The use of plant alkaloids to improve memory was a recommendation of Benjamin Rush in his 'Diseases of the Mind' (1812, P. 284), and the mysterious con…tents of lethe, a liquid capable of causing the erasure of earthly memories is found in Egyptian and Greek mythology, as well as described by Dante, remains a still-sought amnesic molecule. The facilitation of learning or improvement of memory has been claimed for several plant-derived substances including coca, chat, caffeine, and nicotine. Hypotheses concerning substances found in the brain and their presumed significance for learning or memory led to the development and use of agents that contained such substances. For example, as observed by William James (1892, P. 132), the emphasis, in Germany during the 1860's, upon phosphorus in the brain for cognitive functions gave rise to the suggestion that foods vii viii CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY OF LEARNING AND MEMORY high in phosphorus content, such as fish, were good for brain function. Phosphorus-containing preparations were advocated for use in cases of poor memory, exhaustion, etc. , and though sometimes useful, probably were effective due to a non-specific stimulant effect. Whether the positive cognitive efficacy of non-specific CNS stimulants such as phosphorus, rosemary, lavender, cubeb berries, etc. were really very different from those investigated in animal experiments (Lashley, 1917) or those documented within recent decades remains to be explored.

It was an added pleasure to accept the chairmanship of the meeting, together with Professors Sensi and Adams. At the same time, the Minister of Education approved the proposal also from the Faculty of Pharmacy, to offer an advanced Course on the tOpic: 'Radiosensitizers of Hypoxic Cells'. This Course was subsequently approved by a special Committee of the NATO Scientific Programme as an Advanced Study Institute. Since the subject matter of both the Conference and the Course are closely inter-related, it was logical to plan the Conference as part of the overall Course. Bringing together specialists from quite different and apparently unrelated fields of research, but all with an interest in the study and application of one single group of drugs, is a novel idea with intriguing possibilities. The volumes of the proceedings include contributions from experts with such diverse interests as synthetic chemistry, mechanism of drug action, parasitology, anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, pharmacology and toxicology, radiation sensitizers for use in radiotherapy and the development of drugs for use in cancer chemotherapy generally.

As scientists interested in improving the safety of the food supply, we are challenged to respond to the general need for exploring: (1) possible adverse consequences of antinutrients and food toxicants; and (2) factors which contribute to the formation and inactivation of undesirable compounds in foods. Medical research offers an excellent analogy. Studies on causes and mechanisms of disease processes are nearly always accompanied by parallel studies on preventive measures and cures. Such an approach offers the greatest possible benefits to the public.

Neuware - Even though artificial insemination is a simple technique that has been practiced for over a century, it has long been carried out under poor conditions due to an inadequate understanding of repro ductive physiology and antagonistic socio-ethical attitudes. Accor dingly, until fairly recently… it was a medical act with a limited scientific basis which was practised more or less clandestinely. The development of semen preservation has totally changed the conditions of artificial insemination, especially in regard to flexibility and safeguards in its application. Although the use of fresh semen continues, it is now clear that the future of arti ficial insemination is closely linked to semen preservation. During the past two decades, semen banks have been developed in many countries. This has most often been the result of the initiative of individual physicians in either the private or public sectors. In France, a national system of semen banks (CECOS) was begun in 1973. Although there has been cooperation within this system in the areas of both research and management, a need to com municate and compare experiences with those from other countries was perceived. Thus, the first International Symposium on Artifi cial Insemination and Semen Preservation was planned and held in Paris, France in April 1979. Thirty-seven countries were represented byihdividuals from many concerned disciplines.

Heute jedoch, nachdem sorgfältige Messungen an Kochern von Seiten der Zellstoff industrie, insbesondere durch Herrn Direktor Dr. -Ing. R. HAAs das Vor handensein von Vorspannungen im Eisenmantel nachgewiesen haben und durch die Hoechster Farbwerke die Quellfähigkeit des Mauerwerkes in folge besonders präparierter Kitte zahlenmäßig festgelegt und abge stimmt werden kann, darf wohl bei dem Ausmauerungsproblem von einigermaßen gesicherten Erfahrungsgrundlagen gesprochen werden. Ich habe es deshalb versucht, fußend auf diesen vorhandenen Erkenntnissen, eine mathematische, physikalisch wohl begründete Theorie zur Berech nung ausgemauerter Gefäße zu entwickeln. Herr Dr. -Ing. K. DIETZ von den Farbwerken Hoechst hat die vorliegende Arbeit durch seine hervor ragenden praktischen und theoretischen Kenntnisse auf dem Ausmaue rungsgebiet wesentlich gefördert und durch viele neue Anregungen die Berechnungsmethode in praktisch ausführbare Bahnen gelenkt. Viel leicht darf hierzu bemerkt werden, daß sich die hier abgeleiteten Gesetze und Formeln seit mehreren Jahren bewährt haben und durch praktische Ausführungen recht gut bestätigt wurden.

Dabei kam ich zur überzeu gung, daß die Karsthydrogeologie sowohl einen Pfeiler der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung des Wassers im Untergrund als auch eine unentbehrliche Hilf…e für die Lösung technischer Probleme darstellt. Sehen wir von kürzeren Zusammenfassungen ab, so ist 'Die Hydrographie des Karstes' von O. LEHMANN (1932) die letzte umfassende Behandlung des Themas. O. LEHMANN brach mit der Methodik seiner Vorgänger, aus de duktiven Schlüssen eine Theorie aufzustellen, und baute sein Werk auf die Untersuchung der physikalischen Bedingungen für die Bewegung des unterirdi schen Wassers in Klüften und Hohlräumen auf. Der Umstand, daß er seine Betrachtungen praktisch bei dem Studium der theoretischen Gesetzmäßig keiten bewenden ließ, wurde ihm zum Verhängnis: Denn, während er eine überaus gründliche physikalische Betrachtung der Vorgänge, ja faktisch eine theoretische Begründung der Karstwasserhydraulik entwickelte und sich in sie vertiefte, verlor er den Blick für die natürlichen Gegebenheiten und die Ein wirkung anderer Faktoren auf den Ablauf und die Entwicklung der unter irdischen Wasserbewegung in Karstgebieten. So endet das Ziel seiner Arbeit, die richtige Deutung der Karstphänomene und ihrer hydrologischen Wirksam keit, tragisch. Alle seine (aufgrund richtiger theoretischer überlegungen) gezo genen Schlußfolgerungen erwiesen sich als unrichtig. Er pries die Untersu chungen von G. KYRLE am Lurhählensystem (1927) als Musterbeispiel der artiger Studien und tat die Ansichten des erfahrenen Höhlenforschers H.
