Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - JR is a language for concurrent programming. It is an imperative language that provides explicit mechanisms for concurrency, communication, and s- chronization. JR is an extension of the Java programming language with - ditional concurrency mechanisms based on those in the SR (Synchronizing Resources) programming language. It is suitable for writing programs for both shared- and distributed-memory applications and machines; it is, of course, also suitable for writing sequential programs. JR can be used in applications such as parallel computation, distributed systems, simulation, and many others. JR supports many 'features' useful for concurrent programming. However, our goals have always been keeping the language simple and easy to learn and use. We have achieved these goals by integrating common notions, both sequ- tial and concurrent, into a few powerful mechanisms. We have implemented these mechanisms as part of a complete language to determine their feasibility and cost, to gain hands-on experience, and to provide a tool that can be used for research and teaching. The introduction to Chapter 1 expands on how JR has realized our design goals.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This work derives from a conference discussing the history of computing in education. This conference is the first of hopefully a series of conferences that will take place within the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and hence, we describe it as the First Conference on the History of Computing in Education (HCE1). These proceedings represent a collection of works presented at the HCE1 Conference held in association with the IFIP 2004 World Computer Congress held in Toulouse, France. Contributions to this volume range from a wide variety of educational perspectives and represent activities from four continents. The HCE1 conference represents a joint effort of the IFIP Working Group 9.7 on the History of Computing and the IFIP Technical Committee 3 on Education. The HCE1 Conference brings to light a broad spectrum of issues and spans fourcontinents. It illustrates topics in computing education as they occurred in the early days of computing whose ramifications or overtones remain with us today. Indeed, many of the early challenges remain part of our educational tapestry; most likely, many will evolve into future challenges. Therefore, this work provides additional value to the reader as it will reflect in part the future development of computing in education to stimulate new ideas and models in educational development.

Neuware - E-government and Public Sector Process Rebuilding: Dilettantes, Wheelbarrows, and Diamonds provides an input to rebuild and improve the processes in which the public sector perform activities and interact with the citizens, companies, and the formal elected decision-makers. Through eleven chapters, the book emphasizes information systems (IS) as the vehicle for redirecting the public sector towards its key customers. The book stresses serious capability challenges inhibiting the digital transformation using activity and customer centric applications. The dilettantes in the public sector are in need of upgrading, rethinking, and refocusing their use of IS. There is a need to revisit the extensive use of digital wheelbarrows to transmit data, and complement the transactional focus with IT-enabled analysis of the activities. There is also a need to recognize that IS are not just flashy and shining diamonds to be shown off on special occasions. IS are, as most diamonds, manufactured products, part of the activities and intended for replacement whenever the diamonds are no longer suitable for serving their purpose - diamonds do not last forever.

Attention has now focused upon the role of human error both in the development and in the operation of complex processes. Human Error, Safety and Systems Development gathers contributions from practitioners and researchers presenting and discussing leading edge techniques that can be used to mitigate the impact of error (both system and human) on safety-critical systems. Some of these contributions can be easily integrated into existing systems engineering practices while others provide a more theoretical and fundamental perspective on the issues raised by these kinds of interactive systems. Neuware - In Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC, we have tried to create a comprehensive understanding about on-chip interconnect characteristics, design methodologies, layered views on different abstraction levels and finally about applying the interconnect-centric design in system-on-chip design. Traditionally, on-chip communication design has been done using rather ad-hoc and informal approaches that fail to meet some of the challenges posed by next-generation SOC designs, such as performance and throughput, power and energy, reliability, predictability, synchronization, and management of concurrency. To address these challenges, it is critical to take a global view of the communication problem, and decompose it along lines that make it more tractable. We believe that a layered approach similar to that defined by the communication networks community should also be used for on-chip communication design. The design issues are handled on physical and circuit layer, logic and architecture layer, and from system design methodology and tools point of view. Formal communication modeling and refinement is used to bridge the communication layers, and network-centric modeling of multiprocessor on-chip networks and socket-based design will serve the development of platforms for SoC and NoC integration. Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC is concluded by two application examples: interconnect and memory organization in SoCs for advanced set-top boxes and TV, and a case study in NoC platform design for more generic applications.
