And, there are two major reasons why intuition and economics are not like oil and water. First, economics concerns itself with decision making, and decisions are made in the brain. The human brain is the size of a grapefruit, weighing three pounds with approximately 180 billion neurons, each physically independent but interacting with the other neurons. What we call intuition is, like decision making, a natural information processing function of the brain. Second, despite the current emphasis on quantitative analysis and deductive logic there is a rich history of economists speaking about intuition. First, the human brain, specifically the neocortex, has a left and right hemisphere. The specialized analytical style of the left hemisphere and the specialized intuitive style of the right hemispheres complement each other.

Tristram Engelhardt, Jr. Since that time it has been a pleasure to get to know the life and work of Elisha Bartlett. I am pleased to be complet…ing this book in the bicentennial year of Bartlett's birth. Bartlett was born in 1804 in Smithfield, Rhode Island, less than twenty-five miles from Worcester, Massachusetts, my present home-a short journey even in Bartlett's day. I have been able to walk at some of the sites to which Bartlett continually returned during his life. Visiting Bartlett's grave in the Slatersville cemetery has been an inspiration for the preparation of this book. Proximity to several institutions with rich holdings in Bartlett's works and in nineteenth-century American history of medicine greatly facilitated my research. First, though, I want to acknowledge the College of the Holy Cross for supporting my sabbatical leave for the academic year 2003-2004. The American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, Massachusetts, was generous in giving me access to its remarkable resources. I was able to find many of Bartlett's published works and other nineteenth-century medical literature there, and the entire library staff provided quick and able research assistance.

The authors also propose a method to discriminate the seismic tsunamis from landslide tsunamis based on the observed runup heights, and demonstrate it for the recent tsunamis. Power et al. report the tsunamis generated by the 2003 Fiordland, New Zealand, earthquake (M 7. 2). This earthquake generated two kinds of tsunamis; a local large (4-5 m) tsunami generated by rockslide in a sound, and a smaller tsunami generated by earthquake fa aulting and detected on tide gauges in Australia. Three papers discuss volcanic tsunamis in the western Pacific region. Nishimura et al. report the tsunami from the 1994 eruption of Rabaul volcanoes.

One of the central themes of the book is a general, abstract framework for developing new systems of program synthesis by adapting proofs-as-programs to new contexts. Framework-oriented approaches that facilitate analogous - proaches to building systems for solving particular problems have been popular and successful. Hippocrates recommended the use of topical cooling to stop bleeding. F…ay used cooling of the extremities for patients with tumors in the 1930s. It wasn't until the 1950s, when the effects of hypothermia on systemic oxygen metabolism became better defined, that systemic hypothermia became a commonly used modality, particularly for cardiac surgery. Hypothermia was used for protection (treatment before the insult) and preservation (treatment during the insult) of the heart and entire organism during planned operative ischemia. Shortly thereafter, attempts were made to use hypothermia for resuscitation (treatment after the insult) from cardiac arrest and for management of head trauma. At that time, it was felt that moderate hypothermia (28-32OC) was needed. This was difficult to achieve and manage. Multiple complications were noted. Consequently, therapeutic, resuscitative hypothermia lay dormant for many years while mild (32-35°C) to moderate hypothermia became common for many cardiothoracic and neurosurgical procedures. In the early 1990s, it was found that mild hypothermia, even after cardiac arrest, had benefit for the brain. Similar results were found with head trauma. This lead to a burst of enthusiasm for research into resuscitative hypothermia for a variety of insults, most of which have tissue ischemia as a major component.

These requirements are best met by the tool superhard materials (diamond and diamond-like cubic boron nitride). Ceramics based on silicon carbide, aluminum and boron oxides as well as on titanium, silicon and aluminum nitrides offer promise as tool materials. Tungsten-containing cemented carbides are still considered as suitable tool materials. Hi- hardness and high strength composites based on the above materials fit all the requirements imposed by machining jobs when manufacturing elements of machinery, in particular those operating under the extreme conditions of high temperatures and loads. These elements are produced of difficult-- machine high-alloy steels, nickel refractory alloys, high-tech ceramics, materials with metallic and non-metallic coatings having improved wear resistance, as well as of special polymeric and glass-ceramic materials. Materials science at high pressure deals with the use of high-pressure techniques for the development and production of unique materials whose preparation at ambient pressure is impossible (e. g. , diamond, cubic boron nitride, etc. ) or of materials with properties exceeding those of materials produced at ambient pressure (e. g. , high-temperature superconductors).

The prototypical cases are InAs on GaAs(001) and Ge on Si(001), though other materials combinations also exhibit this phenomenon. When the 3D islands are embedded within epitaxiallayers of a material that has a wider band gap,the carriers within the islands are con ned by the potential barriers that surround each island, forming an array of quantum dots (QDs). Such structures have been produced for both basic physics studies and device fab- cation, including QD lasers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) operating at the c- mercially important wavelengths of 1.3 µ m and 1.55 µ m. On a more speculative level, QD ensembles have been suggested as a possible pathway for the solid-state implementation of a quantum computer. Although some of the principles of qu- tum computing have been veri ed by other means, the practical utilization of this new computingparadigmmay warrant some sort of solid state architecture. QDs are seen as possible components of such a computer, as evidenced by a number of papersappearingintheliteratureproposingQD-basedarchitecturesandworkshops that are being organized to explore these possibilities.

Die meisten dieser Eigenschaften werden von der Gesellschaft als negativ angesehen; daher… ist es keine Bagatelle, jemanden als Psychopathen zu diagnostizieren. Wie bei jeder psychiatrischen Störung basiert die Diagnose auf zusammengetragenen Indizien dafür, dass eine Person zumindest die Minimalkriterien der Persönlichkeitsstörung erfüllt. Bei Fällen aus meinen eigenen Akten sind die jeweiligen Personen sorgfältig auf der Basis umfangreicher Informationen aus Interviews und den Akten diagnostiziert worden. Allerdings habe ich diese Personen durch die Veränderung von Einzelheiten und das Entfernen von Identifikationsmerkmalen unkenntlich gemacht, ohne jedoch die zu treffende Aussage zu verfälschen. Wenn auch das Thema dieses Buches Psychopathie ist, so sind doch nicht alle hier beschriebenen Personen Psychopathen. Viele der verwendeten Beispiele stammen aus öffentlich zugänglichen Berichten, den Nachrichtenmedien und persönlichen Gesprächen, und ich kann nicht sicher sein, dass die jeweils in Frage stehenden Personen Psychopathen sind, selbst wenn sie von anderen so bezeichnet worden sind. In jedem Falle stehen aber die belegten Aussagen über einen Verhaltensaspekt der jeweiligen Person mit dem Konzept der Psychopathie in Einklang, oder sie illustrieren einen für die Persönlichkeitsstörung zentralen Charakterzug oder ein typisches Verhalten. Solche Personen könnten Psychopathen sein oder auch nicht. Aber die Berichte über ihr Verhalten sind ein nützliches Vehikel, um die verschiedenen Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen zu erörtern, die Psychopathie definieren.
