This is evident from the Science Citation Index which lists The Determination of Ionization Constants by A. Albert and E. P. Serjeant (1971) as one of the most widely quoted books in the chemical literature. Although, ultimately, there is no satisfactory alternative to experimental measurement, it is not always convenient or practicable to make the necessary measure ments and calculations. Moreover, the massive pK. compilations currently available provide values for only a small fraction of known or possible acids or bases. For example, the compilations listed in Section 1. 3 give pK. data for some 6 000--8 000 acids, whereas if the conservative estimate is made that there are one hundred different substituent groups available to substitute in the benzene ring of benzoic acid, approximately five million tri-substituted benzoic acids are theoretically possible. Thus we have long felt that it is useful to consider methods by which a pK. value might be predicted as an interim value to within several tenths of a pH unit using arguments based on linear free energy relationships, by analogy, by extrapolation, by interpolation from existing data, or in some other way. This degree of precision may be adequate for many purposes such as the recording of spectra of pure species (as anion, neutral molecule or cation), for selection of conditions favourable to solvent extraction, and for the interpretation of pH-profiles for organic reactions.…

It is also suitable for use as a text in a general cytogenetics course, since the basic features of chromosome structure and behavior are shared by all eukary otes. Because my own background includes plant and animal cytogenet ics, many of the examples are taken from organisms other than the human. Since the book is written from a cytogeneticist's point of view, human syndromes are described only as illustrations of the effects of abnormal chromosome constitutions on the phenotype. The selection of the phenomena to be discussed and of the photographs to illustrate them is, in many cases, subjective and arbitrary and is naturally influenced by my interests and the work done in our laboratory. ' The above paragraph from the Preface of the first edition of this book also fits the present edition. However, so much has happened in five years in cytogenetics that-apart from a couple of pages here and there-the whole book has been rewritten and nine new chapters have been added. The system used in the first edition to cite, whenever possible, the latest and/or the most comprehensive review rather than the original publica tions has been followed here also. Not only would complete literature citations increase the size of the book too much, but many readers have expressed satisfaction with the referencing method used here.…

Happily for the contributors to this volume and myself, this unfortunate fate does not appear to be in store for us. New and important findings will undoubtedly continue to flow in this field during the next few years, but I believe this will increase rather than decrease the usefulness of this volume. As a matter of fact, as we go to press, I am delighted both that I was tempted and that I failed to resist. There are two basic reasons for my enthusiasm about this book, and they both relate to this issue of timeliness. First, each of the contributors has had an opportunity to update the scientific content of the various chapters only a few months before actual publication of this volume. The material presented in this volume is, at publication, contemporary with the current original literature. Briefly, the cultural-test-bias hypothesis contends that all observed group differences in mental test scores are due to a built-in cultural bias of the tests themselves; that is, group score differences are an artifact of current psychomet ric methodology. If the cultural-test-bias hypothesis is ultimately shown to be correct, then the 100 years or so of psychological research on human differences (or differential psychology, the sci entific discipline underlying all applied areas of human psychology including clinical, counseling, school, and industrial psychology) must be reexamined and perhaps dismissed as confounded, contam inated, or otherwise artifactual. In order to continue its existence as a scientific discipline, psychology must confront the cultural-test-bias hypothesis from the solid foundations of data and theory and must not allow the resolution of this issue to occur solely within (and to be determined by) the political Zeitgeist of the times or any singular work, no matter how comprehensive. In his recent volume Bias in Mental Testing (New York: Free Press, 1980), Arthur Jensen provided a thorough review of most of the empirical research relevant to the evaluation of cultural bias in psychological and educational tests that was available at the time that his book was prepared. Nevertheless, Jensen presented only one per spective on those issues in a volume intended not only for the sci entific community but for intelligent laypeople as well.…

