Most of volumes 2 and 3 can be understood without knowing volume 1 in detail. A general kowledge of algorith mic principles as laid out in chapter 1 or in many other books on algorithms and data structures suffices for most parts of volumes 2 and 3. The specific prerequisites for volumes 2 and 3 are listed in the prefaces to these volumes. In all three volumes we present and analyse many important efficient algorithms for the fundamental computa tional problems in the area. Efficiency is measured by the running time on a realistic model of a computing machine which we present in chapter I. Most of the algorithms presented are very recent inven tions; after all computer science is a very young field. There are hardly any theorems in this book which are older than 20 years and at least fifty percent of the material is younger than 10 years.

It is an organophosphorous insecticide having a broad range of insecti cidal sp…ectrum comparable to that of methyl parathion, and its toxicity to mammals and fish is low enough to make its handling of less concern. In 1959 the pesticide research group of Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. was successful in synthesizing Sumithion, which had been code-numbered S-l102-A. Since then, the pesticide staffs of the company have been using their constant efforts in evaluation and practical development of the insecticide in various fields of application under different conditions of the world. Today, Sumithion is an insecticide most extensively used in Japan, being indispensable for field crops, industrial crops, and forestry protec tion besides public health purposes. In many other countries of the world, usage of Sumithion is now so extended that it has come to be known as a typical organophosphorus insecticide together with methyl parathion and malathion. Much of the information accumulated on Sumithion is here published by the members of Sumitomo engaged in the research and development of the compound.

Believing that the emergence of Dynamics is a critically important link in the history of mathematical science, we present this study with the primary goal of providing a guide to the relevant works in the aforemen tioned period. We try above all to make the contents of the works readily accessible and we try to make clear the historical connections among many of the pertinent ideas, especially those pertaining to Dynamics in many degrees of freedom. But along the way we discuss other ideas on emerging subjects such as Calculus, Linear Analysis, Differential Equations, Special Functions, and Elasticity Theory, with which Vibration Theory is deeply interwound. Many of these ideas are elementary but they appear in a surprising context: For example the eigenvalue problem does not arise in the context of special solutions to linear problems-it appears as a condition for isochronous vibrations.

Each volume in the Progress sequence is strongly thematic, in that it is limited to some well-defined domain of cognitive developmental research (e.g., logical and mathematical development, development of learning). All Progress volumes will be edited collections. Editors of such collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to have their books published either as contributions to the Progress sequence or as separate volumes. All books written by one author or a small group of authors are being published as separate volumes within the series.

Prostaglandins have been found in normal thyroid tissue, and there is evidence of increased l…evels in some, but not all, cases of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. which may account for the associated diarrhea. Exogenous prostaglandins, like TSH, bind to thyroid plasma mem branes, stimulate the adenylate cyclase-cyclic AMP system, thyroid hormone secretion, iodide organification, colloid droplet formation, glucose oxidation, and 32p incorporation into phospholipids. Prosta glandins of the E series are the most potent, although their maximal effects are generally less than the maximal effects of TSH. The interrelationships existing between TSH and prostaglandins have been the subject of intensive investigation, but as yet no one uni fying concept has emerged. TSH and prostaglandins have been shown to occupy different receptors on the thyroid plasma membrane. Al though TSH can increase intracellular prostaglandin levels, probably as a result of increased synthesis, prostaglandins do not appear to be essential intermediates in TSH action on adenylate cyclase. The pos sibility that prostaglandins are part of a negative feedback system con trolling TSH action is, as yet, a tentative hypothesis, and further work will be required to unravel the interrelationships between these sub stances that now appear to be far more complex than has been envisaged thus far.

The twenty-five years which have elapsed since the IRE was started ten years after the ending of World War II would seem to be just long enough to make this possible, though when the IRE celebrates its fiftieth Jubilee in the year 2004 some of the trends which now seem so definite may themselves have died away to be replaced by others which can now be only dimly conceived. Another reason for this publication is the quality and standing in the world of education and scholarship of the two editors and their contributors.
