An amateur equipped with a 30-cm telescope and a CCD camera can easily image objects below magnitude 20 and, from very dark sites, 22 or 23. Such limits would have been within the realm of the 100- and 200-inch reflectors on Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar in the 1950s, but no other observatories. However, even those telescopes took hours to reach such limits, and then the photographic plates had to be developed, fixed, and examined by eye. In the modern era digital images can be obtained in minutes and analyzed 'on the fly' while more images are being downloaded. Developments can be e-mailed to other interested amateurs in real time, during an observing session, so that when a cataclysmic event takes place amateurs worldwide know about it. As recently as the 1980s, even professional astronomers could only dream of such instantaneous communication and proc- sing ability.

I am a fan of Patrick's Caldwell catalog as are most of the amateur astronomers I know, but could a new book be justi ed when the massive, compreh- sive, and wrist-spraining Caldwell tome by Stephen O'Meara covers the subject fully anyway That other book was researched and written over a 5-year period in the pre-9/11 world from 1996 to 2001, and its 484 pages of descriptive text and background data are a joy to peruse, as are Stephen's impressive sketches. OK, the book is far too heavy for the binding and after a few trips outside half the pages in my copy fell out, but apart from that it is an excellent book and surely impossible to improve upon, or even equal, especially in a smaller format book with only half the pages available; at least, that was my initial impression when I mulled over writing another Caldwell book. However, I changed my mind, because a number of events of astronomical signi cance have occurred in the last 10 years. First and foremost backyard imaging of deep sky objects, especially color im- ing, has come on in leaps and bounds in the twenty- rst century.

He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The placement of a maneuverable transducer on the tip of a modified endoscope is the result of relatively recent technologic advances. The transesophageal approach is now a reality for obtaining new information from ultra-sonic images of a beating human heart. Since images obtained by transesophageal echo cardiography are uniformly of excellent quality, it extends the diagnostic potential of echocardiography to the patient who is difficult to image from the conventional chest wall approach. More importantly, transesophageal echocardiography provides a means to acquire useful information in new situations, such as the operating room. When this imaging modality is brought to patients undergoing surgical procedures, surgeons and anesthesiologists have a ready means for assessing cardiac performance during anesthesia, directing various surgical approaches and immediately evaluating the results of surgical repair. Transesophageal echocardiographic techniques represent a major vi vii advance in the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. Never before has there been a means to acquire such important information about the heart during an operative intervention. New questions are being asked and new answers are at hand.

There were about forty participants, and some lively discussions, in spite of the fact that bad weather on the east coast kept some participants from attending, and caused scheduling changes throughout the workshop. Heterogeneous materials can behave strangely, even in simple flow sit uations. For example, a mixture of solid particles in a liquid can exhibit behavior that seems solid-like or fluid-like, and attempting to measure the 'viscosity' of such a mixture leads to contradictions and 'unrepeatable' experiments. Even so, such materials are commonly used in manufacturing and processing.

The reader may object and note that Gauss discovered least squares much earlier; however, I want to distinguish between the problem of parameter estimation, the Gauss problem, and that of Kolmogorov estimation of a process. This sep aration is of more than academic interest as the least squares problem leads to the normal equations, which are numerically ill conditioned, while the process estimation problem in the linear case with appropriate assumptions leads to uniformly asymptotically stable equations for the estimator and the gain. The conditions relate to controlability and observability and will be detailed in this volume. In the present volume, we present a series of lectures on linear and nonlinear sequential filtering theory. The theory is due to Kalman for the linear colored observation noise problem; in the case of white observation noise it is the analog of the continuous-time Kalman-Bucy theory. The discrete time filtering theory requires only modest mathematical tools in counterpoint to the continuous time theory and is aimed at a senior-level undergraduate course. The present book, organized by lectures, is actually based on a course that meets once a week for three hours, with each meeting constituting a lecture.

Surface waves can be classed as Rayleigh or Love waves, depending on their velocity and polarization: the displacements of particles in Rayleigh waves are parallel, and the displacements in Love waves perpendicular, to the vertical plane containing the direction of propagation (some variation from this polarization is possible close to the source or in the presence of horizontal inhomogeneities in the medium). The present work is devoted to the calculation and investigation of Love waves in a vertically layered medium. The method used is based on the spectral theory of linear differential operators. ' This method is much more effective than previously applied methods based on the approximation of the medium by a set of homogeneous layers.

