Neuware -One of the superb characteristics of Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) is that it is an interdisciplinary eld in which researchers and practitioners from a number of areas are involved in a typical project. This also creates a challenge in which the success of a team depends on the participation of users and domain experts who need to interact with researchers and developers of any IDA system. All this is usually re ected in successful projects and of course on the papers that were evaluated by this year¿s program committee from which the nal program has been developed. In our call for papers, we solicited papers on (i) applications and tools, (ii) theory and general principles, and (iii) algorithms and techniques. We received a total of 184 papers, reviewing these was a major challenge. Each paper was assigned to three reviewers. In the end 46 papers were accepted, which are all included in the proceedings and presented at the conference. This year¿s papers re ect the results of applied and theoretical researchfrom a number of disciplines all of which are related to the eld of Intelligent Data Analysis. Neuware -It is both an honor and a pleasure to hold the 27th Annual Meeting of the German Association for Pattern Recognition, DAGM 2005, at the Vienna U- versity of Technology, Austria, organized by the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) Group. We received 122 contributions of which we were able to accept 29 as oral presentations and 31 as posters. Each paper received three reviews, upon which decisions were made based on correctness, presentation, technical depth, scienti c signi cance and originality. The selection as oral or poster presentation does not signify a quality grading but re ects attractiveness to the audience which is also re ected in the order of appearance of papers in these proceedings. The papers are printed in the same order as presented at the symposium and posters are integrated in the corresponding thematic session. In putting these proceedings together, many people played signi cant roles which we would like to acknowledge. First of all our thanks go to the authors who contributed their work to the symposium. It was held in conjunction with DEXA 2005. This conference was organized for the first time in Greenwich, UK, in 2000, and it has been able to attract an increasing number of participants and interest, reflecting the progress made in the field. As in the five previous years, EC-Web 2005 served as a forum that brought together researchers from academia and practitioners from industry to discuss the current state of the art in e-commerce and Web technologies. We are sure that inspirations and new ideas emerged from the intensive discussions that took place during the formal sessions and social events. Keynote addresses, research presentations and discussions during the conference helped to further develop the exchange of ideas among current researchers, developers and practitioners. The conference attracted 139 paper submissions and each paper was reviewed by three Program Committee members. The Program Committee selected 39 papers for presentation and publication (an acceptance rate of 28%). This interest has led us not only to many publications, but also has been the motivation for teaching many courses on this topic over more than 20 years. These courses have undergone considerable changes over time. What we present here, ¿A Course in Credibility Theory and its Applications¿, is the nal product of this evolution. Credibility theory can be seen as the basic paradigm underlying the pricing of insurance products. It resides on the two fundamental concepts ¿individual risk¿ and ¿collective¿ and solves in a rigorous way the problem of how to analyse the information obtained from these sources to arrive at the ¿insurance premium¿. The expression ¿credibility¿ was originally coined for the weight given to the experience from the ¿individual risk¿. Credibility theory as a mathematical discipline borrows its methods from 2 many elds of mathematics, e. g. Bayesian statistics, L Hilbert space te- niques, least squares, and state space modelling to mention only the most important ones. To answer it, I should describe what distinguishes the - proach to analysis presented here from what has by its protagonists been called ¿Modern Analysis¿. ¿Modern Analysis¿ as represented in the works of the Bourbaki group or in the textbooks by Jean Dieudonn¿ e is characterized by its systematic and axiomatic treatment and by its drive towards a high level of abstraction. Given the tendency of many prior treatises on analysis to degenerate into a collection of rather unconnected tricks to solve special problems, this de nitely represented a healthy achievement. In any case, for the development of a consistent and powerful mathematical theory, it seems to be necessary to concentrate solely on the internal problems and structures and to neglect the relations to other elds of scienti c, even of mathematical study for a certain while.
