Chapter 2 gives a reasonably thorough account of all finite subgroups of the orthogonal groups in two and three dimensions. The presentation is somewhat less formal than in succeeding chapters. For instance, the existence of the icosahedron is accepted as an empirical fact, and no formal proof of existence is included. Throughout most of Chapter 2 we do not distinguish between groups that are 'geo metrically indistinguishable,' that is, conjugate in the orthogonal group. Very little of the material in Chapter 2 is actually required for the sub sequent chapters, but it serves two important purposes: It aids in the development of geometrical insight, and it serves as a source of illustrative examples. There is a discussion offundamental regions in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 provides a correspondence between fundamental reflections and funda mental regions via a discussion of root systems. The actual classification and construction of finite reflection groups takes place in Chapter 5. where we have in part followed the methods of E. Witt and B. L. van der Waerden. Generators and relations for finite reflection groups are discussed in Chapter 6. There are historical remarks and suggestions for further reading in a Post lude.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 156 pp. Englisch.

Neuware - During the course of editing 'Supportive Care in Cancer Therapy' (Martin us Nijhoff Publishers, 1983), it become apparent that several topics would have to await a second volume. Furthermore, development of new informa tion and evolution of ideas continues. This volume continues the intent of the first to present reviews of issues relating to supportive care, and to identify areas where further definition and further research is needed. The physician reading this volume will find the contents though-provok ing. In addition to reviews authored by physicians, there are chapters authored by non-physicians, who present a different perspective and a dif ferent style of writing. Reverend Bigler writes from his long experience as a chaplain for cancer patients, and tries to identify the changes that take place in the personality of the chaplain who works with dying patients. Ms. Kil lion and Ms. Powell try to describe what an Oncology Nurse is, rather than what one does. Attorneys Reese and Price present a very practical summa tion of issues which face the cancer patient, and their chapter could easily be copied and offered to one's patients; furthermore, this chapter gives direc tion to the physician who is frequently called upon for advice regarding issues which lie entirely outside his/her formal training. Excellent reviews on more' medical' subjects are here. 'Cancer in the Elderly' should provoke oncologists to re-examine their approach to the geriatric patient.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Where do you begin to look for a recent, authoritative article on the diag nosis or management of a particular malignancy The few general oncology textbooks are generally out of date. Single papers in specialized journals are informative but seldom comprehensive; these are more often preliminary reports on a very limited number of patients. Certain general journals fre quently publish good in-depth reviews of cancer topics, and published sym posium lectures are often the best overviews available. Unfortunately, these reviews and supplements appear sporadically, and the reader can never be sure when a topic of special interest will be covered. Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes which aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up to date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion. First, by di viding the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung cancer, genitourinary cancer, pediatric oncology, etc. Second, by asking eminent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The use of coal is required to help satisfy the world's energy needs. Yet coal is a difficult fossil fuel to consume efficiently and cleanly. We believe that its clean and efficient use can be increased through improved technology based on a thorough understanding of fundamental physical and chemical processes that occur during consumption. The principal objective of this book is to provide a current summary of this technology. The past technology for describing and analyzing coal furnaces and combus tors has relied largely on empirical inputs for the complex flow and chemical reactions that occur while more formally treating the heat-transfer effects. GrOWing concern over control of combustion-generated air pollutants revealed a lack of understanding of the relevant fundamental physical and chemical mechanisms. Recent technical advances in computer speed and storage capacity, and in numerical prediction of recirculating turbulent flows, two-phase flows, and flows with chemical reaction have opened new opportunities for describing and modeling such complex combustion systems in greater detail. We believe that most of the requisite component models to permit a more fundamental description of coal combustion processes are available. At the same time there is worldwide interest in the use of coal, and progress in modeling of coal reaction processes has been steady.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 464 pp. Englisch.
