This book is the result of two parallel lines of research dealing with the same subject - Modeling of Tungsten CVD processes -, which were per formed independently under very different boundary conditions. On the one side, Chris Kleijn, working in an academic research environment, was able to go deep enough into the subject to laya solid foundation and prove the validity of all the assumptions made in his work. On the other side, Christoph Werner, working in the context of an industrial research lab, was able to closely interact with manufacturing and development engineers in a modern submicron semiconductor processing line. Because of these different approaches, the informal collaboration during the course of the projects proved to be extremely helpful to both sides, even though - or perhaps because - different computer codes, different CVD reactors and also slightly different models were used. In spite of the inconsistencies which might arise from this double approach, we feel that the presentation of both sets of results in one book will be very useful for people working in similar projects.

It emerged quite recently that some modern techniques in the theory of function spaces are intimately related to methods in fractal geometry. Special attention is paid to spectral properties of fractal (pseudo)differential operators; in particular we shall play the drum with a fractal layer. In some sense this book may be considered as the fractal twin of [ET96], where we developed adequate methods to handle spectral problems of degenerate n pseudodifferential operators in and in bounded domains. Besides a few special properties of function spaces we relied there on sharp estimates of entropy numbers of compact embeddings between these spaces and their relations to the distribution of eigenvalues. Some of the main assertions of the present book are based on just these techniques but now in a fractal setting. Since virtually nothing of these new methods is available in literature, a substantial part of what we have to say deals with recent developments in the theory of function spaces, also for their own sake. In this respect the book might also be considered as a continuation of [Tri83] and [Tri92].

It is divided into two parts.Part 1 provides an introduction to the theory of variable Lebesgue spaces: Banach function spaces like the classical Lebesgue spaces but with the constant exponent replaced by an exponent function. These spaces arise naturally from the study of partial differential equations and variational integrals with non-standard growth conditions. They have applications to electrorheological fluids in physics and to image reconstruction. After an introduction that sketches history and motivation, the authors develop the function space properties of variable Lebesgue spaces; proofs are modeled on the classical theory. Subsequently, the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is discussed. In the last chapter, other operators from harmonic analysis are considered, such as convolution operators and singular integrals. The text is mostly self-contained, with only some more technical proofs and background material omitted. Part 2 gives an overview of the asymptotic properties of solutions to hyperbolic equations and systems with time-dependent coefficients. First, an overview of known results is given for general scalar hyperbolic equations of higher order with constant coefficients. Then strongly hyperbolic systems with time-dependent coefficients are considered. A feature of the described approach is that oscillations in coefficients are allowed. Propagators for the Cauchy problems are constructed as oscillatory integrals by working in appropriate time-frequency symbol classes. A number of examples is considered and the sharpness of results is discussed. An exemplary treatment of dissipative terms shows how effective lower order terms can change asymptotic properties and thus complements the exposition.

Most attention has gone to the holomorphic automorphic forms, with numerous applications to number theory. Maass, [34], started a systematic study of real analytic automorphic forms. He extended Hecke's relation between automorphic forms and Dirichlet series to real analytic automorphic forms. The names Selberg and Roelcke are connected to the spectral theory of real analytic automorphic forms, see, e. g. , [50], [51]. This culminates in the trace formula of Selberg, see, e. g. , Hejhal, [21]. Automorphicformsarefunctionsontheupperhalfplanewithaspecialtra- formation behavior under a discontinuous group of non-euclidean motions in the upper half plane. One may ask how automorphic forms change if one perturbs this group of motions. This question is discussed by, e. g. , Hejhal, [22], and Phillips and Sarnak, [46]. Hejhal also discusses the e ect of variation of the multiplier s- tem (a function on the discontinuous group that occurs in the description of the transformation behavior of automorphic forms). In [5]-[7] I considered variation of automorphic forms for the full modular group under perturbation of the m- tiplier system. A method based on ideas of Colin de Verdi` ere, [11], [12], gave the meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein and Poincar e series as functions of the eigenvalue and the multiplier system jointly. The present study arose from a plan to extend these results to much more general groups (discrete co nite subgroups of SL (R)).

The Mediterranean region is not only the site of shallow dispersed seismic activity, it is also the site of localized intermediate depth seismic activity, and of some rare deeper events. Active subduc tion is clearly at the origin of Greek intermediate depth seismicity, while the deep activity under Calabria and the Vrancea region in Romania is clearly related to downgoing slabs that have long remained active after the arrest of subduction. The origin of the intermediate and very deep seismicity below Spain is a considerably more complex problem. Several possible explanations of the intermediate depth activity to about 110 km have been proposed, but the origin of the deep (650 km) events studied by BURFORN et a1. remains a mystery since this is the only source of deep activity that is not related in an obvious way to a subduction zone. The problem of seismic source mechanism and seismotectonics cannot be completely separated from that of the mechanical origin of earthquakes. Recent work on this subject has revealed the intimate relation between fault geometry, as observed by field geologists, and the results of inversion of source process from seismic data in the far-field or in the near-field.

The truth, apparently, lies somewhere between these two extremes. Intense research activity in the field of optimization, in particular with reference to robust control issues, has caused it to be regarded as a source of numerous useful, powerful, and flexible tools for the control system designer. The new stream of research is deeply rooted in the well-established framework of linear quadratic gaussian control theory, knowledge ofwhich is an essential requirement for a fruitful understanding of optimization. In addition, there appears to be a widely shared opinion that some results of variational techniques are particularly suited for an approach to nonlinear solutions for complex control problems. For these reasons, even though the first significant achievements in the field were published some forty years ago, a new presentation ofthe basic elements ofclassical optimal control theory from a tutorial point of view seems meaningful and contemporary. This text draws heavily on the content ofthe Italian language textbook 'Con trollo ottimo' published by Pitagora and used in a number of courses at the Politec nico of Milan.

For linear differential equations, integrability is made precise within the framework of differential Galois theory. The connection of these two integrability notions is given by the variational equation (i.e. linearized equation) along a particular integral curve of the Hamiltonian system. The underlying heuristic idea, which motivated the main results presented in this monograph, is that a necessary condition for the integrability of a Hamiltonian system is the integrability of the variational equation along any of its particular integral curves. This idea led to the algebraic non-integrability criteria for Hamiltonian systems. These criteria can be considered as generalizations of classical non-integrability results by Poincaré and Lyapunov, as well as more recent results by Ziglin and Yoshida. Thus, by means of the differential Galois theory it is not only possible to understand all these approaches in a unified way but also to improve them. Several important applications are also included: homogeneous potentials, Bianchi IX cosmological model, three-body problem, Hénon-Heiles system, etc.The book is based on the original joint research of the author with J.M. Peris, J.P. Ramis and C. Simó, but an effort was made to present these achievements in their logical order rather than their historical one. The necessary background on differential Galois theory and Hamiltonian systems is included, and several new problems and conjectures which open new lines of research are proposed.- - -The book is an excellent introduction to non-integrability methods in Hamiltonian mechanics and brings the reader to the forefront of research in the area.
