Neuware - These Proceedings are from the Fifth Annual Meeting of the American Section of the International Society for Heart Research held at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, September 21-24, 1983. The program and abstracts were published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Vol. 15, Supplement 4, September 1983, Academic Press. This Symposium Proceedings consists of three sections. Section I deals with the mechanical factors and their i'nfluence on coronary blood flow in the normal and failing heart. Section II is developed around the area of vascular smooth muscle and the factors that may control it which ultimately play such an important role in the regulation of coronary blood flow. Section III is primarily devoted to the mechanical aspects of the function of the heart in both hypertrophy and failure including the molecular changes in the myocyte, alterations in neural control, and in inotropic responsiveness of the hypertrophied and failing heart. The editors hope that these three areas encompass a significant body of new and ongoing information that will be helpful to those who work in these areas as well as those who treat patients with varying degrees of myocardial failure or with compromised coronary circulations. INTRODUCTION The recent, most impressive verification of the Salam -Weinberg theory of electro-weak interactions through the experimental discovery of the so-called inter mediate bosons represents, at the same time, a success of the general gauge theoretical viewpoints in modern particle physics (quantum chromodynamics, 0CD). This theory leads to a deeper and by far more natural inter pretation of particle interaction and induces, as we shall see, also a profound change in our understanding of nuclear structure.

Neuware - The study of genitourinary tumors is an area of recent rapid growth both in the understanding of disease processes and in the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. During rapid growth phases within any field, it is desirable to reflect on the current 'state of the art'. It is difficult even for experts in reputed areas of advancement to distinguish true advances from false leads, but it is far more difficult yet for those whose expertise lies in other areas to evaluate important advances. Thus, an objective assessment of evolving areas of investigation in the form of a comprehensive review is of considerable value. we have attempted to provide the reader with an over In this volume, view of some of the current areas of investigation in urologic oncology by experts in each area. There often is a tendency for invited papers in books of this nature to lack important critical peer review and therefore, suffer from a lack of objectivity. We have attempted to diminish this problem by the selection of two experts to discuss each subject. We believe that this format has improved the overall quality of the book for two reasons: 1) the know ledge of each contributor that his or her work would be reviewed by a peer 2) the fact that contributions by encourages more rigorous scholarship, and two experts, including the individual insights of each, provides a better per spective for the reader.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - My thoughts about the Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) got started in 1961 along with my attempt to return to Argentina. As I sought my way in Buenos Aires, I visited Carlos Gianantonio whom I had met in Caracas the year before during the Pan American pediatric meetings. At that time he was actively working on HUS which had become an epidemic in Buenos Aires and other parts of Argentina. I was impressed by the team effort and devotion of his group to such heavy demands. They obviously were meeting the challenge at an amazingly high level under a very crippling physical situation with shortages of space, laboratories and equipment. His group together with Dr. Becu, at the time the pathologist at the Children's Hospital of Buenos Aires (we had met through his mother who was instrumental in arranging my return to Buenos Aires), wrote some of the classic papers on HUS. Through the years as Dr. Gianantonio became more involved in general pediatrics, the administrative aspects and its orientation in Latin America, he became known for his deep philosophical questions as to what we are doing and where we are going. His questions have obvious implications regarding an agressive approach to our pediatric nephrology patients.

Neuware - Responsibility for the diagnosis and management of disorders of the pulmonary circulation has become the shared domain of the pulmonologist, cardiologist, surgeon, radiologist, pathologist, and, perhaps most important of all, the internist. It is the general internist who is most likely to care for the majority of patients with lung diseases that secondarily give rise to pulmonary heart disease, and it is the internist who will first evaluate the patient with primary pulmonary hyperten sion or recurrent pulmonary thromboembolism who presents with nonspecific complaints and may manifest subtle and nondiagnostic findings on preliminary evaluation. The burgeoning medical literature concerning aspects of the pulmonary circula tion, both clinical and investigative, is a reflection of the reawakening of great interest in this field and has led to many new developments, both in our understand ing of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology and in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary vascular diseases. This book is an attempt to provide the clinician with a comprehensive overview of pulmonary heart disease from the perspective of experts representing a variety of disciplines. It is intended to be thorough yet clinically relevant. Individuals familiar with some facets of pulmonary heart disease may gain insight into other aspects of this condition, whereas those unfamiliar with this disorder may find this work useful as a general reference or as a resource to address a specific question.
