scholar, argues that it was our collective indifference, fueled by ageism, that killed our elderly population, compounded by our fear of and disgust toward aging and our cultural enshrinement of youth-based decisions about life-saving care, even before sufficient data was available. Walking us through the decisions that lead to such discrimination, revealing how governments and media reinforced ageist biases, and collecting the ignored voices of the elderly, Gullette helps us understand the makings of what she powerfully calls an 'eldercide.' A chronicle of how ageism turned lethal, this book is an act of remembrance and a call to action that aims to prevent a similar outcome in the next pandemic'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'A compelling and timely history, Green Lands for White Men explores how white farmers in southern Africa grappled with arid environments and climate change as they sought to consolidate white dominance over the Black majority. In the early twentieth century, white southern Africans engaged in bitter disputes over the reality of climate change and its consequences. Many whites argued that rainfall was declining and that if they did not do something about it, the subcontinent would become a desert and white civilization in the region would collapse. The believers in climate apocalypse found their savior in Ernest Schwarz, a geology professor who promised that diverting rivers into the Kalahari would restore southern Africa's once-rainy climate, creating newly greened lands for the settlement of millions of whites and securing the future of a 'white man's country' in Africa. Green Lands for White Men uses the story of this popular (though fortunately unrealized) attempt to engineer southern Africa's climate and racial order to examine the agrarian roots of apartheid in the mid-twentieth century. We live in a time of growing climate catastrophe, public mistrust of scientific experts, and emboldened white nationalism. In this book we witness this on another continent and in another century and see how these apparently unrelated factors came together to reinforce a worldview that proved highly resistant to argumentation and challenge by scientists'.

According to Ziporyn, the spiritual maladies of humankind are not due to a lack of God, but because we have a choice between either God or a halfway atheism. What we need, Ziporyn asserts, is a deep and thoroughgoing atheism, or a form of atheistic mysticism: not the humanistic rejection of religion, but the religious rejection of God. Atheistic mysticism may seem counterintuitive, but Otherwise than God is an argument for its existence and importance. Drawing on critiques of monotheist premises found in Spinoza, Nietzsche, Bataille, and various Daoist and Buddhist thinkers, Ziporyn first analyzes the entailments of the monotheist cultural complex. These figures and traditions serve as guides in a quest to overcome the impasse between theomania and meaning-starved secular empiricism. Ziporyn then works through the positive proposals of some of these thinkers in search of alternatives. Otherwise than God excavates what the 'offending' premises of monotheism are (for those whom it offends) and reveals what possibilities open up if we suspend those premises'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Our teenage years are a uniquely vulnerable and formative time as we lay the foundations for the people we will become. Our relationships with our peers, our families, and our mentors all shape these critical years, but one institution looms large, shaping our days and guiding our futures: school. This achingly sensitive book from sociologist Nora Gross examines what happens in a group of young men's lives after three of their peers die by gun violence. Looking to their interactions at and beyond school, as well as their vibrant lives online, Gross shows what happens when a school with the mission of supporting young Black men into college confronts the realities of their living amid gun violence. Initially, the school administration and teachers responded both through personal outreach (cookies, hugs, and memorials) and institutional resources (more lenient policies and two therapists from an anti-violence organization). This, Gross tells us, is the 'easy hard.' When pain is fresh, so is empathy. But as the immediate shock began to fade, teachers and administrators were faced with mandated testing on the horizon and the school's charter on the line, pushing a return to normalcy. Collective mourning was no longer a school-sponsored activity, and the initial sense of community gave way to factions: those teachers who made space for grief, and those who pushed for a return to normal. These are the days Gross calls the 'hard hard.' As the school year wore on, routines of daily life did resume, inaugurating a period Gross calls the 'hidden hard,' when students' unresolved grief is pushed into private spaces by the expectation of normalcy and the mythology around the boys' resilience. Most students continued to grieve silently and on their phones, with social media as their primary space for self-expression. These students were checking out through substance use, unable to plan for the future, and seeking solidarity through posts expressing their grief and checking in on each other-all reactions that their teachers and administrators failed to register. From these moments of pain and comfort, Gross highlights meaningful ways we can support young people as they navigate loss'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The technology