Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book presents an introduction to stylistics for students of literature. It does not presuppose linguistic knowledge, but it approaches literature in a linguistic way. In the first half it looks at the make-up of a sentence in English and how sentence elements are exploited by literary authors. In the second half it looks at the way in which a text is unified by elements beyond the sentence. The conclusion exemplifies the theory explained in the previous chapters.
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - he 1980s began during a great upswing in the Southwest economy, but what lay ahead was a decade of plummeting oil prices, deflated real estatevaluesandunprecedentedbankfailures. Thethemeofthe Federal T Reserve BankofDallas' second annual conferenceon the Southwesteconomy, 'The 1990s: A Different Decade,' reflected our belief that the beginning ofthe new decade would mark a turn toward economic strength in the Southwest. The conference, held Oct. 26-27, 1989, at Loews Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, brought together more than 250 interested individuals and speakers for anexchangeofinformationand ideas. Topics rangedfrom the currentcondition of the Southwest economy to the factors shaping the future. Theinfluences on the Southwest economy are diverse but interrelated. For example, the Southwest faces a complex dilemma in reforming its educational system. As conference speakers illustrated many times, education reform and the quality ofour schools are closely linked to the region's, if not the nation's, ability to compete in future world markets. These proceedings follow the basic organizational pattern of the confer ence. Keynote and luncheon addresses appear in the first section, General Meetings-The 1990s: ADifferent Decade, which includes speeches by Bobby R. Inman, admiral, United States Navy (retired), and private investor; Robert H. Boykin, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; WilliamH. Cunningham; presidentofthe UniversityofTexas, Austin;and John B. McCoy, chairman and chief executive officer of Banc One Corp. Session One, Meeting the Challenges in Education, provides insight from five experts, who survey the current state ofeducation, past attempts at reform andpossiblesolutions for problemsintheeducationalsystemsofthe Southwest.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Endocrinology is a field in which enormous advances have been made in the last decade; the rate of discovery of new hormones, hormone-like molecules, receptors, and mechanisms of action is continually advancing. The development of techniques in immunology and molecular biology has led to the possibility of describing in detail the gene structure of many of the compounds involved in hormonal systems. Remarkable homology has been shown between oncogene products and various components of the endocrine network, leading to the asser tion that deregulation of hormonal function is involved in the generation and/or development of cancer. We now know that the central nervous system is both a target and a production site of many hormonal products, and that hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors and immunopeptides all act through similar mechanisms. The only second messenger known ten years ago was cAMP; today calcium, derivatives of membrane phospholipids, and protein kinases are also known to be mediators of hormone action. The very concept of hormonal systems has been expanded to include not only endocrine secretions but also para- and autohormones and their mechanisms of action; an understanding of their functions will be central to the immediate future of medicine. The discovery of hormonal molecules and endocrine interactions and the subsequent understanding of hormone related pathophysiology has led to the development of new strategies in medical treatment such as fertility control and the management of diabetes.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The middle years of the nineteenth century saw two crucial develop ments in the history of modern logic: George Boole's algebraic treat ment of logic and Augustus De Morgan's formulation of the logic of relations. The former episode has been studied extensively; the latter, hardly at all. This is a pity, for the most central feature of modern logic may well be its ability to handle relational inferences. De Morgan was the first person to work out an extensive logic of relations, and the purpose of this book is to study this attempt in detail. Augustus De Morgan (1806-1871) was a British mathematician and logician who was Professor of Mathematics at the University of London (now, University College) from 1828 to 1866. A prolific but not highly original mathematician, De Morgan devoted much of his energies to the rather different field of logic. In his Formal Logic (1847) and a series of papers 'On the Syllogism' (1846-1862), he attempted with great ingenuity to reformulate and extend the tradi tional syllogism and to systematize modes of reasoning that lie outside its boundaries. Chief among these is the logic of relations. De Mor gan's interest in relations culminated in his important memoir, 'On the Syllogism: IV and on the Logic of Relations,' read in 1860.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Louis Phlips The stabilisation of primary commodity prices, and the related issue of the stabilisation of export earnings of developing countries, have traditionally been studied without reference to the futures markets (that exist or could exist) for these commodities. These futures markets have in turn been s~udied in isolation. The same is true for the new developments on financial markets. Over the last few years, in particular sine the 1985 tin crisis and the October 1987 stock exchange crisis, it has become evident that there are inter actions between commodity, futures, and financial markets and that these inter actions are very important. The more so as trade on futures and financial markets has shown a spectacular increase. This volume brings together a number of recent and unpublished papers on these interactions by leading specialists (and their students). A first set of papers examines how the use of futures markets could help stabilising export earnings of developing countries and how this compares to the rather unsuccessful UNCTAD type interventions via buffer stocks, pegged prices and cartels. A second set of papers faces the fact, largely ignored in the literature, that commodity prices are determined in foreign currencies, with the result that developing countries suffer from the volatility of exchange rates of these currencies (even in cases where commodity prices are relatively stable). Financial markets are thus explicitly linked to futures and commodity markets.

