Since the very first workshop, held at the prestigious Instituto de Fisica Teorica in Sao Paulo, and organized by the same organizer of the 1989 workshop, Professor Valdir Casaca Aguilera-Navarro, the meeting has taken place annually six times in Latin America, four in Europe and three in the United States. Its principal objective has been to innitiate and nurture collaborative research networks of scientists interested in the IDultidisciplinary aspects of many-body theory applied to problems in con densed-matter physics. Financial as well as moral support is gratefully appreciated by all: of the CLAF in Rio, the CNPq in Brasilia, the FAPESP and the FUNDUNESP in Sao Paulo, and the U.S. Army Research Office in Durham, NC, USA.

Neuware - In recent years, the techniques of electron microscopy have developed so widely and rapidly that they now cover the fields of research once the unique ll:panage of sister research techniques such as biochemistry, physiology, immunology, X-ray diffraction, etc. It is now possible to reach molecular and submolecular levels, making this technique indispensable in every type of research. Electron microscopy alone often provides enough information to solve given problems. In the field of the connective tissue matrix, knowledge of the molecular structure of collagen, pro teoglycans and elastin and their interaction has been to a large extent elucidated by electron microscopy. The field over which electron microscopy ranges in the investigation of the connective tissue matrix is so wide that the aim of this volume is to collect the main ultrastructural acquisitions disseminated in various journals and monographs in one book. The intent ofthis volume is to: (a) integrate different and new microscopic methods and review the results of such an integrative approach; (b) present a comprehensive ultrastructural account of selected aspects of the field; (c) point out gaps or controversial topics in our knowledge; (d) outline pertinent future research and expansion of the subject.

The philosophy behind the volume and the presentation of each chapter remains at the high level reflected in our earlier volumes: to be current, pedagogical, and critical. The first chapters, as always, address a subject related to in-vivo biology. Gabby Elgavish addresses NMR spectroscopy of the intact heart. lain Campbell and colleagues present a state-of-the-art description of NMR methods for probing enzyme kinetics in intact cells and tissues. Klaus Mobius and Wolfgang Lubitz have produced a thorough review of the principles and applications of ENDOR spectroscopy in photobiology and biochemistry including discussions of liquid and solid state ENDOR as well as CIDEP-enhanced ENDOR. The final chapter by Hans Vogel and Sture Forsen addresses a contemporary problem in inorganic biochemistry, namely cation binding to calcium binding proteins. We are pleased to announce that a special forthcoming volume will be devoted entirely to the subject of 'Spin Labeling: Theory and Applications (3rd compendium).' A substantial degree of progress has occurred in this important area of ESR in biology since the last treatise on the subject in 1979. Lastly, we acknowledge our colleagues in the field who continue to support this excellent series both as subscribers and contributors. We pledge to continue servicing the community as long as the need exists.

Neuware - There is much evidence to suggest that prostaglandins may have a physiological role to play in the control of thyroid gland metabolism, although the precise nature of this role remains to be defined. Prostaglandins have been found in normal thyroid tissue, and there is evidence of increased levels in some, but not all, cases of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. which may account for the associated diarrhea. Exogenous prostaglandins, like TSH, bind to thyroid plasma mem branes, stimulate the adenylate cyclase-cyclic AMP system, thyroid hormone secretion, iodide organification, colloid droplet formation, glucose oxidation, and 32p incorporation into phospholipids. Prosta glandins of the E series are the most potent, although their maximal effects are generally less than the maximal effects of TSH. The interrelationships existing between TSH and prostaglandins have been the subject of intensive investigation, but as yet no one uni fying concept has emerged. TSH and prostaglandins have been shown to occupy different receptors on the thyroid plasma membrane. Al though TSH can increase intracellular prostaglandin levels, probably as a result of increased synthesis, prostaglandins do not appear to be essential intermediates in TSH action on adenylate cyclase. The pos sibility that prostaglandins are part of a negative feedback system con trolling TSH action is, as yet, a tentative hypothesis, and further work will be required to unravel the interrelationships between these sub stances that now appear to be far more complex than has been envisaged thus far.