at the center of this book marks a milestone in computing history. Until the late nineteenth century, naval gun crews aimed and fired at virtually point-blank ranges, but as warship speeds and battle ranges grew, it became necessary to predict where the target would be when a projectile landed. Two British civilian inventors, Arthur Pollen and Harold Isherwood, insisted that the only way to predict with sufficient speed and accuracy to enable hits in battle was to incorporate all the relevant variables into mathematical equations and to develop instruments for solving them instantaneously and continuously. This insight led them to build an integrated, gyro-stabilized system for gathering data, calculating predictions, and transmitting the results to the gunners. At the heart of their system was the most advanced analog computer of the day. In addition to being a landmark technological achievement, Pollen and Isherwood's invention also took on legal significance. Its value was so evident that first Britain's Royal Navy and then the US Navy paid them the compliment of pirating it. The inventors' attempts to gain compensation in the courts had rippling effects on how the two leading liberal societies of the modern era struggled to reconcile their ideological commitment to private property rights with the perceived imperatives of national security. Their story shows that the modern American national-security state and secrecy regime, which are often associated with atomic energy during the mid-twentieth century, had longer, trans-Atlantic roots. It also shows that the United States, in its rise to global hegemony, relied heavily on the acquisition of British technology by fair means or foul-much as Americans accuse China of doing to the United States today'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - '1989 is an iconic date, one we associate with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War-a date that prompts some to rue the defeat for socialism in the East while others celebrate a victory for democracy and capitalism in the re-unified Germany. Remembering 1989 focuses on a largely forgotten 'interregnum' between these: the months between the outbreak of protests in the German Democratic Republic in 1989 and its absorption by the West in 1990. Anke Pinkert, who herself participated on those protests, recalls these months as a volatile but joyous 'laboratory of radical democracy,' and tells the story of how and why this 'time out of joint' has been erased from Germany's national memory. Drawing on rich archives including videotapes of untelevised protests, illegally printed petitions by Church leaders, audio recordings of dissident meetings, and interview footage with military troops, Pinkert opens the discarded history of East European social uprisings to new interpretations and imagines alternatives to Germany's neoliberal status quo. The result is a vivid, unexpected contribution to memory studies and European history'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Ethnomusicologist Paul F. Berliner has been studying Zimbabwean mbira for more than fifty years. When he first arrived in what was then Rhodesia shortly after the nation declared independence from the United Kingdom, he met Cosmas Magaya, an mbira player who would become his teacher and life long collaborator. This book chronicles the early years of Magaya's life, documenting the master mbira player's journey from child prodigy to established expert. As a child, Magaya was immersed in mbira music through his father's work as a healer and spirit medium. As Magaya grew, so, too, did his world; his performances extended beyond the family compound as his skill and knowledge increased, bringing him into contact with a rapidly changing society fraught with colonial conflict. Following Magaya's childhood, we see how his upbringing guided his journey through the community's social networks and how his early sensibilities, proclivities, and talents shaped his development. At the same time, his deepening engagement with music and the ancestors had unforeseen consequences as he grappled with the overlapping tensions in Rhodesia between Shona cosmology and Christian ideology, rural and urban lifestyles, and the escalating African nationalist struggle and the white supremacist state. Interlaced with tales of his unfolding relationships with family members and mbira experts, accounts of his experiences as a learner teach readers how to listen to the mbira, coming as he did to hear ever-finer details in the music's richly layered patterns and to discover its implicit principles, values, and forms. Berliner's vividly narrated account is accompanied by QR codes that take readers directly to recordings of music as Magaya learns it, and linocut illustrations by South African artist Lucas Bambo bring the narrative to life. Berliner has also included appendices for musicians interested in learning or improving their own mbira playing. The book will be a welcome window onto the transmission of musical culture in Shona society, inviting the reader into the very tradition it recounts'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'LeRoy Neiman's story cuts a fascinating swath through the highs and lows-personal, professional, and cultural-of America over 90 years. He became a household name, his artwork saturated American culture for decades, and he rose high enough to be a pop culture punchline. Neiman was a keen self-promoter, saying later in life that even he didn't know who the real LeRoy Neiman was, but that all the fame and money that came his way