Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A collection of essays about the body.but don't let that put you off. Like the late Nora Ephron's fabulous book of reckoning with her aging body--I Hate My Neck--this witty, sometimes-hilarious manuscript turns the category of body books on its, well, ear. The essays have various points of departure--Jewish feet, posture, hair, autopsies. Some explore the problem of having a body; how to live in a woman's body; in a Jew's body. What does it mean to have the body as a proxy for the soul Some of the essays are interested in the disposition of the body under emotional or physical duress: for example, 'Pocketing' archly explores the myth that shoplifting is a distinctly female activity, even a mania linked to the womb. 'Debutante, Dowager, Beggar' is a sad, funny story about Shinner's uptight mother, a binge eater and Dr. Spock devotee, who, like many American women in the fifties, worried herself sick about posture, especially that of her daughter's and how rounded shoulders would undermine her ability to succeed in life. 'Family Feet' takes a look at feet through the often-skewed lens of history, and discovers that Shinner's flat-footed specimens are, according to some, decidedly and disturbingly Jewish, 'The Fitting(s)' breasts, and the storied bra fitte Ida Rosenthal, founder of Maidenform. 'Post-Mortem,' an essay about autopsies, looks at the body at rest, or presumably at rest, and asks the question, from a confused and grieving daughter's point of view, what does it mean to cut the body open To take a peek inside And 'Berenice's Hair' is a reeling time-trip through myth, culture, and history, looking at women's hair from ancient Rome to present-day India, with stops in Laos, France, Syria, Cuba, the United States.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The mystique of Wrigley Field perhaps America s most celebrated ballpark and among the most controversial comes under the microscope in Stuart Shea s meticulous examination of its history, culture, and meaning. Both loving and cold-eyed, Shea s history digs into the fiscal maneuverings that led to the rise and fall of various ownership regimes (and the decade upon decade of on-field failure), and it details the physical changes to the park over time. Shea elaborates on the cultural and social transformations evident in the evolution of Wrigley, tying them to changes in national food and alcohol cultures, labor relations, and conceptions of urban identity. Next year marks Wrigley s 100th anniversary.'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In The Common Cause, Leela Gandhi reconsiders the history of democracy in the first half of the twentieth century through the lens of ethics in the broad sense of disciplined self-fashioning. Gandhi recovers the stories of Indians and others who refused the spoils of anticolonial nationalism and spiritually embraced an alternative democracy, including the best that Europe itself had to offer. She identifies, on the one hand, a heroic ethic of moral perfectionism shared across imperialism, fascism, and new liberalism--an ethic notably contemptuous of the ordinary and the unexceptional. On the other hand, and the main focus of her book, is an ethic of moral imperfectionism --a set of anticolonial, antifascist practices devoted to ordinariness, indeed abnegation, and ranging from doomed mutinies in the Indian military to Mahatma Gandhi s spiritual discipline. These oppositional practices, Leela Gandhi argues, made common cause both with the victims and abettors of social injustice by defending the former and reforming the latter. Her book elegantly recovers the elusive history of moral imperfectionism, offering it to us as a lost tradition of democratic thought and as a key to its future elaboration. Euro-American opinion holds that democracy is a uniquely Western property and inheritance. In contrast, Gandhi s book claims a global provenance for democracy as a shared art of living on the other side of perfection. It mounts a postcolonial appeal for an ethics of becoming common.'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In 'Frontier Seaport,' Catherine Cangany looks at the economy, culture, and politics of colonial Detroit to better understand its coexistence in both the Atlantic world and the frontier. Although Detroit s frontier associations have been well documented, Cangany argues that Detroit s Atlantic connections were thoroughly established by the mid-eighteenth century despite the settlement s 650-mile separation from the east coast and rivaled those of more cosmopolitan spaces. Drawing on business records, customs and port papers, personal and commercial correspondence, visual images, and much else, Cangany demonstrates that Detroit s positioning as a successful yet remote fur-trading center in fact hastened its economic and cultural incorporation into the broader Atlantic world. Located at the heart of the Great Lakes, inhabited and fought over by three world powers, and within easy reach of furs and fur-suppliers, Detroit occupied a geographically desirable and financially profitable niche in the fur trade. This position in turn made it prone to regular influxes of eastern merchants and other transplants, who brought with them their transatlantic commercial networks and their desire for and access to popular culture and merchandise. By considering frontier and Atlantic together, and by parsing Detroit s political, commercial, and cultural ties to each, Canganyforces a reimagining of early America and its relationship with empire.'.