When it became clear that the availability of experimental datafor model validation wm next to nothing, the Commission took the initiative to support in the frame of the Solar Energy R&D-programme the construction of Solar Pilot Test Facilities on eight sites in Europe. Each experimental facility consisted of two real solar heating systems with collectors, storage, controls, and msociated piping, but with the dwelling thermal distribution system replaced by a physical load simulator. One of the two systems on each site wm a reference system and wm identical for the eight participating teams. The conference was a sequel to one held three years earlier at Lindau, West Germany, on THE ARTERY AND THE PROCESS OF ARTERIO SCLEROSIS. The earlier conference examined available data and conflicting theories on the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis. A major yield of this gathering was a consensus that smooth muscle cell proliferation in the sub-endothelial space is a fundamental feature of atherogenesis. It was, therefore, decided in a second conference to bring together existing knowledge of arterial smooth muscle and of the structure and function of smooth muscle in general. Accordingly an international and interdisciplinary group of experts were gathered together to assess current knowledge, to attempt reconciliation of disparate data and synthesis of widely scattered information and to identify critical areas of ignorance. The American National Academy of Sciences (Hamberg, Elliott, and Parron, 1982)' through its Institutes of Medicine, has estimated that as many as 50 percent of chronic disease cases can be traced to individual behaviors such as smoking, diet, exercise, etc. Similar conclusions have been reached by a variety of European investigators and institutes. The World Health Organization has also expressed considerable interest in individual behavior in relation to the development of chronic disease. Thus, throughout the NATO countries there has been increased awareness of the relationship between behavior and disease. However, communication among investigators in different countries has been rather limited. Further, many different scientific disciplines including psychology, sociology, medicine, microbiology, statistics, and epidemiology have all developed new and different literatures in this field. One purpose of this book is to bring together contributions from scientists in each of these fields. Much of the variance in individual health behavior occurs across countries rather than within countries. Thus, we can learn much from comparing behavior-disease relationships across countries. To date, there have been few studies which have had an adequate international basis for these comparisons. Interest in behavioral epidemiology is a relatively recent phenomena. Thus, many scientists are entering the field without uniform background, experience, or training. This book discusses approaches common in a variety of NATO countries.…

Neuware - In this volume is presented the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on the theme of Electromagnetic Modelling and Measurements for Analysis and Synthesis Problems. The ASI was held at 11 Ciocco, Castelvecchio Pascoli, Tuscany, Italy, August 10th - 21st, 1987. It has been my good fortune to act as co-director of two of Jozef's previous ASIs, and so I am well acquainted with the JKS format for ASIs. As participants will realise, I did not attend this ASI, and so I only have a partial appreciation of the programme. In particular it has not been possible to include transcripts of any panel discussions which may have taken place. Readers may recall that such transcripts have formed a most interesting and useful part of previous ASI proceedings edited by Jozef Skwirzynski, and helped to convey the spirit of the meetings. Unfortunately it has proved impossible to locate the tapes, despite the best efforts of Jozef's assistant, Barry Stuart. A further dificulty has arisen through the untimely death of Jozef's former deputy and colleague at GEC Research, Ed Pacello, who assisted Jozef with the organisation of the precursor of this ASI. ICIN was the first cardiological institute on the European continent to purchase its own nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscope for the study of myocardial metabolism. Secondly, because I have always been infatuated with this noninvasive technique that can produce cardiac images without ionic radiation and at the same time allows for the study of myocardial metabolism as well. But they are considered to be inaccessible for non-specialists. To remedy this situation, this book gives an intelligible exposition of generalized functions based on Sato's hyperfunction, which is essentially the `boundary value of analytic functions'. An intuitive image -- hyperfunction = vortex layer -- is adopted, and only an elementary knowledge of complex function theory is assumed. The treatment is entirely self-contained. The first part of the book gives a detailed account of fundamental operations such as the four arithmetical operations applicable to hyperfunctions, namely differentiation, integration, and convolution, as well as Fourier transform. Fourier series are seen to be nothing but periodic hyperfunctions. In the second part, based on the general theory, the Hilbert transform and Poisson-Schwarz integral formula are treated and their application to integral equations is studied. A great number of formulas obtained in the course of treatment are summarized as tables in the appendix. In particular, those concerning convolution, the Hilbert transform and Fourier transform contain much new material.
