L'organisation de nos symposia a suivi cette evolution.Nombre de ceux qui y ont participe ont un souvenir emu du ler symposium a Petten en 1975, qui fut une reussite complete.L'organisation et Ie devouement du CCR de Petten y avait beaucoup contribue. Et puis, aussi, c'etait un commencement, c'etait Ie premier de nos symposia . Les symposia suivants, alternativement aux USA et en EUROPE, a rythme sensiblement bi-annuel, ont du faire face progressivement a un besoin plus grand d'echange et de discussion par petits groupes, ainsi qu'a afflux croissant de propositions de communications de valeur. L'organisation a du s'adapter en consequence. Following a brief spell as Professor of Economics at the Free University of Amsterdam, he began a lengthy period of ministerial service in 1952. During his cabinet years, he devised a concept which became known in the Netherlands as the' Zijl stra norm', and which was aImed at keeping the Government's financial deficit in check. He concluded his active political career .as prime minister in 1966-1967. Dr. Zijlstra's career as a politician and central banker covered a period of nearly 30 years during which the economic scene in the N ether lands and in the world underwent wide cyclical ups and downs and impor tant changes of a more long-lasting nature. Successful economic recovery after the Second World War was followed by a period of rapid and rela tively stable economic growth. However, as early as the 1960s the condi tions for the maintenance of equilibrated expansion became less secure. This is a long time when dealing with such actively expanding fields of oceanography as research into small-scale structures and the investigation of hydro physical processes. Over this period new quick-response devices have been developed and successfully used for measurements taken in various ocean areas. Improvements in high-frequency meters used to measure hydrophysical parameters has enabled workers to obtain more accurate absolute values of the fluctuations measured by such devices. In view of this scientific progress, some of the ideas presented in this book now require additional explanation. Great care should be used in dealing with the absolute fluctuation values of hydro physical fields, since the methods used for the determination of the accuracy of the high-frequency measuring devices have been imperfect in the past. Never theless, it would appear that the results of the investigations summarized in this book have not lost their importance, and that the established laws governing small-scale pro cesses in the ocean are of a sufficiently universal nature and, as such, have not been shattered with the qualitative and quantitative advances in devices used for measurements taken in oceans. The authors feel that their work is of interest to English-speaking readers. The appearance of the English translation of the book is, to a very large extent, due to the tremendous amount of editing work brilliantly done by Prof. H. Neuware -Non-commutative integration has its origin in the classical papers of Murray and von Neumann on rings of operators, and was introduced because of unsolved problems in unitary group representations and the elucidation of various aspects of quantum-mechanical formalism, together with formal calculus in such operator rings. These papers emphasized the interest in 1I -factors and pOinted out the remarkable behavior and 1 algebraic structure of the set of all unbounded closed operators a. ffiliated to such rings. The absence of power tools in functional analysis - mainly settled in their definitive form by A. Grothendieck around 1950-195- together with the pathological manipulation of algebraic operations on closed operators in Hilbert spaces, has limited ring-theory to the study of algebras of bounded operators with the main objective the difficult question of classifica tion up to isomorphisms of factors. This material has permitted a rigorous study of discrete systems in statistical mechanics but appears to be less convincing in other domains of physics (in the algebraic approach to field theory, for example).