was worth it. In this first biography of this captivating and off-putting man, Travis Vogan hunts for the real Neiman amid the America that made him'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Ana Lucia Araujo's Humans in Shackles is an Atlantic cultural history of slavery in the Americas that sets out to redress the imbalances of existing general histories of slavery by centering on the lived experience of enslaved men and women. In this panoramic book, Araujo provides a humanistic, narrative history that explores in detail the social, cultural, and religious dimensions of the lives of bondspeople. She surveys the trajectories of men, women, and children from Africa to the Americas, examining how European powers reached Africa, how they traded with various African societies, and how Africans were captured, transported to the coast, and taken across the Atlantic Ocean in the hold of slave ships. The book further explores African captives' working conditions in plantations and urban areas; how bondspeople built families despite the abuses they suffered; and how enslaved people congregated, recreated their cultures and religions, and organized rebellions. The book draws not only on a large array of primary sources-travel accounts, pamphlets, newspapers articles, slave ship logs, fugitive slave advertisements, slave narratives, wills, laws, and correspondence in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish-but it also incorporates visual sources such as engravings, photographs, watercolors, artifacts, monuments, and heritage sites. Humans in Shackles is a testament to the more than twenty years the author has spent studying the history of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. Ultimately, it argues that the long era in which humans racialized as Black were placed in shackles is indispensable to understanding the construction of the Americas'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'This institutional history of the University of Chicago, as told by the longtime dean of the college, thoroughly engages with the history and the lived politics of the university. Boyer is both sweeping and precise in relating battles over finance, policy, and vision that shaped this legendary and groundbreaking institution. He details, too, some of the university's failures and weak periods. Boyer's tale is filled with larger-than-life-characters--John D. Rockefeller, Robert Maynard Hutchins, and many less famous figures among them--and episodes that reveal the establishment and rise of today's institution. Newly updated, this edition extends through the presidency of Robert Zimmer, whose long tenure was marked by significant developments and controversies over subjects as varied as free speech, medical inequity, and community relations'-- Provided by publisher.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'In Beyond Good and Evil, Friedrich Nietzsche announced his project to develop a philosophy of the future that would equip philosophers to better deal with human reality. He was only able to work on that project for two years, however, before he ceased publishing in 1888. In Nietzsche Pursued, Richard Schacht provides a comprehensive picture of this philosophy of the future as far as Nietzsche envisioned it and pursues it further along lines that Nietzsche himself might have taken. Focusing on the philosopher's most important writings from the years before and after Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Schacht explicates a number of Nietzsche's developing interests and ideas. These include the naturalistic elements of Nietzsche's thought, perspectivism, morality and normativity, his concept of 'will to power,' and more. Together, these components set the agenda for the kinds of analytical and interpretive thinking Nietzsche has in mind for future philosophers. Schacht also confronts aspects of Nietzsche's thinking that are problematic and must be reckoned with in pursuing his kind of philosophy. Nietzsche Pursued illuminates Nietzsche's final project, carving a space for it in the history of philosophy and calling for its inclusion in the ongoing philosophy of the future'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The essential work from the Nobel Prize-winning virtuoso of twentieth-century economics, translated to English for the first time. Since Adam Smith developed a verbal theory of how the economy worked, economists have used mathematical equations to try to model such terms. Few figures advanced this frontier more than twentieth-century French economist Maurice Allais, whose sweeping intellectual contributions earned the Nobel Prize for economics and drew comparisons to the works of Leon Walras to Vilfredo Pareto. Allais's formidable accomplishments have been largely unread by non-Francophone readers due to the challenge of their translation; the works' technical erudition and occasional density have vexed generations of translators and publishers. The effects of this gap are immeasurable. As Paul Samuelson wrote, 'Had Allais's earliest writings been in English, a whole generation of economic theory would have taken a different course.' Economy and Interest is the milestone translation of Allais's most influential and acclaimed work, one whose staggering original findings predate their accepted formulations by other famed economists decades later. In its sweep and technical virtuosity, along with its fundamental rewriting of how neoclassical economics were formulated, is certain to stagger, delight, and challenge new generations of English-language readers.'.
