Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The powerful thesis of this book is that in order to achieve full selfhood we must all repeatedly and endlessly kill the phantasmatic image of ourselves instilled in us by our parents. We must all combat what the author calls 'primary narcissism,' a projection of the child our parents wanted. This idea-that each of us carries as a burden an unconscious secret of our parents, a hidden desire that we are made to live out but that we must kill in order to 'be born'-touches on some of the fundamental issues of psychoanalytic theory. Around it, the author builds an intricate analysis of the relation between primary narcissism and the death drive.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Scarcely any theoretical discourse has had greater impact on literary and cultural studies than psychoanalysis, and yet hardly any theoretical discourse is more widely misunderstood and abused. In Psychoanalyzing, Serge Leclaire offers a thorough and lucid exposition of the psychoanalysis that has emerged from the French 'return to Freud,' unfolding and elaborating the often enigmatic pronouncements of Jacques Lacan and patiently working through the central tenets of the 'Ecole freudienne.' As a concise but nuanced introduction to the subject, Psychoanalyzing will prove indispensable to anyone interested in psychoanalysis, especially those curious about its Lacanian reconceptualization and the linguistic theory of the unconscious and its effects.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This innovative work is the first to approach the awakening of China as a historical problem in its own right, and to locate this problem within the broader history of the rise of modern China. It analyzes the link between the awakening of China as a historical narrative and the awakening of the Chinese people as a political technique for building a sovereign and independent state. In sum, it asks what we mean when we say that China 'woke up' in this century.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Written by one of the world's leading paleographers, this book poses two fundamental questions: When did human beings begin-and why have they continued-to decide that a certain number of their dead had a right to a 'written death' What differences have existed in the practice of writing death from age to age and culture to culture Drawing principally on testimonials intended for public display, such as monuments, tombstones, and grave markings, as well as on scrolls, books, manuscripts, newspapers, and posters, the author reconstructs the ways Western cultures have used writing to commemorate the dead, from the tombs of ancient Egypt to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The thesis of this book is that repetition is central to Tolstoy's art. The author argues that Tolstoy uses this device-or rather, complex of devices-to represent and examine the processes by which people structure and give meaning to their experience. Repetition is shown to be essential to his style, to his understanding of characters' psychology, to the structure of his work, and to his interaction with readers. In short, it defines much of what is 'Tolstoyan' about Tolstoy.

This idea--that each of us carries as a burden an unconscious secret of our parents, a hidden desire that we are made to live out but that we must kill in order to 'be born'--touches on some of the fundamental issues of psychoanalytic theory. Around it, the author builds an intricate analysis of the relation between primary narcissism and the death drive. Each of the book's five chapters begins with one or more case studies drawn from the author's clinical experience as a psychoanalyst. In these studies he links his central concern--the image of the child created by the unconscious desire of the parents--to other issues, such as the question of love, the concept of the subject, and the death drive. In the penultimate chapter, on transference, the author challenges the commonplace understanding of the analyst's impassivity. What does such impassivity imply, especially in the context of a 'transferential love' between a female patient and a male analyst In replying to this question, the author forcefully reassesses the relation of psychoanalysis to femininity, to the question 'What does a woman want 'Serge Leclaire's overarching thesis leads to a provocative rereading of the Oedipal configuration. Leclaire suggests that he is inhabited, pursued, haunted, and debilitated by the child who should have died in order that Oedipus might have been born into life.

