Crick had a specific project in mind when they offered Sidney Altman a position in their group in 1969 to conduct postdoctoral research at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge, England. At the time, an intense international competition was on- ing in as many as a dozen labs to determine the three-dimensional structure of tRNA. At the LMB, Aaron Klug was attacking the structure by crystallographic analysis with Brian F. C. Clark providing large amounts of purified phenylalanine tRNA. (Eventually, Aaron announced his empirically determined 3-D structure of yeast phenylalanine tRNA, a structure that is generally common to tRNAs, due in part to several conserved, novel three-way nucleotide interactions. ) Concurrently, Michael Levitt, a Ph. D. student of Francis, was visually scrutinizing the cloverleaf secondary structure of the 14 tRNA sequences known at the time. Levitt was searching for nucleotide covariation in different parts of the molecules that were conserved in the 14 sequences known at the time. He identified a possible covariation of an apparent Watson-Crick pairing type between the residues at position 15 from the 5¿ end of the tRNA and residue 48. Despite improvements in treatment, the survival of patients with SCCOC has not significantly improved over the past several decades. Most frequently, treatment failure takes the form of local and regional recurrences, but as disease control in these areas improves, SCCOC treatment failures more commonly occur as distant metastasis. The presence of cervical lymph node metastasis is the most reliable adverse prognostic factor in patients with SCCOC, and extracapsular spread (ECS) of cervical lymph nodes metastasis is a particularly reliable predictor of regional and distant recurrence and death from disease. Decisions regarding elective and therapeutic management of cervical lymph node metastases are made mainly on clinical grounds as we cannot always predict cervical lymph node metastasis from the size and extent of invasion of the primary tumors. Therefore the treatment of the neck disease in the management of SCCOC remains controversial. The promise of using biomarker-based treatment decisions has yet to be fully realized due to our poor understanding of the mechanisms of regional and distant metastases of SCCOC. Between 1961 and 1966 my colleagues and I deciphered the genetic code in Escherichia coli and showed that the genetic code is the same in E. coli, Xenopus laevis, and guinea pig tissues. These results showed that the code has been c- served during evolution and strongly suggested that the code appeared very early during biological evolution, that all forms of life on earth descended from a c- mon ancestor, and thus that all forms of life on this planet are related to one another. The problem of biological time was solved by encoding information in DNA and retrieving the information for each new generation, for it is easier to make a new organism than it is to repair an aging, malfunctioning one. Subsequently, small modi cations of the standard genetic code were found in certain organisms and in mitochondria. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed.
