xii, 300pp. 12mo. xii, 300pp. 12mo. 1790 "FALSE" IMPRINT OF "FRIENDSHIP IN DEATH" BY MRS. ROWE. Early owner's ink name on front pastedown: "Mrs. Betsey Bottom" and early pencil name of "Bascom" family member. Betsey Bottom (1786-1863), was born in Orwell, Vermont, she was married, in 1809, to Josiah Bascom (of Newport, N.H.). Josiah was a descendant of Thomas Bascom, who was born in England, in 1602, and settled in Northampton, Massachusetts (where he died in 1682). An uncommon printing; OCLC locates only two holdings of this 1790 "London" imprint, noting that, "The imprint is false; possibly printed at York?" [with holdings only at Yale and Lehigh]. Elizabeth Rowe [nee Elizabeth Singer](1674-1737), English poet and novelist, was born in Somerset. At her request, her letters and manuscripts were edited, and posthumously published, by noted hymnographer, Isaac Watts. OCLC notes: "The imprint is false; possibly printed at York?"; ESTC 134496; originally published in 1728, 'Friendship in Death' reached 18 editions by 1800 Early calf, leather is quite dried and rubbed, spine and extremities worn, spine label dull (with gilt title barely legible), lacking front and rear flyleaves, title page soiled at fore-edge, text is quite foxed with early, uneven soil marks to some pages, one leaf has chip at lower fore-corner (with slight loss to few letters of one printed word), else a good, sound copy.
