This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition of work by Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from 8 May to 5 September 1994. The exhibition then toured to the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate Gallery, London. The exhibition focussed on a selection of 84 representative works by de Kooning, representing the finest accomplishments of his oeuvre over fifty years. The catalogue also includes essays by Richard Shiff and David Sylvester.

Of all the impressionist painters who sought ways to represent and express the modern world, only Degas was consistently attracted to the world of horses and jockeys. During Degas's youth horse racing had grown to become of the most popular French spectator sports and he was introduced to horses while holidaying in Normandy in 1861.
