Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A visual history of Norfolk Southern's evolution from monochrome engines to colorful heritage locomotives and beyond. The Norfolk Southern Railway, formed by the merger of the Norfolk & Western and Southern Railways in 1982, has been known since its inception for the black and white/monochrome livery applied to its locomotives. While both of its predecessors once made use of more colorful hues on their motive power, by the 1970s both roads had turned to black paint, although the Southern also included a horizontal area of off-white in what was termed the 'Tuxedo' paint scheme. In 2012, the Norfolk Southern, led by its CEO Charles W. 'Wick' Moorman, took to heart the suggestion of a young railroad enthusiast and launched the program that created 20 'Heritage' units, which utilized paint schemes from railroads that had formed the two predecessor roads. Some of these were, indeed, colorful. In subsequent years, this group of locomotives was joined by others that have liveries commemorating a variety of entities, which added to the colorful motive power fleet. In addition, it has also become increasingly common for locomotives from other railroads to operate on the NS and vice versa, adding doses of additional color to what otherwise would be rather somber-looking locomotive servicing facilities.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A haunting exploration of the Battle of Gettysburg and the restless spirits of young soldiers left behind on its blood-soaked fields.Fifty thousand soldiers died at Gettysburg, the largest and most horrific battle of the Civil War. And they can be heard, calling out in the silvery moonlight of Devil's Den, crying out in pain and terror at Kuhn's Brickyard, and whispering ghostly messages to frightened travelers at historic taverns. There are seminal events that defy description, some so brutally violent and tragic that they infuse the very land with the trauma of their experience. The Battle of Gettysburg is one such milestone, a struggle for the soul of young America and a turning point in history.Something has been left behind, the ghostly spirits of forgotten warriors, condemned to battle for eternity.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A richly illustrated history tracing the rise and fall of streetcars in Northeast Portland from 1888 to 1948.The story of the role played by streetcars in the development of Northeast Portland, Oregon begins in 1888, when rails were laid northward through virgin timber and bottomland towards the Columbia River. Tracks soon also extended eastward along a prehistoric dirt road leading toward the Columbia Slough. Many twists and turns were encountered before the last steel wheel turned in 1948.This tale of technological change, entrepreneurship, and murder is illustrated with carefully selected archival photographs, many never published. The first horse-drawn streetcars are seen plodding along Grand Avenue in 1888. The steam 'dummies' that took over are remembered in an 1893 image showing a fatal derailment. Amazing scenes depict narrow-gauge interurbans hurtling across high trestles. A unique subject is The Dragon, the system's only articulated streetcar. Beauty is on display in views of Portland's last new cars, the streamlined Broadways of 1932.Each chapter focuses on a classic city line that served Northeast Portland and begins with a map created for the book. A final section brings things up to date following the introduction of light rail here in 2001.…