It seems possible that the prediction of the National Science Foun dation that ultrasonic techniques may be used as frequently as X-ray techniques by the end of the decade may indeed be fulfilled. The annual scientific meeting of the American Institute of Ultra sound in Medicine is the only meeting held regularly on the North American continent and devoted solely to the diagnostic use of ultrasound. Under these circumstances it is not surprising to find that both the attendance at these meetings and the number of papers submitted for presentation, are increasing markedly each year. The papers presented at these meetings probably reflect the 'state-of-the-Art' reasonably accurately. The Proceedings of these annual meetings are therefore a valuable record of the current state of ultrasonic diagnostic techniques in the U.S.A. Even though it is not possible to print in extenso every paper presented at the meeting, an attempt has been made with this volume, by increasing the length of the papers printed in abstract form, to enable the reader to obtain an overall view of current developments and research on this continent in all fields of ultrasonic medical diagnostic technology. Speed of publication is essential if this volume is to contain current information.

A memory chip, a DRAM, may have up to 64 million bit locations on a surface of a few square centimeters. Each new generation of integrated circuit- generations are measured by factors of four in overall complexity -requires a substantial increase in density from the current technology, added precision, a decrease of the size of geometric features, and an increase in the total usable surface. The microelectronic industry has set the trend. Ultra large funds have been invested in the construction of new plants to produce the ultra large-scale circuits with utmost precision under the most severe conditions. The decrease in feature size to submicrons -0.7 micron is quickly becoming availabl- does not only bring technological problems. New design problems arise as well. The elements from which microelectronic circuits are build, transistors and interconnects, have different shape and behave differently than before. Phenomena that could be neglected in a four micron technology, such as the non-uniformity of the doping profile in a transistor, or the mutual capacitance between two wires, now play an important role in circuit design. This situation does not make the life of the electronic designer easier: he has to take many more parasitic effects into account, up to the point that his ideal design will not function as originally planned.

Sommer feld emphasized that the names of Planck and Bohr would be connected forever with the efforts that had been made to understand the physics and the theory of spectral lines. Another period of almost 60 years has elapsed since the first edition of Sommerfeld's famous monograph. As the editors of this monograph, Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy, we feel that the present period is best characterized by the large variety of new spec troscopic methods that have been invented in the last decades. Spectroscopy has always been involved in the field of research on atomic structure and the interaction of light and atoms. The development of new spectroscopic methods (i.e., new as compared to the traditional optical methods) has led to many outstanding achievements, which, together with the increase of activity over the last decades, appear as a kind of renaissance of atomic spectroscopy.

Thus, it is not surprising that these approaches have been applied quite successfully to kinetic obser vations. Nevertheless, many ideas and methods were developed indepen dently in various fields of science. More often than not, investi gators working in one area have not been aware of relevant advances in others. In order to facilitate the desirable exchange of ideas, a one-day symposium was held in Toronto in conjunction with the XIth International Congress of Biochemistry. Biochemists, pharmacolo gists, and statisticians came together and discussed many of the topics presented in this volume. Participants in the symposium believed that it would be use ful to publish a collection of the presentations together with some additional material. The present volume is the result. It is an attempt to convey some of the interdisciplinary concerns involv ing mechanistic, and especially kinetic, model building. The coverage is by no means exhaustive: many principles, methods, and problems are not included. Even the applications are limited to biochemistry and pharmacology. Still, the symposium highlighted areas of current interest. These included questions of weighting, robust parameter estimation, pooled data analysis, model identification, and the design of experiments. These topics, which are of interest in many fields of science, are discus3ed also in the present volume.

Neuware - This Volume contains the papers presented by twenty-eight invited speakers at the symposium entitled, 'Genetic Manipulation of Woody Plants,' held at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, from June 21-25, 1987. Also included are abstracts of contributed poster papers presented during the meeting. That the molecular biology of woody plants is a rapidly expanding field is attested to by the large attendance and high level of enthusiasm generated at the conference. Leading scientists from throughout the world discussed challenging problems and presented new insights into the devel opment of in vitro culture systems, techniques for DNA analysis and manipulation, gene vector systems, and experimental systems that will lead to a clearer understanding of gene expression and regulation for woody plant species. The presence at the conference of both invited speakers and other scientists who work with nonwoody plant species also added depth to the discussions and applicability of the information presented at the conference. The editors want to commend the speakers for their well-organized and informative talks, and feel particularly indebted to the late Dr. Alexander Hollaender and others on the planning committee who assist ed in the selection of the invited speakers.
