Small octavo, original cloth with gilt title to the front panel, patterned endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs C.E. Staples in kind recoll…ections of days in Japan Joshua Slocum." In very good condition. Exceptionally rare signed and inscribed. After being stranded in Southern Brazil with his second wife and two eldest sons following the wreck of the unlucky Aquidneck, Slocum began work on a new boat that could sail them home. He used local materials, salvaged materials from the Aquidneck and worked with local workers. The boat was launched on May 13, 1888, the very day slavery was abolished in Brazil, and therefore the ship was given the Portuguese name Liberdade. It was an unusual 35-foot (11 m) junk-rigged design which he described as "half Cape Ann dory and half Japanese sampan". He and his family began their voyage back to the United States, his son Victor (15) being the mate. After fifty-five days at sea and 5510 miles, the Slocums reached Cape Roman, South Carolina and continued inland to Washington D.C. for winter and finally reaching Boston via New York in 1889. This was the last time Henrietta sailed with the family. In 1890, Slocum published the accounts of these adventures in Voyage of the Liberdade.

The recipient, Don Carlos Seitz, was a newspaper manager best known for his long tenure as business manager of Joseph Pulitzer's New York World, a position he held from 1898 to 1923 during the paper's most prosperous era. Born in Portage, Ohio, he began his career on the Brooklyn Eagle before joining the World, rising through its advertising department to become business manager, and he was also a prolific author whose works included a notable biography of Pulitzer as well as books on Horace Greeley, pirates, and famous American duels. In very good condition with repairs to pages 15-18. Exceptionally rare signed and inscribed. A very good fine set with the fine grey cloth slipcase. Comprising the… 92 engraved plates, each loose in individual folding wrappers as issued. A collection of the suite of illustrations to Carroll's classic works, first published in 1866 [1865] and 1872 respectively, printed here for the first - and only - time from the original engraved boxwood blocks. These were engraved from the original drawings by Sir John Tenniel by the Dalziel brothers, 'the leading commercial wood engravers of the Victorian age. Although the engravers advised Carroll that the blocks should be used for printing, no doubt to ensure a more faithful reproduction of the image. this was not done. Instead, they were kept as "masters" from which electrotype copies were made, and were only moved from safe keeping for fresh electros to be prepare. No general or limited edition has ever been printed from them' (the prospectus). In 1985 it was discovered that all except one of the original wood engravings (that of 'Alice and the Dodo', for which there is an electrotype reproduction here) had survived. This lavish production is the upshot, with only 250 sets, 'of which 25 will be specials', being published; this is number 102 (the companion volume is also limited thus, but unnumbered). 'Each print measures 235 × 175 mm, and has a deckle edge at the foot. The paper is. in a shade specially made to match that used in the original edition of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." There are 92 prints in total, 42 for "Wonderland," and 50 for "Looking-Glass"'. Each print is loosely inserted in a slip mount. The title of the book and a brief relevant quotation is printed on the front of each mount'.
