Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The human brain, wi th its hundred billion or more neurons, is both one of the most complex systems known to man and one of the most important. The last decade has seen an explosion of experimental research on the brain, but little theory of neural networks beyond the study of electrical properties of membranes and small neural circuits. Nonetheless, a number of workers in Japan, the United States and elsewhere have begun to contribute to a theory which provides techniques of mathematical analysis and computer simulation to explore properties of neural systems containing immense numbers of neurons. Recently, it has been gradually recognized that rather independent studies of the dynamics of pattern recognition, pattern format::ion, motor control, self-organization, etc. , in neural systems do in fact make use of common methods. We find that a 'competition and cooperation' type of interaction plays a fundamental role in parallel information processing in the brain. The present volume brings together 23 papers presented at a U. S. -Japan Joint Seminar on 'Competition and Cooperation in Neural Nets' which was designed to catalyze better integration of theory and experiment in these areas. It was held in Kyoto, Japan, February 15-19, 1982, under the joint sponsorship of the U. S. National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Participants included brain theorists, neurophysiologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and physicists. There are seven papers from the U. S.

Neuware - Most of the research incorporated in this monograph was initially undertaken as part of the author's Ph.D. dissertation submitted to the School of Urban and Public Affairs, Carnegie-Mellon University. The research was funded through a Doctoral Dissertation Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The dissertation was a winning entry in the 1979-80 Ph.D. Disser tation Competition of the North American Regional Science Association, funded through a grant from the Economic Development Agency of the U.S. Depart ment of Commerce. Revisions and extensions of the initial research were con ducted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I would like to thank in particular Chang-I Hua for his guidance and direc tion in reviewing this research. In addition, I would like to acknowledge the useful comments provided by Robert Avery, Shelby Stewman, Tong Hun Lee, Swarnjit Arora, and Charles Manski regarding the substance and econometric approaches used in the research. Neuware - Edmund Husserl published in his lifetime only works which represent a compilation of individual phenomenological analyses or which have the character of an introduction to his phenomenology. It always made him uneasy that he did not publish any systematic work in phenomenology. In his later years, from the beginning of the 1920s, he tried several times to write such a work, but in vain. The masterplan for this work, which his assistant Eugen Fink sketched out in 1930/31 is preserved. According to this plan, the Phänomenologie der Instinkte has attracted very little attention in Husserl studies until now, takes a central and fundamental position in the whole system of his mature transcendental phenomenology. In this book, Nam-In Lee reconstructs the Phänomenologie der Instinkte on the basis of the already published works and, above all, of the unpublished manuscripts of Husserl. Moreover, he draws out the consequences which the Phänomenologie der Instinkte bears for the whole system of phenomenology. Transcendental phenomenology, in its form of a genetic phenomenology of which the Phänomenologie der Instinkte is the concluding part, can, according to him, no longer be considered as one-sided philosophy of consciousness in the traditional sense, as it has often been thought of hitherto. Thus, the author presents a new face of phenomenology; one which has scarcely been noticed in the field of Husserl studies until now.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Second USA-USSR Symposium on Fna~e 06 Compo~~e Mat~a Pds. h took place at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, during 9-12 March, 1981. This bilateral program between the U. S. and Soviet Union was organized by Professor George C. Sih of the Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics at Lehigh Uni versity and Dr. Vitauts P. Tamuzs of the Institute of Polymer Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR in Riga. The First Symposium was held in 1978 at Jurmala near the coast of Riga Bay. The primary reasons for initiating this series of Symposia were to dissemi nate present knowledge, to promote interchange of ideas, and to stimulate addi tional studies on the development of composite materials between the U. S. and USSR. Both countries have a vested interest in developing the capability to assess and utilize the attractive mechanical properties of composites so that they can be tailor-made to meet specific design requirements. Despite the in creasing number of published papers and articles, there is no communication more effective than on a person-to-person basis. It is with this objective in mind that a small group of engineers and scientists from the U. S. and USSR have planned to meet every two years to report recent progress on composite material research. The size of this group is approximately sixty (60) participants. The presentation involves about forty (40) technical papers which are published in volume.
