To aid the process of investigation, the Methods Molecular Biology series has brought together many protocols and has highlighted the useful variations and the pitfalls of the different methods. However, protocols frequently cannot be simply taken from the shelf. Thus the starting sample for a chosen protocol may be unavailable in the correct state or form, or the products of the procedure require a different sort of processing. Therefore the scientist needs more detailed information on the nature and requirements of the enzymes being used. CMOS is employed because the most complex integrated circuits have been realized with this technology for two decades. The most important advantages and drawbacks of continuous-time filters are clearly shown. The transfer function is one of the most important filter parameters but several others (like intermodulation distortion, power-supply rejection ratio, noise level and dynamic range) are fundamental in the design of high-performance systems. Special attention is paid to the practical aspects of the design, which shows the difference between an academic design and an industrial design. A clear understanding of the behavior of the circuits and techniques is preferred over complex equations or interpretation of simulated results. Step-by-step design procedures are very often used to clarify the use of the techniques and topologies. The organization of this text is hierarchical, starting with the design consideration of the basic building blocks and ending with the design of several high-performance continuous-time filters. Most of the circuits have been fabricated, theoretically analyzed and simulated, and silicon measurement results are compared with each other. High-Performance CMOS Continuous-Time Filters can be used as a text book for senior or graduate courses on this topic and can also be useful for industrial engineers as a reference book.…

When I selected the topics to be included, some equally important areas were omitted by necessity, and for this I apologize. My choices have been somewhat eclectic, touching subjects of personal interest (such as osteoclast biology and macrophage electrophysiology) or of current fashion (apopto sis, antigen processing, cell adhesion molecules). The book has also had to encompass areas of a more general flavor to provide balance for the general reader (such as reviews of macrophage development, heterogeneity, and function, and of the surface molecules expressed by macrophages). Recent standardization on bandwidth compression schemes for still images (JPEG) and motion pictures (H.261, R723, MPEG) also encourage the development of VLSI video/image processors for cost-effective solutions. Furthermore, recent trends suggest that the standardization on HDTB bandwidth compression for broadcasting and storage purposes is just around the corner. In terms of device technology, however, the progress achieved in increasing speed is not as high as that achieved by integration. The development of high speed systems is due to architectural effort, rather than device technology. This is why high speed architectures, such as those for special wired logic realization and for multi-processors are of great interest to VLSI system designers. In writing the book, the stress, therefore, was placed above all on lucidity in teaching physical electrochemistry from the beginning. Although this fundamentally undergraduate text continues to find purchasers 20 years after its birth, it has long been clear that a modernized edition should be written, and the plans to do so were the origin of the present book. However, if a new Bockris and Reddy was to be prepared and include the advances of the last 20 years, with the same degree of lucidity as characterized thefirst one, the depth of the development would have to be well short of that needed by professional electrochemists.…
