Originalbroschur. Zustand: Sehr gut. 256 S. Gebraucht, aber gut erhalten. - Inhalt: What Is at Stake? -- Conflicts and Their Causes: Acres of Desolation -- CASE STUDIES: Burundi and the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa: Strengthless Cures, in Vain -- The South Balkans: Landscape Painted with Blood -- Nigeria: The Mirror of Oil -- The Ferghana Valley: Festering Inner Wounds -- PREVENTING VIOLENT CONFLICTS - ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGIES: Prevention: Concept and Scope -- Warning: Risk Assessment and Monitoring -- Systemic Prevention -- Targeted Prevention -- Organizing for Prevention. - In this provocative book, the founding director of the Council on Foreign Relations' Center for Preventive Action analyzes the nature and causes of contemporary armed conflict. Using case studies developed from extensive fieldwork in the Balkans, Central Asia, and Africa, Barnett Rubin illustrates how global trade in arms, drugs, and other products can cause conflict or make it far more violent. The terrorist attacks of 2001 made it painfully clear that the blood of violent regional conflict can overflow the American doorstep. However, ethnic conflicts, failing states, and humanitarian disasters in the world's poorest regions can be averted or ameliorated with effective early attention, according to Rubin. He calls for flexible partnerships among states, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations to reduce the structural causes of violent conflict and to prevent their escalation. First edition; oblong folio (291 x 418 mm, 11½ x 16½ in); black-and-white photographs printed in gravure, epigraph by Walt Whitman, afterword by Leslie George Katz; green cloth-covered boards bound with three screws, titles stamped to spine and upper side in black, publisher's device in gold to spine, upper side ruled in gold, a fine copy still in the publisher's shrinkwrap; [176]pp. The American Monument was published to coincide with the United States Bicentennial. When looking through his contact sheets, Friedlander noticed that a large number of public statues, memorials, plaques and reliefs had made their way into his photographs; after that, he began seeking them out. While some monuments in these photographs have become tourist attractions, most are overlooked and often abandoned. Leslie George Katz, founder of Eakins Press, writes in his afterword that monuments are 'metaphors for human values, persistent values that survive despite notice or neglect.' Friedlander's photographs show the modern world encroaching. First edition, one of only 2000 copies, with 213 photogravure plates. Oblong folio, original blue-gray cloth. In fine condition. Signed by Lee Friedlander. "With more than 200 photographs scrupulously produced and bound ledger-style, The American Monument is a humorous, lyrical, and excessive expression of a country's obsession with immortalizing itself. Leslie Katz writes: "This photographer in these photographs affirms the residual order in the crazy scene. He understands and brings us human civilization, embattled but intact in the various wilds of American enterprise, whether downtown, in suburbia, or on the roof." âTwelve years in the making, The American Monument is almost maniacally inclusive, rounding up everything from Plymouth Rock to a plaque commemorating the Pony Express in Salt Lake City and treating them all with the same deliberate nonchalance. The doggedness of Friedlanderâs quest is at once astounding and hilarious⦠Friedlanderâs memorials, no matter how solidly anchored, seem adrift, lost in the landscape, unnoticed if not forgotten⦠Tidy arrangements of two, three and four pictures multiply obsessively as the bookâs momentum builds; towards the end, there are accumulations of six and nine photos to a page. The result is overwhelming, as it clearly was intended to be. History stalks the landscape at every turnâ (Roth 101,236). Open Book 310.

First edition. The complete portfolio containing nine hand-pulled photogravures, printed on Rives BFK paper by Jon Goodman from Evans's original negatives, lent by the Estate of Walker Evans, each with the publisher's debossed stamp. With an introduction, "Walker Evans: The Brooklyn Bridge," by publisher Leslie George Katz, and the dedicatory poem "To Brooklyn Bridge," by Hart Crane. Copy 39 of an edition of 100 numbered copies plus 15 proofs. Each print measures 9 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches (25.1 x 14.9 cm.). Unbound sheets in cloth box, with label, as issued. Fine. "In an age where the 'vintage print' has all but stopped the full realization of important, past photographic works, the Eakins Press Foundation has brought to fulfillment one of the earliest projects of America's most important photographer. The nine photographs of Walker Evans of the Brooklyn Bridge have been scrupulously reproduced in hand-gravure by the renowned printer Jon Goodman. With this portfolio, the quality of the final print has at last reached a level worthy of the grandeur of Evans's vision and the timeless symbol of the Brooklyn Bridge. Each of the nine photographs in this portfolio is an architectural detail reinforcing the integrity of the whole. They dwell with Crane's eloquence in the mind of the viewer to form a kind of prayer. Together, Crane's words and Evans' photographs form a relationship that joins the two mediums in a pure and distinctive metaphor of appreciation that is worthy of both." - excerpt from the essay by Leslie George Katz.
