Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) provides a standard machine processable notation for describing hardware. VHDL is the result of a collaborative effort between IBM, Intermetrics, and Texas Instruments; sponsored by the Very High Speed Integrated Cir cuits (VHSIC) program office of the Department of Defense, beginning in 1981. Today it is an IEEE standard (1076-1987), and several simulators and other automated support tools for it are available commercially. By providing a standard notation for describing hardware, especially in the early stages of the hardware design process, VHDL is expected to reduce both the time lag and the cost involved in building new systems and upgrading existing ones. VHDL is the result of an evolutionary approach to language devel opment starting with high level hardware description languages existing in 1981. It has a decidedly programming language flavor, resulting both from the orientation of hardware languages of that time, and from a ma jor requirement that VHDL use Ada constructs wherever appropriate. During the 1980's there has been an increasing current of research into high level specification languages for systems, particularly in the software area, and new methods of utilizing specifications in systems de velopment. This activity is worldwide and includes, for example, object oriented design, various rigorous development methods, mathematical verification, and synthesis from high level specifications. Neuware - This treatise had its origins in the authors' strong opinion that the discovery of new drugs, especially of innovative therapeutic agents, really does not happen as a spontaneous sequel to investiga tive research, no matter how penetrating such research may be. Rather, it seemed to us that the discovery of innovative therapeutic agents was a very active process, existing in and of itself, and demanding full attention-it was not simply a passive, dependent by-process of investigative research. And yet, many researchers some close confreres of the authors, others more distant-believed otherwise. We felt that their view reflected unrealistic thinking and that reality probably lay closer to what Beyer' maintained: We are taught to believe that if we can understand a disease it should be easy enough to figure out, say, the molecular configuration of a definitive receptor mechanism somewhere along the line and to design a specific drug . . . . And so we start out to understand the disease but never get around to doing much about therapy. The authors very soon realized that there was essentially no quantitive information available on just where and how innovative therapeutic agents were discovered. There were only anecdotal accounts, and these were able to be selected and presented in ways that could be used to defend any point of view. …

This be comes increasingly important as full-length receptors are overexpressed in bacteria or in insect cell systems. A major problem for abundantly expressed proteins will be their purification. In addition to purification protocols, many other details can be found concerning an individual receptor that may not be available in standard texts or monographs. No book of this type is available as a compendium of purification procedures. Receptor Purification provides protocols for the purification of a wide variety of receptors. These include receptors that bind: neurotransmit ters, polypeptide hormones, steroid hormones, and ligands for related members of the steroid supergene family and others, including receptors involved in bacterial motion. The text of this information is substantial, so as to require its publication in two volumes. Consequently, a division was made by grouping receptors by the nature of their ligands. Thus, in Volume One there are contributions on serotonin receptors, adrenergic receptors, the purification of GTP-binding proteins, opioid receptors, neurotensin receptor, luteinizing hormone receptor, human chorionic gonadotropin receptor, follicle stimulating hormone receptor, thyro tropin receptor, prolactin receptor, epidermal growth factor receptor, platelet derived growth factor receptor, colony stimulating factor recep tor, insulin-like growth factor receptors, insulin receptor, fibronectin receptor, interferon receptor, and the cholecystokinin receptor.…

