Neuware -During the last 30 years, face recognition and related problems such as face detection/tracking and facial expression recognition have attracted researchers from both the engineering and psychology communities. In addition, extensive research has been carried out to study hand and body gestures. The understanding of how humans perceive these important cues has significant scientific value and extensive applications. For example, human-computer interaction, visual surveillance, and smart video indexing are active application areas. Aiming towards putting such amazing perception capability onto computer systems, researchers have made substantial progress. However, technological challenges still exist in many aspects. Following a format similar to the IEEE International Workshop on Analysis and Modeling of Faces and Gestures (AMFG) 2003, this one-day workshop (AMFG 2005) provided a focused international forum to bring together well-known researchers and research groups to review the status of recognition, analysis and modeling of faces and gestures, to discuss the challenges that we are facing, and to explore future directions. Overall, 30 papers were selected from 90 submitted manuscripts. The topics of these papers range from feature representation, robust recognition, learning, and 3D modeling to psychology. The goal of this workshop was to bring together researchers from the eld of computer vision whose work is related to human-computer interaction. A wide range of observations in geology and solid-earth geophysics can be - plained in terms of fractal distributions. In this volume a collection of - pers considers the fractal behavior of the Earth's continental crust. The book begins with an excellent introductory chapter by the editor Dr. V.P. Dimri. Surface gravity anomalies are known to exhibit power-law spectral behavior under a wide range of conditions and scales. This is self-affine fractal behavior. Explanations of this behavior remain controversial. In chapter 2 V.P. Dimri and R.P. Srivastava model this behavior using Voronoi tessellations. Another approach to understanding the structure of the continental crust is to use electromagnetic induction experiments. Again the results often exhibit power law spectral behavior. In chapter 3 K. Bahr uses a fractal based random resister network model to explain the observations. Other examples of power-law spectral observations come from a wide range of well logs using various logging tools. In chapter 4 M. Fedi, D. Fiore, and M. La Manna utilize multifractal models to explain the behavior of well logs from the main KTB borehole in Germany. In chapter 5 V.V. Surkov and H. This conference was the tenth in its series, one of the leading forums for sharing the emerging research ndings in this eld. In consultation with the ACSAC Steering Committee, we selected a - member Program Committee. This Program Committee represented a broad spectrum of research expertise to ensure a good balance of research areas, - stitutions and experience while maintaining the high quality of this conference series. This year¿s committee was of the same size as last year but had 19 new faces. We received a total of 173 submissions which is 14% more than last year. Each paper was assigned to at least three and in some cases four ProgramC- mittee members for review. Wherever necessary, the committee members called upon the expertise of their colleagues to ensure the highest possible quality in the reviewing process. As a result, we received 415 reviews from the Program Committee members and their 105 co-reviewers whose names are acknowledged inthe proceedings.Theconferencecommitteeadopteda systematicblind review process to provide a fair assessment of all submissions. In the end, we accepted 65 papers on a broad range of topics giving an acceptance rate of 37.5%. Jaap Schoen published his results only partially himself (see Schoen¿s references in the preface of Usunoff et al. 1997). After his sudden death, due to a diving accident, Jan Voogd and Hans Feirabend of our Neuroregulation group encompassed his cerebellar results in the chapter on the cerebellum and precerebellar nuclei in Paxinos¿ The Human Nervous System (Voogd et al. 1990), while Kamen Usunoff and myself grouped Schoen¿s trigeminal results and presented them together with the background of the outcome of recent animal trigeminal experiments in Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology 136 (Usunoff et al. 1997). Jaap Schoen described his series thoroughly and worked them out in serial drawings of the most important sections. Numerous scientists have consulted this material. Together with the abstracts of the Dutch Anatomical Society and ha- nished descriptions of the different parts of the central nervous system for his thesis,the patternofhis resultsemerged. A large series of results are available that still have to be published. Since Jaap Schoen ¿was one of the few neuroanatomists to apply the Nauta method to - man material¿ (Voogd et al. 1990), his results are highly important for human neuroanatomy. This monograph contains part of his material. These successful students also get free access to ¿all¿ other parts of the OTM program, and only pay a minimal fee for the Doctoral Symposium itself (in fact their attendance is largely sponsored by the other participants!). Later the topics investigated by Hungarian mathematicians broadened considerably, and included topology, operator theory, differential equations, probability, etc. The present volume, the first of two, presents some of the most remarkable results achieved in the twentieth century by Hungarians in analysis, geometry and stochastics. The book is accessible to anyone with a minimum knowledge of mathematics. Since then, it has been hosted successfully by Beijing, China, in 2001, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2002, Singapore in 2003, and Tokyo, Japan, in 2004, and finally Jeju, one of the most beautiful and fantastic islands in Korea. This year, we accepted 181 papers out of 570 submissions including regular and special session papers. The acceptance rate of 32% indicates our commitment to ensuring a very high-quality conference.
