Rather, we use selected biological examples to motivate the concepts and techniques used in computational cell biology. There are other excellent sources for material on mathematical cell biology, and so the focus here truly is computer modeling. The target audience for this text is mathematically sophisticated cell biology or neuroscience students or mathematics students who wish to learn about modeling in cell biology. We assume as little mathematical and biological background as we feel we can get away with, and we proceed fairly slowly. Neuware - We wrote this book to introduce graduate students and research workers in various scienti c disciplines to the use of information-theoretic approaches in the analysis of empirical data. These methods allow the data-based selection of a 'best' model and a ranking and weighting of the remaining models in a pre-de ned set. Traditional statistical inference can then be based on this selected best model. However, we now emphasize that information-theoretic approaches allow formal inference to be based on more than one model (m- timodel inference). Such procedures lead to more robust inferences in many cases, and we advocate these approaches throughout the book. The second edition was prepared with three goals in mind. First, we have tried to improve the presentation of the material. Boxes now highlight ess- tial expressions and points. Some reorganization has been done to improve the ow of concepts, and a new chapter has been added. Chapters 2 and 4 have been streamlined in view of the detailed theory provided in Chapter 7. S- ond, concepts related to making formal inferences from more than one model (multimodel inference) have been emphasized throughout the book, but p- ticularly in Chapters 4, 5, and 6. Third, new technical material has been added to Chapters 5 and 6. Well over 100 new references to the technical literature are given. These changes result primarily from our experiences while giving several seminars, workshops, and graduate courses on material in the rst e- tion.

While the three of us were attending the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) Congress in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1997, we discussed the implications of the next Congress being awarded to New Zealand. We agreed to organise a satellite to this congress in an area of mutual interest -the neuroscience of movement and sensation. Australia has a long-standing and enviable reputation in the field of neural mechanisms of sensorimotor control. Arguably this reached its peak with the award of a Nobel Prize to Sir John Eccles in 1963 for his work on synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. Since that time, the subject of neuroscience has progressed considerably. One advance is the exploitation of knowledge acquired from animal experiments to studies on conscious human subjects. In this development, Australians have achieved international prominence, particularly in the areas of kinaesthesia and movement control. This bias is evident in the choice of subject matter for the conference and, subsequently, this book. It was also decided to assign a whole section to muscle mechanics, a subject that is often left out altogether from conferences on motor control. All of the above problems are at least forty years old; all are presumably very hard, certainly none are completely solved; and alllend themselves to extensive computational explorations. The techniques for tackling these problems are various and include proba bilistic methods, combinatorial methods, 'the circle method,' and Diophantine and analytic techniques. Computationally, the main tool is the LLL algorithm for finding small vectors in a lattice.
