Second, new approaches for hierarchical pitchmatching compaction are described and the concept of a Minimum Design is introduced. The system for hierarchical compaction is built on top of the leaf cell compaction engine and uses the algorithms implemented for leaf cell compaction in a modular fashion. Third, a new representation for designs called Virtual Interface, which allows for efficient topological specification and representation of hierarchical layouts, is outlined. The Virtual Interface representation binds all of the algorithms and their implementations for leaf and hierarchical compaction into an intuitive and easy-to-use system. Er promovierte 1988 im Bereich der Computerphysik und war anschließend wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe mit den Arbeitsschwerpunkten Modellierung und Simulation. Seit 1993 ist er Professor für Angewandte Mathematik und Computersimulation an der HS Karlsruhe. Für sein didaktisches Konzept wurde der Autor mit dem Preis der G.A. Müller-Stiftung zur Förderung der Qualität der Lehre ausgezeichnet. 2008 wurde ihm der Lehrpreis des Landes Baden-Württemberg auch für seine didaktisch hervorragenden Lehrbücher verliehen. und das nicht nur für FH-Studenten. Ein Werk, dass sich sowohl zum Lernen, als auch zum Nachschlagen hervorragend eignet. Das Buch ist durchgehend gut gegliedert und vor allem ist es verständlich geschrieben, was ich bei vielen anderen Mathebüchern vermisse. Westermann erschlägt nicht mit Seitenlangen Rechnungen, bei denen man nach der dritte Zeile schon nicht mehr weiß, was eigentlich in der ersten stand. Ein gelungenes Lehrbuch, mit dem sogar Mathe Spaß macht! Dieses Buch ist ein äußerst empfehlenswerter Leitfaden für die Mathematik im Grundstudium und eignet sich auch hervorragend als Nachschlagewerk.Was dieses Werk wohl am meisten von den Standard- Mathematikwerken unterscheidet ist der starke Bezug zu verschiedensten Anwendungsbereichen. Westermann gelingt es mit diesem Buch die Mathematik dem Studenten nahezubringen, indem er auf praxisorientierte Beispiele zurückgreift. Die Anwendungsbeispiele sind sehr hilfreich für das Verständnis, da die "abstrakte Rechnerei" zum Werkzeug wird, um reale Probleme zu lösen. Der Aufbau ist sehr gut strukturiert. Themengebiete beginnen mit den oben genannten Anwendungsbeispielen. Die einzelnen Schritte werden ersichtlich dargelegt und mit Beispielen vertieft. Zusätzlich verdeutlichen Graphiken den Sachverhalt. Ein weiterer Bonuspunkt ist, dass es zu allen Themen auch eine Anleitung gibt, die jeweiligen Verfahren mit Maple zu konstruieren. Bevor das nächste Thema angeschnitten wird, erhält man eine Zusammenstellung der Maple-Befehle und das Ganze schließt mit einem Aufgabenteil (Aufgaben zum Rechnen und für Maple) ab, um das gewonnene Wissen zu untermauern. Lösungen sind im Buch dabei, was in vielen anderen Werken leider allzu oft fehlt. Für Maple Anwendungen ist das Verzeichnis von Maple-Befehlen im Buchende sehr hilfreich.
