Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is a free translation of a set of notes published originally in Portuguese in 1971. They were translated for a course in the College of Differential Geome try, ICTP, Trieste, 1989. In the English translation we omitted a chapter on the Frobenius theorem and an appendix on the nonexistence of a complete hyperbolic plane in euclidean 3-space (Hilbert's theorem). For the present edition, we introduced a chapter on line integrals. In Chapter 1 we introduce the differential forms in Rn. We only assume an elementary knowledge of calculus, and the chapter can be used as a basis for a course on differential forms for 'users' of Mathematics. In Chapter 2 we start integrating differential forms of degree one along curves in Rn. This already allows some applications of the ideas of Chapter 1. This material is not used in the rest of the book. In Chapter 3 we present the basic notions of differentiable manifolds. It is useful (but not essential) that the reader be familiar with the notion ofa regular surface in R3. In Chapter 4 we introduce the notion of manifold with boundary and prove Stokes theorem and Poincare's lemma. Starting from this basic material, we could follow any of the possi ble routes for applications: Topology, Differential Geometry, Mechanics, Lie Groups, etc. We have chosen Differential Geometry. For simplicity, we re stricted ourselves to surfaces.

There is a strong evidence that the coherent structure in turbulent shear flows is reminiscent of nonlinear stability waves. As such, the interest in nonlinear stability waves has increased not only for the understandingofthe latterstages of the laminar-turbulent transition process, but also for understanding the coherent structures in turbulent flows. Also. the advances in computers have made direct numerical simulation possible at Low-Reynolds numbers and large-eddy simulation possible at high Reynolds numbers. This made first-principles prediction of turbulence-generated noise feasible. Therefore, this book aims at presenting a graduate-level introductory study of turbulence while accounting for such recent views of concern to researchers. This book is an outgrowth oflecture notes on the subject offered to graduate students in engineering. Neuware - Image segmentation is generally the first task in any automated image understanding application, such as autonomous vehicle navigation, object recognition, photointerpretation, etc. All subsequent tasks, such as feature extraction, object detection, and object recognition, rely heavily on the quality of segmentation. One of the fundamental weaknesses of current image segmentation algorithms is their inability to adapt the segmentation process as real-world changes are reflected in the image. Only after numerous modifications to an algorithm's control parameters can any current image segmentation technique be used to handle the diversity of images encountered in real-world applications. Genetic Learning for Adaptive Image Segmentation presents the first closed-loop image segmentation system that incorporates genetic and other algorithms to adapt the segmentation process to changes in image characteristics caused by variable environmental conditions, such as time of day, time of year, weather, etc. Image segmentation performance is evaluated using multiple measures of segmentation quality. These quality measures include global characteristics of the entire image as well as local features of individual object regions in the image. This adaptive image segmentation system provides continuous adaptation to normal environmental variations, exhibits learning capabilities, and provides robust performance when interacting with a dynamic environment. This research is directed towards adapting the performance of a well known existing segmentation algorithm (Phoenix) across a wide variety of environmental conditions which cause changes in the image characteristics. The book presents a large number of experimental results and compares performance with standard techniques used in computer vision for both consistency and quality of segmentation results. These results demonstrate, (a) the ability to adapt the segmentation performance in both indoor and outdoor color imagery, and (b) that learning from experience can be used to improve the segmentation performance over time.

Neuware - These two volumes contain the proceedings of the Workshop on Transition, Turbulence and Combustion, sponsored by the Insti tute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during June 7 to July 2, 1993. Volume I contains the contributions from the transi tion research, and Volume II contains the contributions from both the turbulence and combustion research. This is the third workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, the second in 1991, and their proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the titles 'Instability and Transition' (edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt) and 'Instability, Transition and Turbulence' (edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar and C. L. Streett) respectively. The objectives of these workshops are to expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of transition, turbulence and combustion, and to acquaint the academic commu nity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC. It is hoped these will foster con tinued interactions, and accelerate progress in elucidating the funda mental phenomena of transition, turbulence and combustion. The research areas of interest in transition covered the full range of the subject: linear and nonlinear stability, direct and large-eddy simulation and phenomenological modeling of the transition zone.

Of the known greenhouse gases, political attention to date has been primarily focused on carbon dioxide (C0 ) and the 2 CFCs - the latter because of their interaction with stratospheric ozone. The other greenhouse gases, notably methane (CH ), nitrous 4 oxide (N 0), HCFCs, HFCs and tropospheric ozone and its precur 2 sors nitrogen oxides (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), may appear collectively to be of equal importance for global warming but have attracted less attention. Nevertheless, a comprehensive approach to climate change respon se, taking into account all sources and sinks of all greenhouse gases, is explicitly allowed in the Framework Convention on Clima te Change. The Netherlands' policy on climate already addresses all greenhouse gases. In order to stimulate the development of international climate policy on this subject, the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment supported the initative of organizing an international symposium on the science and policy of the non-C0 greenhouse gases. An important rationale behind 2 this initative was recognizing that for the non-C0 greenhouse 2 gases, abatement options are available that do not only address other environmental problems but that also do not require the major structural changes in society that an effective CO policy 2 may.
