Neuware -This book is an exposition of 'Singular Semi-Riemannian Geometry'- the study of a smooth manifold furnished with a degenerate (singular) metric tensor of arbitrary signature. The main topic of interest is those cases where the metric tensor is assumed to be nondegenerate. In the literature, manifolds with degenerate metric tensors have been studied extrinsically as degenerate submanifolds of semi Riemannian manifolds. One major aspect of this book is first to study the intrinsic structure of a manifold with a degenerate metric tensor and then to study it extrinsically by considering it as a degenerate submanifold of a semi-Riemannian manifold. This book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with singular semi Riemannian manifolds in four chapters. In Chapter I, the linear algebra of indefinite real inner product spaces is reviewed. In general, properties of certain geometric tensor fields are obtained purely from the algebraic point of view without referring to their geometric origin. Chapter II is devoted to a review of covariant derivative operators in real vector bundles. Chapter III is the main part of this book where, intrinsically, the Koszul connection is introduced and its curvature identities are obtained. In Chapter IV, an application of Chapter III is made to degenerate submanifolds of semi-Riemannian manifolds and Gauss, Codazzi and Ricci equations are obtained. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Our intention with this book is to extend the efficiency literature to the case of intertemporal models. We do this in steps. First, we introduce static network models which will serve as building blocks for our intertemporal budgeting models and our dynamic models. Next, we devote two chapters to productivity measurements, which we think of as comparative static models. Intertemporal budgeting models and dynamic models are taken up after that. Each chapter, except Chapter One, contains an empirical applica tion. These applications are coauthored with colleagues and stu dents; thanks are due to Runar Brannlund, Yijan He, Julius Hor vath, Pontus Roos, Jerry Whittaker and S. (Lek) Yaisawarng . . Neuware -The International Symposium 'Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading', held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies. 524 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -EDITORS This introduction to the International Handbook of Educational Lead ership and Administration describes some of the motivation for devel oping the book and several assumptions on which is based much of the work represented in its 31 chapters. A synopsis of the contents of those chapters is also provided. SOME KEY ASSUMPTIONS It is sometimes suggested that the search for an adequate understanding of leadership is doomed to fail. After all, there is little evidence of agreement about the concept in spite of prodigious efforts dating back hundreds if not thousands of years. Such a view is captured, for exam ple, in Bennis' observation that: Of all the hazy and confounding areas in social psychology, leadership theory undoubtedly contends for top nomination. Probably more has been written and less is known about lead ership than any other topic in the behavioural sciences. (1959, page 259) We do not find this state of affairs discouraging (nor entirely accurate) and, of course, it did not prevent Bennis from proceeding either. One reason for our desire to continue in the face of such discouraging words is that a great deal of leadership research aspires to develop a general theory, a theory which applies to all or most domains of organized human activity. This aspiration inevitably produces decontextualized and, therefore, abstract categories of practice.