Homa Motamen-Scobi London December 1987 Preface In 1990 both OPEC and the OECD will celebrate their thirtieth anntvers aries. OPEC was founded - rather unnoticed - by oil-producing countries still struggling to gain control over national petroleum resources. Future members were still under colonial rule. The foremost aim of the new organization - years before it was able to make metropolitan newspaper headlines - was stabilizing oil prices. Stability in those days meant prevent ing oil prices from falling in real terms. The OECD was formed by mostly mature industrial economies marking the normalization of the postwar international economy after years of reconstruction, strict trade regulations, etc. The aim of the new organization was to promote 'the highest sustainable growth and employment' in member countries. Incidentally, 1960 was also the year which gave birth to a more loosely defined block in the world community, namely the underdeveloped countries, qS the African colonial empires finally broke up. The two organizations became adversaries in the 1970s in the power struggle over the energy flows of the world.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This work is concerned with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), the most common fatal genetic disease in the Caucasian population. The decade of the 1980s was one of spectacular progress in understanding the genetic and molecu lar basis of CF. The research breakthroughs of the decade began with the first fundamental insights, published in 1981-1983, into the basic cellular pathophysiology of CF with demonstrations of altered ion transport in spe cialized exocrine epithelial tissues (1-3). Research progress shifted into a triumph of 'reverse genetics,' using restriction-fragment-Iength polymor phism DNA technology (4), with the localization of the CF gene to a region of chromosome 7 (5-7). Understanding, accelerated by an explOSion of in vitro methodologies for epithelial cell culture and transformation, allowed and physiological studies (8-11); these focused, controlled biochemical with increasing precision, on the molecular pathology of distal steps in the regulatory pathways for epithelial ion transport (12-19). Finally, the 'end of the beginning' occurred in late 1989 with one of the great achievements of molecular genetics, the isolation and cloning of the CF gene (20). As a result, we now have a CF gene product, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFfR), possessing predicted amino acid sequence, suggested tertiary structure, and possible transmembrane transport function (21). Neuware - This volume, SCIENCE OF SINTERING: NEW DIRECTIONS FOR MATERIALS PROCESSING AND MICROSTRUCTURAL CONTROL, contains the edited Proceedings of the Seventh World Round Table Conference on Sintering, held in Herceg-Novi, Yugoslavia, Aug. 28 - Sept. 1, 1989. It was organized by the International Institute for the Science of Sintering (IISS), headquartered in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Every fourth year since 1969, the Institute has organized such a Round Table Conference on Sintering; each has taken place at some selected location within Yugoslavia. A separate series of IISS Topical Sintering Symposia (Summer Schools) have also been held at four year intervals, but they have been offset by about two years, so they occur between the main Conferences. As a rule, the Topical Sintering Symposia have been devoted to more specific topics and they also take place in different countries. The aim of these Conferences and their related 'Summer Schools' has been to bring together scientists from all over the world who work in various fields of science and technology concerned with sintering and sintered materials. A total of seven IISS Conferences have been held over the period 1969-1989, and they have been supplemented by the four Topical Sintering Symposia held in Yugoslavia, Poland, India and Japan (in 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1987, respectively). This most recent five day Conference addressed the fundamental scientific background as well as the technological state-of-the-art pertinent to science of sintering and high technology sintered materials.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Gallium Arsenide technology has come of age. GaAs integrated circuits are available today as gate arrays with an operating speed in excess of one Gigabits per second. Special purpose GaAs circuits are used in optical fiber digital communications systems for the purpose of regeneration, multiplexing and switching of the optical signals. As advances in fabrication and packaging techniques are made, the operat ing speed will further increase and the cost of production will reach a point where large scale application of GaAs circuits will be economical in these and other systems where speed is paramount. This book is written for students and engineers who wish to enter into this new field of electronics for the first time and who wish to embark on a serious study of the subject of GaAs circuit design. No prior knowledge of GaAs technology is assumed though some previous experience with MOS circuit design will be helpful. A good part of the book is devoted to circuit analysis, to the extent that is possible for non linear circuits. The circuit model of the GaAs transistor is derived from first principles and analytic formulas useful in predicting the approxi mate circuit performance are also derived. Computer simulation is used throughout the book to show the expected performance and to study the effects of parameter variations.…

Neuware - Over the past decade, techniques have been developed and implemented to observe metabolism noninvasively in localized regions of intact, living experimental animals and humans through the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). At the same time, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques developed in the 1970s and refined in this decade have been increasingly applied as a powerful clinical tool to probe human anatomy. Because of the unusual metabolic and physiologic characteristics of malignant tissues, oncology has been one of the primary focuses of the application of both MRS and MRI. Although considerable progress has been made in oncologic applications of magnetic resonance (MR), further research is needed to realize the full potential of MR in this area. Consequently, the 21st Annual Detroit Cancer Symposium entitled 'Magnetic Resonance in Experimental and Clin ical Oncology' was organized to provide a forum for researchers in the field to report the state of the art of MRS and MRI in oncol ogy, to discuss future goals for MRS and MRI in oncology, and to define the research needed to meet those goals. The major emphasis of the symposium was on MRS due to both the recent widespread availability of clinical MRS instrumentation and the extensive amount of animal MRS research performed over the past half decade.…

Neuware - The papersin this volume are as a resultofcontributions given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute heldat L1andinam Building, University CollegeofWales, Aberystwyth, 10 - 23 September 1989. The Institute considered the physical and chemical propertiesof a variety ofcolloidal systems ranging from simple micellar solutions to concentrated colloidal dispersions. The purpose ofthe NATO Advanced Study Institute was to create a forum so that research scientists working in different areas concerned with colloid science could interact. The emphasL oft1'l. ;: contributions were on the interpretation ofthe different experimental and theoretical approach to give information on the structure, dynamics and equilibrium propertiesofthese systems. The application ofseveral different techniques in colloid science have been described; new developments and perspectives have been covered by several authors. The present volume reviews the current stale ofthe art in this area and it is hoped that it will be used as an incentive for further studies particularlywith reference to new areas ofresearch.
