As with the original volume, several of the papers in this book originated as presentations at one of the meetings of the Structure in Complexity Theory con ference. We are pleased to provide this forum for final, polished versions of these papers. As it turns out, 1994 was a watershed year for the Structures conference, for at this meeting the conference attendees voted to change the conference name to its current name, the Annual IEEE Conference on Computational Complex ity. In voting to remove the expression 'Structure in,' the conferees recognized the recent explosion of techniques and results in computational complexity, and expressed concern that the original conference name might not accurately reflect the current status. This basic result, whose first accepted proof was given by Gauss, lies really at the intersection of the theory of numbers and the theory of equations, and arises also in many other areas of mathematics. The purpose of this book is to examine three pairs of proofs of the theorem from three different areas of mathematics: abstract algebra, complex analysis and topology. The first proof in each pair is fairly straightforward and depends only on what could be considered elementary mathematics. However, each of these first proofs lends itself to generalizations, which in turn, lead to more general results from which the fundamental theorem can be deduced as a direct consequence. These general results constitute the second prooof in each pair. To arrive at each of the proofs, enough of the general theory of each relevant area is developed to understand the proof. In addition to the proofs and techniques themselves, many applications such as the insolvability of the quintic and the trascendence of e and pi are presented. Finally, a series of appendices give six additional proofs including a version of Gauss' original first proof. The authors provide cytoarchitectural data from their own research, and trace trigeminal pathways in human material by means of the Nauta technique. In humans the trigeminal nuclear complex includes the motor nucleus, the principal sensory (pontine) nucleus, the spinal nucleus (subdivided into oral, interpolar and caudal nuclei), and the mesencephalic nucleus and several small nuclei. The supratrigeminal nucleus, as described in various mammals, is not defined in the human brain. The primary afferents to all subdivisions of the trigeminal nuclear complex in humans appear to be entirely ipsilateral. Optical intrinsic signals offer unrivaled temporal and spatial resolution of functional measurements of the exposed brain cortex in animals and humans. Near-infrared spectroscopy and imaging ap proaches permit the noninvasive functional assessment of the human brain at bedside. Main advantages of these optical techniques are the biochemical specificity of the meas urements and the potential of measuring correlates of intracellular and intravascular oxy genation simultaneously. Recent data indicate that one may also measure a more direct correlate of neuronal activity associated with changes in light scattering. In this volume, recent technical progress of the optical method is covered as well as the physiological basis of the measurements. In simultaneous studies, near-infrared spec troscopy measurements are directly compared to other functional methods, especially PET and fMRI and examples are given for new applications of the NIRS-method. Based on re sults obtained with optical methods and other functional techniques the latest in our under standing of the coupling of neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow response is reviewed. This is an important basis for a better understanding of all functional neuroi maging methods which rely on neurovascular coupling such as PET, SPET and fMRI.
