Neuware - The design of this book is based on teaching the ]SP (Jackson Structured Pro gramming) methodology to undergaduates and postgraduates over a period of a number of years. I am grateful for the comments and feedback that have been provided by students who have taken these courses. The aim of the book is to provide readers with an understanding of the concepts behind the ]SP methodology in order that they may apply it for themselves; simply using the notation is not sufficient, it must be used appropriately. The answer to the question 'Why is this wrong ' can lead to a greater understanding than a sim ple response to 'Is this right '. I have included illegal structures as 'under standable mistakes' in the early sections for this reason. It is not necessary for readers of this text to have experience with any par ticular programming language; indeed, one of the virtues of ]SP is that it is lan guage independent. Examples have been given in Pascal, C and COBOL as these are languages which students of ]SP are likely to have met in the course of their studies, or will be meeting while they are learning ]SP. The COBOL lan guage is widely used in industry in a ]SP development environment.…

Neuware - This book takes a somewhat different view of international or diplomatic history by concentrating on the more profound elements of sino-foreign relations, namely the economic and the commercial, especially with regard to Britain and France. The immediate post-revolutionary period in China is viewed here in the wider context of Britain and France's post-imperial decline and expressions such as 'imperialism imprisoned' and 'captive capitalism' are some new and interchangeable terms employed in this context. In contrast to the traditional interpretation that Chinese policies regarding the old imperial powers involved nationalization of foreign companies through the expropriation of their property, this study shows that almost no such practice took place. Rather, instances of appropriation only occurred following an indirect, subtle and protracted process. It is precisely because of the uniqueness of the process and its relatively long duration that the new regime in China succeeded in achieving its goals, perhaps even exceeding them. This study is based on hitherto inaccessible public, private and company archives in Britain, France and China.…

Neuware - Bringing the eastern European economies in transition (defined more precisely in the Introduction) under the economic, political, and secu rity umbrella of the European Union (ED) has been an ambition of many of these countries from the very start of the so-called annus mirabilis in 1989. The road to gratification of this aspiration since then has been rather bumpy, however one wants to look at recent events. Indeed, since 1989 the relationship between the EU and the economies in transition has been ebbing and flowing with the evolution of two main strands of policy stances in the EU. One has been deep skepticism about bringing these countries into the Union at all in any foreseeable future. This in spite of the fact that, after long hesitation, in mid 1993 the EU Member States committed themselves eventually to explore accession with selected transition economies, as well as Cyprus and Malta. The other has been their evolving attitude toward their own integration endeavors. Hence the dilemmas, in the EU's parlance, of the 'deepening versus widening' conundrum. That indeed constitutes the paramount issue addressed in the present investigation.…

This is the fifth event in a series initiated in Zurich in 1989 followed by Palo Alto (1990), Stockholm (1993), and Vancouver (1994). This workshop provides an international forum for the exchange of information on protocols for high-speed networks. The workshop focus on problems related to the e:fficient transmission of multimedia application data using high-speed networks and internetworks. Protocol for High-Speed Networks is a 'working conference'. That explains we have privileged high quality papers describing on-going research and novel ideas. The number of selected papers was kept low in order to leave room for discussion on each paper. Together with the technical sessions, working sessions were organized on hot topics. We would like to thank all the authors for their interest. We also thank the Program Committee members for the Ievel of effort in the reviewingprocess and in the workshop technical program organization. Neuware - The clinical efficacy of glucocorticoids in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease has been confirmed in a multitude of controlled monocentre and multicentre studies as well as from observations of the clinical course of the disease. Although, in the past, the treatment recommendations, dose regimen, substance selection and mode of administration were deduced principally from clinical trials, in recent years experimental research has yielded a mass of therapeutically significant new results. This seeks to optimize the clinical effects of the steroids and minimize their adverse events on a rational basis by the application of the knowledge obtained in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models, taking into account the different types of protein binding and the intrinsic activity of the various glucocorticoids. However, the transfer of this type of `disease-adapted differential glucocorticoid treatment' into a clinical context involves a critical examination of the `received' notions that have characterized steroid treatment in the past, such as strictly circadian administration or time-related dose reduction, as well as proof of the clinical superiority of the new therapeutic approaches. This book, the proceedings of a workshop on Glucocorticoid Treatment held in Strasbourg, France, identifies the current status of existing therapeutic concepts in inflammatory bowel disease, presents the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions in connection with the specific pharmacological properties of steroids with reference to substance differences and different modes of administration, and demonstrates their therapeutic significance.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - It is an honour and a pleasure to welcome you all at this 20th annual International Symposium on Blood Transfusion in the Netherlands. This year you celebrate its 20th anniversary and I congratulate the Staff of the Blood Bank Noord Nederland and especially Dr. Smit Sibinga for this great achievement. As most of you know, the name of the person of Dr. Smit Sibinga is unbreakably con nected with the annual symposium in Groningen which he has organized each year from the very start, 20 years ago. The reputation of any symposium depends heavily on the quality of the lectures. I think it is not possible to organize 20 symposia in a row if the topics lack actual relevance and the speakers are not of excellent reputation. Dr. Smit Sibinga has proven to have a keen eye for selecting interesting themes and eminent speakers. Although a lot of different topics have been dealt with in the past 20 years, which each attracted the attention of a different group in the field of blood transfusion, it is not surprising that after a tradition of 20 years several speakers but also a lot of attendees are not for the first time in Groningen to participate in this event. It gives the symposium a unique atmosphere of intimacy. It is not hard to admit that most of the newer developments in transfusion medicine take place outside the Netherlands.…

It also serves as introductory documentation for a Fortran 90 software package for nonlinear systems and global optimization. The subject of the monograph is deterministic, automatically verified or r- orous methods. In such methods, directed rounding and computational fix- point theory are combined with exhaustive search (branch and bound) te- niques. Completion of such an algorithm with a list of solutions constitutes a rigorous mathematical proof that all of the solutions within the original search region are within the output list. The monograph is appropriate as an introduction to research and technology in the area, as a desk reference, or as a graduate-level course reference. To that end, the second meeting 'Helicobacter pylori: Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure' was organized in June 1996 in Ottawa, Canada, following the successful format of the first such meeting held in Amelia Island, Florida, in 1993. The meeting again focused on all timely aspects of H. pylori research.
