The second edition, and the first to acknowledge authorship to clergyman James Chelsum. First published anonymously in 1776. ESTC No.: T77383. A theological response to Edward Gibbon"s account of the rise and spread of Christianity in the fifteenth and sixteenth chapters of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,in which Chelsum critiques Gibbon's sceptical portrayal of early Church history, and similar remarks to Joseph Priestley's rationalist views. His critique formed part of the controversy which prompted Gibbon"s own Vindication of 1779. James Chelsum (c.1740-1801) was an English clergyman, scholar and polemicist, educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Three very large, oversized, books. Bound in handsome, full leather. Brown leather with raised cords on the spines, with gold decorations and lettering. Gold borders and corner fillets on the boards. Page edges heavily gilt. Elaborate leather foldovers to endpapers, rolled with gold decorations. The date "1821" stamped on the spines in gold. An attractive set, and remarkable for such a heavy set that it is still bound. Some mild bumps to corners. Volume 1 has 462 pages + long addenda and engravings. Volume 2 has 555 pages. Volume 3 has 621 pages plus long supplement. Volume 3 has an interior hinge repair at the rear endpaper, where the original endpaper split at the gutter and allowed the case binding to come apart. The leather hinge is not damaged. Illustrated throughout with fine engravings, both on pages alone and within the text. Each volume has a small rectangle on the inside front cover where a bookplate was neatly removed. Each has a small rubberstamped name on the bottom of the inside front cover, "Harold Phelps Stokes." Stokes was the son of NY Bank baron Anson Stokes. He went to Yale and then worked for the Hoover administration before going to work for the NY Times for many many years. He grew up on the family mansion on Madison Ave, which is now part of the Morgan Library. This set was part of the family library, kept and preserved by Stokes.