This book describes the development of the first cobalt -60 unit in the United States and the man behind it, Leonard Grimmett. Conceptually conceived before World War II it only became possible because of the development of nuclear reactors during the war. The initial idea was to replace the radium in the contemporary units of the time with cobalt-60, but with the realization that the reactors could produce much more cobalt-60 than originally thought the design of the cobalt-60 unit was drastically changed to take advantage that the application of the inverse square law to cancer radiation treatments would make. Although Grimmett conceived of and published his ideas first, the Canadians built the first units because of the capability of their reactor to produce more suitable cobalt-60 sources. The story tells how Grimmett and the other people involved came together at thetime that the U S Atomic Energy Agency was pushing the use of radioactivity in medicine. But Grimmett died suddenly before his unit could be built and very little information about him was known until recently when various documents have come to light, allowing the full story to be told.

Despite the wealth of numerical data, no reasonably full coliection of instability constants of complex compounds has been made until now. The various individual collections of data are far from complete and in most cases omit references to the source materials. Moreover, the present state of the chemistry of complex compounds most urgently demands the complete systematization of data on instability constants and an extension of work in this field which would take advantage of the latest physico-chemical methods. The present work contains instability constants for 1,381 complex compounds. We have considered it convenient to preface the summary of the instability constants with an introductory section of a general theoretical character. This section deals with methods for the calculation of instability constants from experimental data, the influence of external conditions, such as temperature and ionic strength, on the stability of com plexes, and the principal factors determining the stability of complex compounds in aqueous solution. To date the PCR literature has emphasized six main areas of application: genetic mapping, detection of mutations, genetic polymorphism, transcriptional splicing and regulation, molecular virology and quantitative procedures. The overwhelming focus of quantification of DNA or RNA by PCR has been on human microbiology and oncological problems. The exquisite sensitivity of PCR gives this method the ability to detect extremely rare DNAs, mRNAs, mRNAs in small numbers of cells or in small amounts of tissue, and mRNAs expressed in mixed-cell populations. However, the exact and accurate quantification of specific nucleic acids in biological samples is in spite of numerous publications in that field still a general problem: during the peR process, an unknown initial number of target sequences are used as a template from which a large quantity of specific product can be obtained. Although the amount of product formed is easy to determine, it is difficult to deduce the initial copy number of the target molecule because the efficiency of the peR is largely unknown.

Yet, in so many instances, the results fell far short of expectations.

For these reasons, research on the cellular and molecular aspects of the activation of Iymphocytes by antigens, antigen analogues, Iymphokines and other growth factors has expanded enormously in the last several years. Aseries of conferences, 'The International Conferences on Lymphocyte Activation', has been initiated to meet the growing need for a forum for the discussion of the topics that are included within the area of Iymphocyte activation. This volume represents the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Lymphocyte Activation and Immune Regulation, held on February 18-20, 1988 at Newport Beach, California. The proceedings comprise four major sections. The first deals with the T cell receptors and T cell activation. It includes a model for the T cell receptor interaction with a complex of MHC plus antigen, structure of y c'i T cell receptor and their distinct isotypic forms, the role of zeta chain in the expression and structure of T cell receptors and its role in transmembrane signalling. The special feature of these proceedings was two systematic series of lectures, one by F. Pham of C.E.N., Saclay and CERN, Geneva and the other by G. Rickayzen of the University of Kent, Canterbury. Pham dwelt at length on the applications of the methods of alge braic topology and differential forms to the study of the analytic properties of S-matrix theory, in particular, with reference to the location of singularities of the multiple scattering processes. This exposition was a natural sequel to the lectures of V. L. Teplitz, pub lished in an earlier volume of this series. Rickayzen discus.sed in detail the latest theory of superconductivity. Other lectures were those of Scadron, who dealt with some formal features of potential scattering theory, and B. M. Udgaonkar and A. N. Mitra, who spoke on certain aspects of bootstraps and quark models, respectively. The contributions in pure mathematics in this volume include two lectures by S. K. Singh, one on the field of Mikusinski operators and another on Riemann mapping theorem, and a lecture on cosine func tionals by P. L. Kannappan. One of the highlights of the symposium was a lecture by S. K. Srinivasan who is keeping alive the interest of the Madras group in the theory of stochastic processes and who, in particular, has enlarged the domain of the application of the theory of product densities.
