In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Peter Szondi's Celan Studies marked the beginning of critical work on Paul Celan, the most important German poet of the second half of the twentieth century. The book's three studies each concentrate on a different Celan poem. 'The Poetry of Constancy: Paul Celan's Translation of Shakespeare's Sonnet 105' investigates a historical turn from a poetry that claims to present its object to a poetry that only promises to do so. 'Reading 'Engführung'' follows the movement of poetic language into territory undisclosed to epistemic reason. 'Eden' addresses 'Du liegst,' a poem on the murder of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht; Szondi actually was with Celan when the poem was written. It analyzes the relation between the historical facts to which a poem refers and its composition. The book contains, as appendixes, Szondi's notes for three more projected studies of Celan poems, left unwritten at the time of his death in 1971.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Memory of historical trauma has a unique power to generate works of art. This book analyzes the relation of public memory to history, forgetting, and selective memory in Berlin, Buenos Aires, and New York--three late-twentieth-century cities that have confronted major social or political traumas. Berlin experienced the fall of the Berlin Wall and the city's reemergence as the German capital; Buenos Aires lived through the dictatorships of the 1970s and 1980s and their legacy of state terror and disappearances; and New York City faces a set of public memory issues concerning the symbolic value of Times Square as threatened public space and the daunting task of commemorating and rebuilding after the attack on the World Trade Center. >.

For those who would discover Jeffers, the intense beauty of his poems of the California coast; the reach of his meditations on history, science, and God; and the lyricism of his personal poems, this is the place to start--and a place to return again and again.' --Tim Hunt, Washington State University> --Robert Hass, University of California, Berkeley.

Through a series of deft readings, Redfield shows us how the aesthetic is always entangled in lines of forces beyond art proper. He charts expertly how this works in key texts of the Romantic period, all the while demonstrating powerfully that what we call Romanticism is by no means simply a thing of the past.'--Ian Balfour, York University'Redfield's indispensible book casts new and important light on what impedes modernity in the region of the aesthetic, and, by its brilliant example, demonstrates what comes of responding to that occlusion with an ethics of reading.'--Studies in Romanticism.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) is not only the greatest poet that the American West has produced but also a major poet of the twentieth century in the tradition of American prophetic poetry. This anthology serves as an introduction to Jeffers's work for the general reader and for students in courses on American poetry. Jeffers composed each volume of his verse around one or two long narrative or dramatic poems. The Wild God of the World follows this practice: in it, Cawdor, one of Jeffers's most powerful narratives, is surrounded by a representative selection of shorter poems. At the end of the book, the editor has provided revealing statements about Jeffers's poetry and poetics, and about his philosophy of nature and human nature.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book suggests that modern cultural and critical institutions have persistently associated questions of aesthetics and politics with literature, theory, technics, and Romanticism. Its first section examines aesthetic nationalism and the figure of the body, focusing on writings by Benedict Anderson, J. G. Fichte, and Matthew Arnold, and arguing that uneasy acts of aestheticization (of media technology) and abjection (of the maternal body) undergird the production of the national body as 'imagined community.' Subsequent chapters on Paul de Man, Friedrich Schlegel, and Percy Shelley explore the career of the gendered body in the aesthetic tradition and the relationship among aesthetics, technics, politics, and figurative language. The author accounts for the hysteria that has characterized media representations of theory, explains why and how Romanticism has remained a locus of extravagant political hopes and anxieties, and, in a sequence of close readings, uncovers the 'anaesthetic' condition of possibility of the politics of aesthetics.
