However, to become a true learning enterprise, organizations cannot stop at instilling this yearning for knowledge into their collaborators. They must also capture and formalize the common know-how of the organization, as well as provide time and infrastructure to allow learning moments to happen. The aim of the Gaming Workgroup within IFIP 5.7 on Integrated Production Management Systems and the European Group of University Teachers for Industrial Management EHTB is to develop tools and formalisms to support experimental learning in these organizations. It has been proven that modelling the know-how, using visual environments such as multimedia and graphic simulations, is a first step. This in turn allows for the development of games, i.e. challenging settings that foster group interaction and problem solving. Games in Operations Management provides an excellent overview of the different game formats that have been developed and tested in past years, and includes games in a manufacturing environment, games in a services environment, and games for teaching organizational values. The book comprises the selected, revised proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Games in Production Management: Experimental Learning in Industrial Management, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in November, 1998, in Ghent, Belgium. The book will be of particular interest to organizational trainers, providing a good overview of state-of-the-art game and training formats as well as hints and advice on how to organize interactive training sessions. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

At the start of my graduate studies in the early 1950s, I Grenander's (1950) thesis, and was much attracted to the came across entire subject considered there. I then began preparing for the neces sary mathematics to appreciate and possibly make some contributions to the area. Thus after a decade of learning and some publications on the way, I wanted to write a modest monograph complementing Grenander's fundamental memoir. So I took a sabbatical leave from my teaching position at the Carnegie-Mellon University, encouraged by an Air Force Grant for the purpose, and followed by a couple of years more learning opportunity at the Institute for Advanced Study to complete the project. As I progressed, the plan grew larger needing a substantial background material which was made into an independent initial volume in (1979). In its preface I said: 'My intension was to present the following material as the first part of a book treating the In ference Theory of stochastic processes, but the latter account has now receded to a distant future,' namely for two more decades! Meanwhile, a much enlarged second edition of that early work has appeared (1995), and now I am able to present the main part of the original plan.

In discrete (or combinatorial) optimization many approaches have been developed recently that link the discrete universe to the continuous universe through geomet ric, analytic, and algebraic techniques. Such techniques include global optimization formulations, semidefinite programming, and spectral theory. As a result new ap proximate algorithms have been discovered and many new computational approaches have been developed. Similarly, for many continuous nonconvex optimization prob lems, new approximate algorithms have been developed based on semidefinite pro gramming and new randomization techniques. On the other hand, computational complexity, originating from the interactions between computer science and numeri cal optimization, is one of the major theories that have revolutionized the approach to solving optimization problems and to analyzing their intrinsic difficulty. The main focus of complexity is the study of whether existing algorithms are efficient for the solution of problems, and which problems are likely to be tractable. The quest for developing efficient algorithms leads also to elegant general approaches for solving optimization problems, and reveals surprising connections among problems and their solutions. A conference on Approximation and Complexity in Numerical Optimization: Con tinuous and Discrete Problems was held during February 28 to March 2, 1999 at the Center for Applied Optimization of the University of Florida.
