Nanoparticles possess an array of unique properties associated with their core materials, including distinctive magnetic, photonic and electronic behavior. This behavior can be controlled and applied through monolayer functionalization and assembly strategies, making nanoparticles both scaffolds and building blocks for nanotechnology. The diverse structures and properties of nanoparticles makes them useful tools for both fundamental studies and pragmatic applications in a range of disciplines. The generic architectures can be utilised to rapidly and effortlessly generate system-on-chip cores, which support numerous application requirements, most importantly, different modes of operation and encryption and decryption capabilities. In addition, efficient silicon SHA-1, SHA-2 and HMAC hash algorithm architectures are described. A single-chip Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) architecture is also presented that comprises a generic Rijndael design and a highly efficient HMAC-SHA-1 implementation. In the opinion of the authors, highly efficient hardware implementations of cryptographic algorithms are provided in this book. However, these are not hard-fast solutions. Many initial drafts of the chapters published in this book were presented in November 2000 during a two-day conference on Interactive governance: towards a post-parliamentary democracy held in Enschede (The Netherlands). The Netherlands Institute of Governance (NIG) sponsored the . conference. After this conference the organisers discussed the possibility of making a book on the basis of papers presented at this event. In the end it was agreed that such a publication would indeed be worthwhile provided the initial papers were fundamentally revised. Moreover it was agreed that also supplementary chapters should be included, in order to strengthen the international comparative perspective. On this basis authors of the conference papers chapters and envisioned new chapters were invited to (re)submit drafts. The completion of the book, however, was unexpectedly halted by the tragic sudden death of our co-editor and dear friend Oscar van Heffen. In his lifetime he was the driving force behind this project. Without his efforts, insightful comments and helpful suggestions this book, in its present form, would never have been published. The authors have attempted a task that has relevance to the widest possible range of professionals working with children and adolescents. In describing and assessing the fields prevention and promotion they have performed an immense service to researchers in this field, but also to practitioners across the spectrum, from mental health nurses and doctors to teachers and psychologists, from social work professionals to psychiatrists and youth counselors. There are two other key elements that should be emphasized from the outset. The first is that the approach in this book is truly multi-disciplinary, with the authors making a genuine attempt to draw upon knowledge and practice derived from all the relevant disciplines. The second element which makes this book so important is that the authors have worked across countries, to ensure that work in the field of intervention from both North America and from Europe should be included. This is as welcome as it is refreshing. There appear to be so many barriers to true collaboration between the two continents, and so many examples of either North American to what is going on 'across the or European social scientists appearing blind border' that the approach taken here should be wholeheartedly commended. Bone loss is associated with aging in both sexes and is accelerated in women with the onset of menopause. However, bone loss is related to a suite of complex and often synergistically related factors including genetics, pathology, nutrition, mechani cal usage, and lifestyle. It is not surprising that its incidence and severity vary among populations. There has been increasing interest to investigate bone loss and osteoporosis from an anthropological perspective that utilizes a biocultural approach. Biocultural approaches recognize the inter-relationship between biological, cultural, and environmental variables. Anthropological studies also highlight the value of evolutionary and population approaches to the study of bone loss. These approaches are particularly suited to elucidate the multifactorial etiology of bone loss. The idea for this volume came out of a symposium organized by the editors at the 70th annual meeting of The American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Kansas City, Missouri. Many of the symposium participants, along with several additional leading scientists involved in bone and osteoporosis research, are brought together in this volume.
