In den Warenkorb4to (180 x 238 mm). Printed from wooden movable type on 14 ff. of finest pink, yellow and blue gampi paper, bound in three quires and sewn together. Original semi-stiff pale grey wrappers with white powder woodblock-printed floral patterns. Original printed title slip to upper cover. With two instances (on 6th and 8th leaf) of characters erased and reprinted individually. Stored in a blue cloth chitsu with two horn clasps. Exceptional, unique printing of a Noh play libretto featuring stunning calligraphy by Hon'ami Koetsu. - The 14th-century play Tamura tells the story of a travelling priest who meets a boy at the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The boy eventually vanishes and reappears as a grown man in full armour, telling the priest he is Sakanoue no Tamuramaru, who had established the temple after defeating an evil spirit with the aid of Kannon, the Deity of Mercy, who is worshipped at the temple. - Even though Tamura is not listed in the official Saga-bon account of publications, it shows clear patterns typically used by this publisher: it is printed on the same fine paper and the cover is decorated with exquisite white motifs made of gofun and ummo powders, traits commonly found in Saga-bon editions (cf. Chibbett, p. 21). - The admirable calligraphy, which intertwines the use of kanji and kana, is accompanied by clear tone indicators: pitch marks that illustrate whether the sung line rises, falls, or remains even. These are an invention of Hon'ami Koetsu's master, Kanze Kokusetsu (1566-1626). The roles of the play are also indicated in the upper margin, written in smaller characters. These notations transform the literary text into a practical and refined guide to Noh vocal performance. - Librettos of Noh plays published by Saga-bon are luxurious items, amongst the most remarkable books created in Japan. Their design was far in advance of anything produced in the West at the time. Issued in limited numbers, they were intended for an elite audience. - An outstanding and well-preserved example of a Saga-bon published Noh play, featuring charming decoration and exquisite calligraphy. - Covers worn and a bit stained. Ink impressions fainter in some places. Occasional light thumbstains to lower margin. - Red ownership stamp at the end of the text. Acquired from a French private collection. - Cf. D. Chibbett, The History of Japanese Printing and Book Illustration (Tokyo, 1977).…