We believe that, by following the subjeets eovered by the Yearbook in the broad field of nephrology, the praetieing nephrologist and nephrologist-in-training ean stay abreast of a number of rapidly advaneing fields. To improve the quality of the Yearbook, we have appointed an Editorial Board to provfde suggestions for topies and authors. Thus, we have invited 58 outstanding nephrologists from around the world (the list of them is included in this issue of the Yearbook) to identify annually potential topies for the Yearbook. The reply was exeel lent and the contribution quite outstanding. Thus, for the 1992 Yearbook, we reeeived more than 150 suggestions. A number of them will be included in the next issue if they continue to be viewed as eurrent and important. We also invite readers to suggest topies for upeoming issues of the Yearbook. The present issue, the 1991 Yearbook, represents an improvement over previous volumes. We expeet this trend to be maintained in future years. As in previous issues, all ehapters provide a eomplete, aeeurate and up-to-date list of important references. We are grateful to all the authors for their exeellent eontributions and for having fulfilled the deadline in forwarding their manuseript. Our special thanks to Kluwer Aeademie Publishers for the timely publieation of this volume.
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Even the most casual reader leafing through the pages of this book will quickly realize that it is not the thoughts of one indi vidual set down on paper, but rather the synergism of many people. Herbert Goeler of American Cyanamid and Keith Slater of Johns-Manville, the latter now retired, are certainly the brightest stars in my particular customer service galaxy. They have been well-springs of information, thinkers and thought starters, friends and fellow-believers, for almost two decades. Without the encouragement and inspiration they gave me, this book would be much shorter and far less relevant. In 1984, my firm presented Herb and Keith with our special 'Patron Saint' Award; it doesn't say nearly enough for what they have meant to me personally and, through me, to the field of customer service management where I disseminate ideas and guidance as an editor and teacher. Some years ago, the American Management Associations asked me to chair a series of seminars on Customer Service Management in the U. S. and Canada. Through this activity I met many wonderful people who in many cases taught me more than I taught them.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book was written with a dual purpose, as a reference book for practicing engineers and as a textbook for students of prestressed concrete. It represents the fifth generation of books on this subject written by its author. Significant additions and revisions have been made in this edition. Chapters 2 and 3 contain new material intended to assist the engineer in understanding factors affecting the time-dependent properties of the reinforcement and concrete used in prestressing concrete, as well as to facilitate the evaluation of their effects on prestress loss and deflection. Flexural strength, shear strength, and bond of prestressed concrete members were treated in a single chapter in the of flexural strength has third edition. Now, in the fourth edition, the treatment been expanded, with more emphasis on strain compatibility, and placed in Chapter 5 which is devoted to this subject alone. Chapter 6 of this edition, on flexural-shear strength, torsional strength, and bond of prestressed reinforce ment, was expanded to include discussions of Compression Field Theory and torsion that were not treated in the earlier editions. In similar fashion, expanded discussions of loss of prestress, deflection, and partial prestressing now are presented separately, in Chapter 7. Minor additions and revisions have been made to the material contained in the remaining chapters with the exception of xv xvi I PREFACE Chapter 17. This chapter, which is devoted to construction considerations, has important new material on constructibility and tolerances as related to prestressed concrete.
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The use of precast concrete is a well-established construction technique for beams, floors, panels, piles, walls and other structural elements. The advan tages of precasting include excellent quality control, economical large scale production, improved construction productivity (especially in adverse weather conditions) and immediate structure availability. These advantages have been recognized for precast concrete raft pavement units (raft units) since their introduction in the 1930s. In the last ten years there has been a considerable increase in the use ofraft units, especially in their range of applications, their analysis and their design. However, the description of these developments has been published in academicjournals and conference proceedings which are not readily available to practising raft unit pavement design engineers. Pavement design engineers are underincreasingpressure to produce raft unit designs that are inexpensive, long lasting and able to allow reorganization to accommodate changing use and uncertainty offuture loading requirements. This is the first book devoted to raft unit pavements, and will become a standard work of reference.
