"In 1903-1906 Roald Amundsen established himself as a sailor and explorer of the first order when he successfully navigated the Gjoa through the entire length of the Northwest Passage, a treacherous ice- bound route that winds between the current northern Canadain mainland and Canada's Arctic islands. The expedition was a landmark event in the history of Arctic exploration. This book tells the story of the Gjoa and her crew. It is fully illustrated with original photos from the expedition and contains several excerpts from Roald Amundsen's diary. The book includes a 30-page fully illustrated timeline of all the main efforts to find the Northwest Passage and a chapter on the mystery of the north magnetic pole." (from back cover).

The story of Salomon August Andree`s balloon expedition towards the North Pole in 1897. Supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and funded by people like King Oscar II and Alfred Nobel, the expedition was the subject of enormous interest. The first attempt to launch the balloon, The Eagle, in the summer of 1896 from Danes Island, on the west of the Svalbard Archipelago, failed due to strong winds. When Andrée next tried, on 11 July 1897, together with his companions engineer Knut Frænkel and photographer Nils Strindberg the balloon did set off and sailed for 65 hours. But already at the lift-off the gondola had lost two of the three sliding ropes that were supposed to drag on the ice and function as a kind of rudder. Within ten hours of lift-off, they were caught by powerful winds and rain was creating ice on the balloon. It is likely that Andrée realized before the flight ended that they would never come near the pole. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. Astrup and Peary had caused an international sensation with their 1300 mile trek across Northern Greenland. Astrup had helped pioneer the combination of skiing and dog sledging, and was infatuated with the life of the Inuit. He had impressed Peary and had established warm friendships with the other expedition members. On his arrival in Norway, he was widely celebrated in the media and elsewhere, and gave a number of lectures in southern Norway. After receiving international recognition for his explorations and his recently published book, and in the midst of planning new expeditions to the Polar Regions, he was found dead in the mountains of Hjerkinn, mid Norway. He was only 24 years old. Today, sadly, Astrup is little known outside the realm of Arctic historians. How and why did his disappearance from popular knowledge occur, and who was this shooting star in the polar world? This first book in English on Eivind Astrup tells the story of his short life in the Arctic. It contains many of Astrup's writings, his communications with Peary, excerpts from previously unpublished letters and reports, his Inuit dictionary, and more than 480 original photos, maps, and newspaper articles. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

Signed by the editor, Geir Klover. Presenting Roald Amundsen s personal diaries in English from the Gjøa expedition was a big moment for the Fram Museum, but also an important contribution to the dissemination of Norwegian and international polar history. Amundsen writes with great enthusiasm about the enormous efforts he and his crew are making in dealing with scientific research and Amundsen s own studies of the Inuit. After reading the diaries we know so much about the expedition, about life aboard Gjøa and among the Inuit. Amundsen is generous in his descriptions of his comrades and treats all contact with, and all the information from, the inuit with great respect. In addition, he emerges as an unprecedented planner of an expedition through the Northwest Passage. After four hundred years of attempts to solve the puzzle of the Passage, his expedition took place exactly as he presented in his plan to the Norwegian Geographical Society in 1901, more than 18 months before his departure. These volumes are far more than a diary from Gjøa s journey through the Northwest Passage. The books cover a large portion of Roald Amundsen s life from 1900 to 1907. From Amundsen s own hand, included are his unabridged personal diaries from his studies on the Earth s magnetism in Hamburg in 1900, the takeover of Gjøa in Tromsø and the following hunting and research expedition in the Arctic in 1901. Furthermore, his personal letters to his brother Leon and his correspondence with his mentor Fridtjof Nansen are included, as are letters, newspaper clippings, and other documents related to the expedition, the celebration of the homecoming in 1906, and Amundsen s lecture tours at home and abroad. A fantastic publication. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.
