Neuware -This volume contains the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on 'The Chemical Physics of Fullerenes 10 (and 5) Years Later', which was included in the program of the Enrico Fermi School and held in Varenna, Italy, on June 12-16, 1995. The occasion of the workshop was the lOth birthday of Coo, discovered in molecular beams in the summer of 1985, and the quasi simultaneous 5th anniversary of the synthesis of solid Coo. The motivation, however, was not the celebration of such events, rather the need for a realistic diagnosis of the current situation of fullerene research. The best solution for a constructive discussion was to gather in one place the protagonists of the fullerene adventure from the early discoveries to the present. The NATO Science Committee and the Italian Physical Society have made it possible through their generous financial support and organizational aid, which I wish to acknowledge with special gratitude. Buckminsterfullerene Coo has driven a line of research which, especially after the 1990 discovery, had been considered extremely promising both from the chemistry and material science viewpoints. In spite of this, very recently the funding and support have strongly decreased. Neuware -One of the most active areas of contemporary organic chemistry involves the search for new catalysts that borrow concepts, strategies and even components from enzymes but yet are not found in nature. Such artificial enzymes not only give enormous insights into the mechanisms of enzyme catalysis but also offer the potential for catalyzing a wide range of chemical reactions with no counterpart in nature. Several approaches have been taken in the deVelopment of new catalysts, some based on biological methods and others on synthetic techniques. Site directed mutagenesis has allowed the direct replacement of amino acids in an enzyme with resulting changes in stability, selectivity and mechanism. Recent developments have shown that even non-natural amino acids can be incorporated into proteins and also that enzymes can function effectively in organic solvents. A different biological route to artificial enzymes has exploited the immune system and its ability to generate millions of antibodies to a given antigen. Novel antigens have been designed to mimic the transition states of chemical reactions. Antibodies elicited against these antigens thus contain an active site that is complementary to transition state structure and can potentially catalyze target reactions. A broad range of reactions can now be 6 catalyzed using the method with rate accelerations reaching 10 compared to the control reactions. Protein engineering and catalytic antibodies represent complex solutions to the problem of artificial enzymes. The authors present and discuss connectionist models of cognitive maps which are based on local representation, versus models which are based on distributed representation, as well as connectionist models concerning language and spatial relations. As is well known, Gibson's (1979) ecological approach suggests a view on cognition which is diametrically different from the classical main stream view: perception (and thus cognition) is direct, immediate and needs no internal information processing, and is thus essentially an external process of interaction between an organism and its external environment. The chapter by Harry Heft introduces J. J. Gibson's ecological approach and its implication to the construction of cognitive maps in general and to the issue of wayfinding in particular. According to Heft, main stream cognitive sciences are essentially Cartesian in nature and have not as yet internalized the implications of Darwin's theory of evolution. Gibson, in his ecological approach, has tried to do exactly this. When asked later whether he had considered the consequences of being apprehended and prosecuted, he responded that without his relationship to this particular woman his life had no meaning, and for this reason it made no difference what happened to him. All-too-facile explanations of such events can be devised in terms of neurological imbalances or improper child-rearing practices. But why are suicide, the murder of spouses and lovers, and other crimes of passion so much more prevalent in advanced, urban-industrial cultures, and especially in those where people's value is assessed in terms of socio-economic success and failure And why do the associated psychic disturbances express themselves so prominently in terms of disruption of attitudes toward love relationships It cannot be a mere coincidence that the most heinous crimes are crimes of love. I shall suggest here that the most direct way to understand the most prevalent dysfunctions of the modern psyche is to understand the dysfunctions of eros. The reason for this is twofold. Neuware -In June 25-30, 1995 the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on' PhotoactifOrganic Materials: Science and Applications, devoted to organic materials and their specific responses to the light beam in view of their exploitation in devices was held in Novotel hotel in Avignon, France. It consisted ofplenary lectures, given by leading specialists in tbis field, shorter oral contributions and a poster session. Three working groups discussed more specific aspects related to (i) molecular engineering, (ii) electroluminescence and photorefractive effects as weil as (iii) nonlinear optical response of these materials, respectively. It allowed deeper insights into different problems and aspects of the workshop field. The conclusions of working groups were presented last day by their leaders. These pointed out the progress, problems encountered as weil as possible developments. The presentations have been followed by a plenary, brainstorm . discussion. The talks presented ranged around the working group subjects. Important progress was noted in the field of organic light emitted diodes (LEDls), as discussed and presented by several speakers. Light emission over the entire visible spectrum, from blue to red is possible with organic polymers. Tbis can be done on large, flexible surfaces with low cost. The best organic LEDls show actually the operation life time of 1600 to 1700 hours at room temperature. One expects their commercialization in the near future. Neuware -This book attempts to (i) systematically review the state of the art pertaining to the knowledge on the various levels of structure and catalytic function of Iipases, and (ii) discuss in a simultaneously pragmatic and integrated manner the design and modification of Iipases and the technological aspects of the utilization of Iipases for desired practical purposes. In preliminary assessments of whether the current knowledge of Jipases (and users thereof) would deserve (and benefit from) comprehensive academic and scholastic efforts eventually leading to the production of a formal book, four major issues were addressed: -Need. Although several applications of Iipases have been developped throughout the latest two decades, innovative uses of these enzymes for a wide variety of organic syntheses and modification of existing fats and oils have increased exponentially during the latest five years. Reasons which may partly account for this trend are the increasing availability of Jipases from (genetically engineered) microbial sources coupled with their special capacity to act as catalysts at hydrophilic / hydrophobic interfaces. As a result of the structural characterisation effected during the same period, applications of Jipases can now be developed in a much more rational fashion; however, this purpose will not be fully achieved unless careful attempts to comprehensively clarify and integrate such advances are developed. -Importance. In analogy to electrons in a crystal, EM waves propagating in a structure with a periodically-modulated dielectric constant are organized into photonic bands separated by gaps in which propagating states are forbidden. Proposed applications of such photonic band gap crystals, operating at frequencies from microwave to optical, include zero- threshold lasers, low-loss resonators and cavities, and efficient microwave antennas.
