Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In the 1960s, it became increasingly clear that more and more information was going to be stored on computers, not on pieces of paper. With these changes in technology and the ways it was used came a need to protect both the systems and the information. For the next ten years, encryption systems of varying strengths were developed, but none proved to be rigorous enough. In 1973, the NBS put out an open call for a new, stronger encryption system that would become the new federal standard. Several years later, IBM responded with a system called Lucifer that came to simply be known as DES (data encryption standard). The strength of an encryption system is best measured by the attacks it is able to withstand, and because DES was the federal standard, many tried to test its limits. (It should also be noted that a number of cryptographers and computer scientists told the NSA that DES was not nearly strong enough and would be easily hacked.) Rogue hackers, usually out to steal as much information as possible, tried to break DES. A number of 'white hat' hackers also tested the system and reported on their successes. Still others attacked DES because they believed it had outlived its effectiveness and was becoming increasingly vulnerable. The sum total of these efforts to use all of the possible keys to break DES over time made for a brute force attack. In 1996, the supposedly uncrackable DES was broken. In this captivating and intriguing book, Matt Curtin charts DES's rise and fall and chronicles the efforts of those who were determined to master it.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Algebraic Geometry often seems very abstract, but in fact it is full of concrete examples and problems. This side of the subject can be approached through the equations of a variety, and the syzygies of these equations are a necessary part of the study. This book is the first textbook-level account of basic examples and techniques in this area. It illustrates the use of syzygies in many concrete geometric considerations, from interpolation to the study of canonical curves. The text has served as a basis for graduate courses by the author at Berkeley, Brandeis, and in Paris. It is also suitable for self-study by a reader who knows a little commutative algebra and algebraic geometry already. As an aid to the reader, the appendices provide summaries of local cohomology and commutative algebra, tying together examples and major results from a wide range of topics.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Recently, there has been a trend toward processors based on the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) design. This is an accessible and all-encompassing compendium on RISC processors, introducing five of them: MIPS, SPARC, PowerPC, ARM, and Intel's 64-bit Itanium. Initial chapters explain differences between the CISC and RISC designs, and the core RISC design principles are clearly discussed. Later chapters provide instruction on MIPS assembly language programming, so that readers can readily learn the concepts and principles introduced earlier. Professionals, programmers, and students in computer architecture and programming courses will find the guide an essential resource.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - There has been a flurry of activity in recent years in the loosely defined area of holomorphic spaces. This book discusses the most well-known and widely used spaces of holomorphic functions in the unit ball of C^n. Spaces discussed include the Bergman spaces, the Hardy spaces, the Bloch space, BMOA, the Dirichlet space, the Besov spaces, and the Lipschitz spaces. Most proofs in the book are new and simpler than the existing ones in the literature. The central idea in almost all these proofs is based on integral representations of holomorphic functions and elementary properties of the Bergman kernel, the Bergman metric, and the automorphism group. The unit ball was chosen as the setting since most results can be achieved there using straightforward formulas without much fuss. The book can be read comfortably by anyone familiar with single variable complex analysis; no prerequisite on several complex variables is required. The author has included exercises at the end of each chapter that vary greatly in the level of difficulty.Kehe Zhu is Professor of Mathematics at State University of New York at Albany. His previous books include Operator Theory in Function Spaces (Marcel Dekker 1990), Theory of Bergman Spaces, with H. Hedenmalm and B. Korenblum (Springer 2000), and An Introduction to Operator Algebras (CRC Press 1993).

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Evolutionary computation is becoming increasingly important for computer vision and pattern recognition and provides a systematic way of synthesis and analysis of object detection and recognition systems. Incorporating 'learning' into recognition systems will enable these systems to automatically generate new features on the fly and cleverly select a good subset of features according to the type of objects and images to which they are applied. This unique monograph investigates evolutionary computational techniques--such as genetic programming, linear genetic programming, coevolutionary genetic programming and genetic algorithms--to automate the synthesis and analysis of object detection and recognition systems. The purpose of incorporating learning into the system design is to avoid the time-consuming process of feature generation and selection and to reduce the cost of building object detection and recognition systems.Researchers, professionals, engineers, and students working in computer vision, pattern recognition, target recognition, machine learning, evolutionary learning, image processing, knowledge discovery and data mining, cybernetics, robotics, automation and psychology will find this well-developed and organized volume an invaluable resource.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Both humanitarian and commercial considerations have spurred intensive search for methods to reduce the time and cost required to develop new therapies. The identification and use of surrogate endpoints, i.e., measures that can replace or supplement other endpoints in evaluations of experimental treatments or other interventions, is a general strategy that has stimulated both enthusiasm and skepticism. Surrogate endpoints are useful when they can be measured earlier, more conveniently, or more frequently than the 'true' endpoints of primary interest. Regulatory agencies around the globe, particularly in the United States, Europe, and Japan, are introducing provisions and policies relating to the use of surrogate endpoints in registration studies. But how can one establish the adequacy of a surrogate What kind of evidence is needed, and what statistical methods portray that evidence most appropriately This book offers a balanced account on this controversial topic. The text presents major developments of the last couple of decades, together with a unified, meta-analytic framework within which surrogates can be evaluated from several angles. Methodological development is coupled with perspectives on various therapeutic areas. Academic views are juxtaposed with standpoints of scientists working in the biopharmaceutical industry as well as of colleagues from the regulatory authorities.Tomasz Burzykowski is Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at the Limburgs Universitair Centrum in Belgium. Dr. Burzykowski has published methodological work on the analysis of survey data, meta-analyses of clinical trials, and validation of surrogate endpoints. He is a co-author of numerous papers applying statistical methods to clinical data in different disease areas (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, dermatology, orthodontics).Geert Molenberghs is Professor of Biostatistics at the Limburgs Universitair Centrum in Belgium. Dr. Molenberghs published methodological work on surrogate markers in clinical trials, categorical data, longitudinal data analysis, and on the analysis of non-response in clinical and epidemiological studies. He serves as Joint Editor for Applied Statistics (2001-2004) and is President of the International Biometric Society (2004-2005). He was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association and received the Guy Medal in Bronze from the Royal Statistical Society. Marc Buyse founded the International Drug Development Institute in 1991. He is Past President of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics, Past President of the Quetelet Society, and Past Board Member of the Society for Clinical Trials. He is currently the Executive Director of IDDI (International Drug Development Institute) and Associate Professor of biostatistics at the Limburgs Universitair Centrum, Center for Statistics, Diepenbeek, Belgium. He has published extensively in the fields of biostatistics and oncology. His research interests include meta-analysis, surrogate endpoints, statistical detection of fraud, and the design and statistical analysis of clinical trials. From the reviews:'A strength of this book is its comprehensive and up-to-date presentation of issues pertinent to the evaluation of surrgoate endpoints. This book makes an important contribution to the clinical trials literature.' Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics, 2006'Many of the chapters deal with real-life data examples and studies involving surrogate outcomes, many written by authors who were directly involved in these studies. The editors have written nice background sections.until a more concise manuscript on this topic is written, this book will remain the most important resource for biostatisticians and researchers in this area.' Debajyoti Sinha for the Journal of the American Statistical Association, December 2006'This book is a reflection of the ongoing debate.
