By and large the classical theory assumes that the underlying environment in which evolution transpires is both constant and stable - the theory is in this sense deterministic. There was earlier scattered work by Euler, Listing (who coined the word 'topology'), Mobius and his band, Riemann, Klein, and Betti. Indeed, even as early as 1679, Leibniz indicated the desirability of creating a geometry of the topological type. The establishment of topology (or 'analysis situs' as it was often called at the time) as a coherent theory, however, belongs to Poincare. Curiously, the beginning of general topology, also called 'point set topology,' dates fourteen years later when Frechet published the first abstract treatment of the subject in 1906. Since the beginning of time, or at least the era of Archimedes, smooth manifolds (curves, surfaces, mechanical configurations, the universe) have been a central focus in mathematics. In our bibliography list, which is by far not complete, we included some monographs on the subject [46], [15], [32], [39], [11], [21]. The present book is devoted to the theory of algorithms for a single problem of linear algebra, namely, for the problem of solving systems of linear equations with non-full-rank matrix of coefficients. Major questions concern the interaction between the Banc d'Arguin ecosystem on the one hand and the adjoining systems of the open ocean with its intensive upwelling phenomena and the Sahara desert on the other. Is the Banc d'Arguin ecosystem relatively isolated from its surroundings and does it function as a tropical pocket in a more temperate surrounding, as suggested by Sevrin-Reyssac (1983); or does it interact with both the Sahara and the Atlantic Ocean At the Banc d'Arguin, the area between the estuarine parts and the open ocean is extremely shallow and largely uncharted. Large research vessels cannot penetrate the shallows, whereas small vessels are often unable to negotiate the outer part of the shallow area due to rough weather conditions. Hence, separate teams report on work at the seaward side of this shallow sill and at the landward side. In addition, other teams address different questions, such as the productivity of the seagrass beds and the benthic fauna, the number of birds spending the summer at the Banc d'Arguin, and the distribution of several taxonomic groups of flora and fauna.

Bunzl argues that any successful account of explanation must deal with two very different contexts - one static and one dynamic. Traditionally, theories of explanation have been built for the former of these two contexts. That is to say, they are designed to show how it is that a 'finished' body of scientific knowledge can be put to explanatory use. But finished sciences are few and far between. Real 'explanation' also occurs in a dynamical context in which questions are asked and answers are given as theories are in the process of being constructed. Here, Bunzl argues that attending to explanation produced under these dynamic circumstances undermines prominent features of the theory of explanation produced in the traditional static context.

The major changes have arisen from health and safety and environmental concerns. These involve chemicals and exposure of personnel to air-borne electromagnetic fields and long wave ultraviolet (UY.A). The changes in the acceptability of certain volatile halogenated hydrocar bons which led to the banning of 1, 1, 1 thichloroethane in 1995 were evident in 1993. The present discussions concerning the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in general was also current and has now reached a stage where the effects of these deliberations will become evident over the next few years. Concerns over the exposure of personnel to airborne electromagnetic fields has been current for some years as has discussions to the effects of long wave ultraviolet (UY.A) on human skin. Recommendations as to maximum permit ted exposures over periods of time to both of these phenomena have been put forward and will doubtless form the basis of future legislation on the matter. A number of new specifications have appeared notably EN (European) and ISO specifications and some of these are still in preparation. Modal logic, either as a topic or as a tool, is common to most of the papers in this volume. A number of the papers are con cerned with what may be called well-known or traditional modal systems, but, as a quick glance through this volume will reveal, this by no means implies that they walk the beaten tracks. In deed, such contributions display new directions, new results, and new techniques to obtain familiar results. Much ofthe earlier work in this field was necessarily empirical and many ofthe blends produced were of academic rather than commercial interest. The manner in which two (or more) polymers are compounded together is of vital importance in controlling the properties of blends. Moreover, particular ly through detailed rheological studies, it is becoming apparent that process ing can provide a wide range of blend microstructures. In an extreme, this is exemplified by the in situ formation of fibres resulting from the imposition of predetermined flow fields on blends, when in the solution or melt state. The microstructures produced in this case transform the blend into a true fibre composite; this parallels earlier work on the deformation of metal alloys. This type of processing-structure-property correlation opens up many new possi bilities for innovative applications; for example, the production of stiff fibre composites and blends having anisotropic transport properties, such as novel membranes.
