George Armstrong Custer is famous for his fatal defeat at Little Big Horn in 1876 but Custer's baptism of fire came during the Civil War. In 1861, he graduated (last in his class) from West Point; only a month later, he saw action at the First Battle of Bull Run and was in active service through Appomattox, where he witnessed the surrender. But Custer's true prominence began at Gettysburg in1863. On the eve of the battle, he was promoted to brigadier general and given his first direct field command, that of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade (the "Wolverines"). This work details the action of July 3rd; after two hours of battle during which his cavalrymen were reduced to hand-to-hand infantry-style fighting, Custer then led the charge of one of his regiments (shouting the famous "Come on, you Wolverines!") Around three in the afternoon Confederate commander J.E.B. Stuart mounted a final charge, mowing down Union cavalry--until it met up with Custer's Wolverines. They stood firm, with Custer wielding his sword at the front, and broke the Confederates last attack.
