Of the many papers submitted under this theme we were able to identify three core sub-themes: Virtual Heritage, Applied Technologies and Virtual Environments. With a truly international flavor, these sub-themes covered the diverse areas of heritage site and artifact reconstruction and analysis, Australian Aboriginal cultural heritage, training, notions of spirituality, human ¿ computer interaction in virtual environments, 3D modelling, remote collaboration and virtual agents. The RECOMB conference series was founded in 1997 by Sorin Istrail, Pavel Pevzner and Michael Waterman. Its history is summarized in the table herein. The general development of the RECOMB conference series is guided by a Steering Committee. RECOMB 2008 was hosted by the National University of Singapore and held at the University Cultural Centre. The Conference Chair was Limsoon Wong, who was supported by a 16-member-strong Organizing Committee. Out of 193 papers submitted to RECOMB 2008, the Program Committee (PC) selected 34 papers for presentation at the conference. Neuware -Mathematical Control Theory is a branch of Mathematics having as one of its main aims the establishment of a sound mathematical foundation for the c- trol techniques employed in several di erent elds of applications, including engineering,economy,biologyandsoforth. Thesystemsarisingfromthese- plied Sciences are modeled using di erent types of mathematical formalism, primarily involving Ordinary Di erential Equations, or Partial Di erential Equations or Functional Di erential Equations. These equations depend on oneormoreparameters thatcanbevaried,andthusconstitute thecontrol - pect of the problem. The parameters are to be chosen soas to obtain a desired behavior for the system. From the many di erent problems arising in Control Theory, the C. I. M. E. school focused on some aspects of the control and op- mization ofnonlinear, notnecessarilysmooth, dynamical systems. Two points of view were presented: Geometric Control Theory and Nonlinear Control Theory. The C. I. M. E. session was arranged in ve six-hours courses delivered by Professors A. A. Agrachev (SISSA-ISAS, Trieste and Steklov Mathematical Institute, Moscow), A. S. Morse (Yale University, USA), E. D. Sontag (Rutgers University, NJ, USA), H. J. Sussmann (Rutgers University, NJ, USA) and V. I. Utkin (Ohio State University Columbus, OH, USA). We now brie y describe the presentations. Neuware -Overview This book is a philosophical reflection (using mainly Hegel, in addition to 1 Adam Smith, Kant, Marx and Catholic Social Thought) about the soc- political dimension of economics. In it I both agree and disagree with the slogan that ¿the least government is the best government. ¿ I agree with the slogan, in particular as it applies to the economic domain. Adam Smith taught us that rational and self-interested individuals, left by themselves, create a more efficient and reliable economic system than one in which the government has a heavy role as was the case in his time with the merc- tile system (Smith, 14, 651). Ludwig von Mises demonstrated the same idea for the communist command economy (Hayek 1935, 87¿130). I d- agree with the above mentioned slogan if it is interpreted as suggesting that we can best forget about the role of the government for a good functioning economy. Instead, I will argue that the government has an important fu- tion in creating the proper regulations and the wise institutional arran- ments which will allow the economy to flourish in a more efficient, fair and humane way. This book is interdisciplinary in nature. It is a philosophical and ethical reflection on economics. Hence, I make use of philosophical ideas, often but not exclusively those of Hegel.
