In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - ''Blue in Green'is a book that is equal parts subtle intelligence and generosity of heart. In it, Chiyuma Elliott creates a unique voice that returns again and again to the question of what we expect from one another, and how that question is transformed instead into a question of what we owe each other. This notion of reversal plays out in the construction of the poems where, unlike so many of her contemporaries who come to poetry through prose techniques, Elliott's voice emerges through a complex shifting of phrase and syntax between lines or in mid-phrase. We don't, for example, get a straight-forward story of what caused the trauma of, say, cancer or abuse; rather, we hear impressions, half-formed ideas that rise and fall in the speaker's voice as it moves through the nature of the trauma, and experience the effects of the disorder that is the center of our everyday relationships through speech. Put another way: when a crisis overshadows the ordinary, disrupting the collective labor that we pursue together in love, friendship, and work, the hardship itself, in a kind of role-reversal, becomes a collaborator, necessitating new conceptions of relationships and proposing new modes of engagement, different rules of exchange. The book's forms also reflect this transformed idea of reciprocity: ekphrastic poems, normally reserved for visual artworks, instead describe modern jazz songs (including the title poem); letters and letter fragments are written to no one in particular, to the planet, to the universe; and highly allusive free verse poems defy convention with troubled, wildly variable line lengths. The phrase 'When I was a wave' recurs throughout the book in unpredictable places, sometimes as a title, sometimes in the middle of a poem, each time telling a different story about expectation, intimacy, and the risk inherent in any relationship. 'Blue in Green' is a graceful, tough-minded, beautifully crafted collection, full of wit and elegance'.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - ''The Missing Mountain'describes a long, distinguished career as both a poet and teacher. It highlights all the things that we've come to depend on in Michael Collier's poetry: his wide range of reference, his ability to formulate surprising connections, and his depth of intelligence and emotion. Where most contemporary poets look for the metaphorical in the literal, Collier does the opposite: he takes a hard look at 'how things actually are,' giving readers a crystal clear view of his observations, from fraught relations between family members and between lovers, to pedophilic priests and the ethics of beekeeping, to explorations in the densest of forests, ruminations into the most forbidding of deserts, and down to the terrors of the bottom of the ocean. In the section of new poems, Collier turns to the other animals who share our planet. Here we find an array of recognizable characters: an irascible stray cat with an unlikely dependent, an opossum; an imperious-if clueless-dog; a sage, world-weary goat; and the touching domesticity of bluebirds. So much could we learn from our fellow creatures, if we tried; and, after all the centuries of human consumption, how little we've actually learned from each other:'If they would stay just where they are all morning,' Collier writes of some industrious crows he chances upon in a clearing, 'they'd be the monument to the history they're looking for.' This new and selected poems represents the best of what Phoenix Poets has strived for over the years: nonconformity to prevailing trends in literary culture, a poetry attuned to a world external to the self and shared with others, in language that tries to engage the full range of our faculties and sensibilities, bringing the widest range of consciousness to bear upon the widest range of experience'.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'There is no one quite like Lloyd Schwartz, whose unique combination of comedy and pathos is rare in contemporary American poetry. Over the years and books, Schwartz has developed a pitch-perfect ear for dialogue, producing poems that are hilarious in their depiction of unsettling social situations, while still managing to find the kernel of poignancy buried in everyday encounters. He is a master of the speech-driven style of verse, which is based on overheard, interrupted, or invented conversations that are by turns humorous and deeply unsettling, intimate yet decorous. In the new poems section, Schwartz brings his broad experience across the arts (including his many years as a music critic and commentator) to bear, with poems that recall the feeling of both performing and apprehending a piece of music, say, or a painting, a film, or a poem; he explores the figures depicted within these artworks, their fears and desires, revealing whole unexplored, interior worlds, a universe in a pack of tarot cards. This collection, which gathers the very best of Schwartz's work over his long, distinguished career, amply displays the tenderness and delicacy of feeling that we've come to rely on in his poetry. 'Who's on First ' is a fitting capstone to a long life lived in the arts'.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'In exploring the long history of dogs in cities, Chris Pearson shows that the canine's inherently violent, filthy, and offputting aspects have significantly shaped contemporary western urban environments, as people sought to contain strays, rabies, and waste. And yet, the special bond between humans and dogs has also been a constitutive force. Investigating this history in Paris, London, and New York, Pearson details the complex interrelations among emotions, sentiment, and the ways we manifest our feelings through physical forms and social structures. The story of humans and dogs can illuminate the story of the rise and shape of urban modernity itself'.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'In An Education in Judgment, philosopher D. N. Rodowick makes his definitive case for a philosophical humanistic education as the development of a life guided by both self-reflection and interpersonal exchange. Such a life is an education in judgment, the moral capacity to draw conclusions alone and with others, and to let one's own judgments be answerable to the potentially contrasting judgments of others. Thinking, for Rodowick, is an art we practice with and learn from each other all the time. In taking this approach, Rodowick follows the lead of Hannah Arendt, who made judgment the cornerstone of her conception of community. Arendt was famously wary of mass culture, and so community (in an authentic sense) must be safeguarded from its many false guises. What is important for Rodowick, as for Arendt, is the cultivation of 'free relations,' in which we allow our judgments to be affected and transformed by those of others, creating 'an ever-widening fabric of intersubjective moral consideration.' This is a fragile fabric, to be sure, but one well worth pursuing, caring for, and preserving. This is an original work in which the author thinks with Arendt about the importance of the humanities and what 'the humanities' amounts to beyond the university'.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Any reader of the Chronicle of Higher Education can tell you that the humanities are in crisis. Seen as irrelevant for modern careers and hopelessly devoid of funding, humanistic disciplines seem at the mercy of modernizing forces driving the university towards academic pursuits that pull in grant money and direct students to lucrative careers. But as Paul Reitter and Chad Wellmon show, this crisis isn't new--in fact, it's as old as the humanities themselves. Today's humanities scholars experience and react to basic pressures in ways that are strikingly similar to the response of their nineteenth-century German counterparts. In German universities of the 1800s, as in those in the United States today, humanities scholars felt threatened by the very processes that allowed the modern humanities to flourish, such as institutional rationalization and the commodification of knowledge. But Reitter and Wellmon also emphasize the constructive side of crisis discourse. They claim that the self-understanding of the modern humanities didn't merely take shape in response to a perceived crisis; it also made crisis a core part of its project. The humanities came into their own by framing themselves as a unique resource for resolving crises of meaning and value that threatened other cultural or social goods. With this critical, historical perspective, Permanent Crisiscan take humanists beyond the usual scolding, exhorting, and handwringing into clearer, more effective thinking about the fate of the humanities. Furthering ideas from Max Weber and Friedrich Nietzsche to Andrew Delbanco and William Deresiewicz, Reitter and Wellmon dig into the notion of the humanities as a way to find meaning and coherence in the world'.
