Hand colored broadside, 31 1/2 x 23 in. Bold title at the head of the image. A large wheel with a vignette of the U.S. Capitol building as the hub, divided into 14 pie-shaped sections printing historical, descriptive and statistical details for the 14 southern states represented (Virginia, North & South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, as well as Maryland and Delaware). The text for each concludes with their population statistics as of 1840 or 1845, and enumerating the number of slaves in each. Two portrait vignettes, one of Daniel Boone, the other of Patrick Henry appear in the upper third of the broadside on either side of an American eagle holding the link of a chain in its mouth, the chain used as a border to surround the wheel. Small oval images of Justice and Liberty, plus other images of the Pulaski Monument in Savannah, and the Ruins of Jamestown, The Hermitage, Mount Vernon, Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, Natural Bridge in Virginia, and a river scene in New Orleans are also present. At the bases of the two columns, each with an eagle perched on top, which flank either side of the broadside are scenes of slaves at work in the fields. Some chipping to edges, a few short tears at margins and some rumpling, but overall a striking image. No listings on OCLC. Not listed in the AAS Online Catalogue. Library of Congress lists an uncolored issue in their Graphic Arts collection.

Black-and-white lithographed view of Lookout Mountain, 12 ½ x 16 inches, the mountain rising steeply in the background, a locomotive of the Nashville & Chattanooga Rail Road pulling carloads full of soldiers away thought clear-cut fields, a :Field Hospital" and the "Encampment Pioneer Brigade," between. Alfred Edward Mathews (1831-1874), a native of England, "became a noted artist of the Civil War for the Union army" (AskArt), but is best known now for his western work, including "Pencil Sketches of Colorado," "Pencil Sketches of Montana," and "Gems of Rocky Mountain Scenery." This print apparently not recorded on OCLC (which does locate several other Mathews Civil War views); Newberry holds a color version of this print. Some storage soiling, a few chips and repairs in margins (not affecting text or image), lower margin faded, but legible. A good copy of a rare Civil War view by an important artist.