As a concise but nuanced introduction to the subject, Psychoanalyzing will prove indispensable to anyone interested in psychoanalysis, especially those curious about its Lacanian reconceptualization and the linguistic theory of the unconscious and its effects.Leclaire's study is particularly valuable for the way its author links theoretical issues to psychoanalytic practice. The opening chapter--on listening--highlights the necessity, and the impossibility, of the 'floating attention' required from the analyst, while preparing the reader for the following chapters, which deal with such topics as unconscious desire, how to speak of the body, and the intrication of the object and the 'letter' (i.e. the signifier, the 'material support that concrete discourse borrows from language'). The final chapter--on transference--shows how the analytical dialogue differs from other dialogues.Despite the intricacy of its subject matter, the book takes very little for granted. It does not simplify the issues it presents, but does not assume a reader familiar with the concepts of psychoanalysis, let alone a reader acquainted with its French inflection. Each basic concept and term is carefully explained, so that the reader knows the meaning of 'transference' or 'primal scene' before proceeding to more advanced elements of psychoanalysis. Leclaire's text is not intended merely to be 'user friendly'; its purpose is to clarify and advance, rather than to impress or convert.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At the time the Soviet Union broke apart in the late 1980's, it possessed the largest scientific community in the world. The rapid development, in just a few decades, of such an immense scientific establishment--in a social and economic environment strikingly different from the West--presents an unusual opportunity for the world's leading authority on Soviet science to examine how the Russian experience sheds light on the status and character of science and technology throughout the world. The book is organized around five questions, each given its own chapter: 'Is Science a Social Construction ' 'Are Science and Technology Westernizing Influences ' ' How Robust Is Science Under Stress ' ' How Willing Are Scientists to Reform Their Own Institutions ' and 'Who Should Control Technology 'The author believes that the Russian example reveals in detail both the strengths and the weaknesses of social constructivism. Though many areas of Russian science show the unmistakable influence of social factors, the deviation of the Soviet Union from standard genetics for many years, followed by its eventual restoration, indicates the weakness of social constructivism and illustrates the relationship of science to reality. He further maintains that although science in Russia has been terribly abused, it nonetheless remains strong; it has proven to be much more resilient than most previous observers believed, and, furthermore, is not nearly as directly dependent on political freedom for its vitality as Western analysts maintained. In the final section, the author makes two strong claims. The first comes from an examination of the social constructivist thesis that science is formed by social influences. His conclusion is that Russian science has indeed been influenced in that country in distinct ways, but not always in a fashion that will please radical social constructivists. The second strong claim is that contrary to the view of many Western scholars that science can flourish only in conditions of nurturing freedom, science turns out to be remarkably robust, able to flourish in adverse conditions.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This innovative work explores the historical consciousness of a people caught between two life-worlds. The Duna of Papua New Guinea have developed their own views of historical change, expressed in a fusion of two elements: indigenous ideas of cosmological cycles, and introduced Christian notions of world's end. The book explores how the formation of historical consciousness is constituted differently for men and women. A central focus is the fluid social environment of the Duna, where new contests about gendered personhood and agency emerge in the context of changing power relationships and arenas of cooperation between the sexes. The author reveals the links between gender and history and uses a gendered analysis as a lens of historical perception for viewing a wide range of topics. In the process, gender becomes 'an idiom of thinking' that permeates all social domains, including kinship, marriage, and residence. The theme of consumption emerges forcefully throughout the book, engaging such crucial issues as gender and inequality, constructions of personhood, and the influence of historical change on social life. The sphere of consumption is also where cultural projections and social practice meet in the powerful domain of notions about female witchcraft, since female agency and consumption wishes form the basis for male fear of witches. The author explains how, in circumstances of historical indeterminacy, there has been a shift in the semantic platforms on which Duna witchcraft notions are grounded, a shift that has led to a process of symbolic reconfiguration. The book contributes to emerging trends in anthropological research in three ways. Ethnographically, it presents a transformed picture of people whose lives were examined by earlier, male ethnographers in terms of Marxist or sociobiological models. Analytically, it uses new perspectives to provide a more interpretive and nuanced account of gender relations. Theoretically, it explores the potential value of the theme of historical consciousness for an anthropology concerned with questions of change and with people's perceptions about their past and their future.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book reveals how South Korea was transformed from one of the poorest and most agrarian countries in the world in the 1950's to one of the richest and most industrialized states by the late 1980's. The author argues that South Korea's economic, cultural, and political development was the product of a unique set of historical circumstances that cannot be replicated elsewhere, and that only by ignoring the costs and negative consequences of development can South Korea's transformation be described as an unqualified success.
