Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. vii, [1], 120 pages. Illustrations (tables and figures). Diagram. References. Author Index. Subject Index. This is one of the ERDA Critical Review series. Ink notation at top right of title page. Cover has some wear and soiling. The author was associated with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Auxier got his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, he holds tenure at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and he worked at the University of Texas where he was appointed chairman of the department of physics and engineering of the radiobiological laboratory. Dr. Auixer was involved with the Atomic Bomb Causality Commission to see the effects that radiation and distance have on people and things near the place a bomb was dropped. Immediately after the cessation of fighting in Japan in World War II, studies began which were aimed at learning as much as possible about radiation effects on the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. The most important factors were the immediate and long-term effects of the varying doses of radiation to the survivors. Although the medical studies commenced within months of the bombings, it was ten years before technology reached the stage at which it appeared possible to determine with any real reliability the effect the radiation doses had on these people. The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and subsequently the Energy Research and Development Administration supported medical and dosimetry studies of the survivors. In 1975 the United States and Japan joined as full partners to carry on the studies far into the future. The dosimetry portion of these studies is recorded in this monograph. In this review the author presents a mixture of historical highlights and scientific information. The objective is to give the reader some insight and understanding into the overall program and to identify the original publications for those seeking an in-depth analysis.

This report was prepared for the Division of Operational Safety. This bibliography has been prepared to assist in certain Atomic Energy Commission tritium effluent control studies and for the use of others who may have an interest in tritium handling, monitoring, and disposal practices within the AEC and private industry. The contents includes references from each of Volumes 21-26, a Corporate Author index, a Personal Author index, a Report Number index, and a Subject Index. References to 351 publications that have appeared in NSA Volume 21 (1967) through Volume 26 (1972) are contained in this bibliography. The References were retrieved from the NSA data base using the computerized RESPONSA search system and were formatted for publication with indexes by the generalized output program GENOUT. The NSA subject indexing is displayed under each citation to provide information on the contents of the document.

Wraps. Zustand: Good. iv, 52 pages. Cover has some wear and soiling. Ex-library with usual library markings. Also has designation Nuclear Explosions--Peaceful Applications (TID-4500). This includes an Abstract, Introduction, and Sections entitled General, Excavation, Underground Engineering, and Other Applications. These are followed by sections on USAEC Film Library Locations and Service Areas, Open Files: Projects Gasbuggy and Rulison, Author Index, Experiment Index, Foreign Literature Index, Report Number and Availability Index, and Report Collections in the United States. Among the projects were: Cabriolet, Palanquin, Sedan, Schooner, Gasbuggy, Rulison and Gnome. While not listed in the contents, the index has a number of references to Milrow and to the Transisthmian Canal. Project Plowshare was the overall United States program for the development of techniques to use nuclear explosives for peaceful construction purposes. 31 nuclear warheads were detonated in 27 separate tests. Successful demonstrations of non-combat uses for nuclear explosives include rock blasting, stimulation of tight gas, chemical element manufacture, probing the composition of the Earth's deep crust, creating reflection seismology Vibroseis data which has helped geologists and follow-on mining company prospecting. The project's uncharacteristically large and atmospherically vented Sedan nuclear test also led geologists to determine that Barringer crater was formed as a result of a meteor impact and not from a volcanic eruption. Negative impacts from Project Plowshare's tests generated significant public opposition, which eventually led to the program's termination in 1977. These consequences included fallout from radioactive material before underground testing was mandated by treaty. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Also contains an Introduction, an Index, and chapters on Electric Utility Economics, Electric Utility Cost Analysis, Nuclear-Plant Economics, Total Energy Production Costs, Technical-Economic Interrelations, Power-Supply Economics, Thermal-Transport Systems and Core Design; Nuclear-Analysis Methods; Safety and Related Design Requirements; Fuel-System Analysis; Cost-Analysis Methods and Fuel Management; Core Management; Fuel Economy; Fuel-Design Parameters; Fast Reactors; Thorium Fuel Systems; Design Considerations; and Some Optimization Approaches. The history of the School of Nuclear Engineering originates with Alexander Sesonske, who arrived at Purdue University from Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in September 1954 as an associate professor of Chemical Engineering. He brought nuclear engineering into an interdisciplinary graduate program open to students from various engineering disciplines. In 1955, the first edition of Nuclear Reactor Engineering by Samuel Glasstone and Alexander Sesonske was published. In 1966 Professor Sesonske became Acting Head for the School of Nuclear Engineering until 1973. This book evolved from material used as background in several design-oriented courses for students who have had an introduction to nuclear engineering. A primary objective is to develop an additional perspective of engineering areas important to reactor design which interplay with one another. Emphasis is given to such areas as engineering economics, thermal-hydraulics, safety analysis, and fuel systems.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. First Edition. 1047 pages (complete). Volume 2 only. A benign, somewhat middle-aged copy. The dustjacket is bright. It does have wear and some scuffing about. It is comfortably secure. The cloth covered boards are pastoral in their placidity. They have some knocks to the corners and edges. Otherwise they are mild-mannered and healthy. Within, the guttering along the Preface page is cracked. The general security of the book is unaffected. The generosity of the book was not influenced by the Cold War. It is very detailed, clear, diligent. The pages are clean, confident, utilitarian. fk.
