This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition of work by the impressionist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) held at the National Gallery of Art, Washingtoton from 12 April to 12 July, 1998. Of all the impressionist painters who sought ways to represent and express the modern world, only Degas was consistently attracted to the world of horses and jockeys. During Degas's youth horse racing had grown to become of the most popular French spectator sports and he was introduced to horses while holidaying in Normandy in 1861. This book discusses in detail the importance of the horse in Degas' work. NB: A heavy book, will require extra shipping charges if to be sent outside UK.

The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Catalogue from the exhibiton held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., from October 12, 1991 to January 12 1992.; Columbus planned and carried out his "Enterprise of the Indies" during an age of discovery and creation - a period of astonishing cultural activity not only in Europe but throughout the world. Five hundred years later a remarkable exhibition and book celebrate this crucial turning point in civilization by examining the art and history f the principle cultures in Europe and the Mediterranean, eastern Asia, and the Americas. The book begins by looking at the Mediterranean world as the new seaborn empires were being formed, surveying the visual arts and principal intellectual and spiritual currents in major political centers from Portugal to Turkey to Africa. Next it takes the reader on Colombus' proposed route east to the fabled lands of Cathay, presenting essays about and illustrations of paintings, sculpture, calligraphy, and decorative art that document the venerable civilizations of the Far East. Finally, it surveys the great empires and chiefdoms of the Americas that the Europeans suddenly and unexpectedly encontered, fosusing on major works of Aztec sculpture, textiles from the Inka Empire, works in gold from Columbia and Costa Rica, and objects from the pre-Columbian cultures of North America.

1st edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. Physical description; xi, 148 p.: ill. (chiefly col.); 32 cm. Notes; Catalogue of an exhibition held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., July 4-Oct. 31, 2009. Includes bibliographical references and index. Contents; Director's foreword -- Acknowledgments -- Lenders to the exhibition -- Essays -- A sculpture of longing: Tullio Lombardo, nostalgia for antiquity, and modern Venetian sculpture / Alison Luchs -- Tullio Lombardo: sculptor and architecto / Matteo Ceriana -- The sculptor in his cultural milieu / Adriana Augusti -- Catalogue -- Venetian expressive busts: portraiture, narrative, or fantasy? / Sarah Blake McHam and Alison Luchs -- Sacred sculpture and Tullio's expression / Alison Luchs -- Antiquity in the study: the contribution of Antonio Lombardo / Alison Luchs -- Bibliography -- Index. Summary; The great Venetian sculptors of the High Renaissance, led by Tullio Lombardo (c. 1455--1532), explored a poetic and nostalgic approach to classical antiquity in their work. Their expression shares much with Mantegna, Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian in these painters' imaginative evocations of ancient history, mythology, philosophy, and poetry. Featuring a range of Tullio's work, including his sensuous and dramatic double-portrait reliefs, this book introduces the romantic qualities and beautiful craftsmanship of the sculptor and his closest followers, including his brother Antonio Lombardo, Simone Bianco, Antonio Minello, and Giammaria Mosca. Essays examine Tullio's innovations and the Venetian cultural setting where he developed them in dialogue with the northern Italian masters of Renaissance painting. Twelve works, carefully selected from this milieu, exemplify the creative approach and influence of Tullio and the Lombardo workshop. Subjects; Lombardo, Tullio - Exhibitions. Sculpture, Renaissance - Italy - Venice - Exhibitions. Sculpture; Renaissance art. Italy. ART / Sculpture & Installation. ART / Individual Artists / General. ART / History / Renaissance. ART / European. ART / Collections, Catalogs, Exhibitions / General. 1 Kg.

Summary; When photography appeared shortly before 1840, the metal-plate daguerreotype, invented in France, was first to achieve popularity. But the process simultaneously developed in England for capturing an image on a paper negative--from which many positives could be printed--provided the foundation on which photography would build for the next 150 years. This beautiful book presents more than 120 photographs printed from paper negatives, or calotypes, most never before published. The entire course of the paper negative's "golden age" is described, from its laborious invention by William Henry Fox Talbot to competition with French photographers and commercial practitioners. Aesthetically ambitious, these richly textured calotypes were created by photographers both eminent and virtually unknown. Also included is an invaluable biographical dictionary of more than 500 British calotypists. Subjects; Calotype - Great Britain - History - 19th century - Exhibitions. Photography - Great Britain - History - 19th century - Exhibitions. NEGATIVES - PHOTOGRAPHY. Photography, British - 19th century - 1840s-1860s. Dates covered: 1840-1860.
