Neuware - The major objective of this book is to give methods for estimating errors and uncertainties of real measurements: measurements that are performed in industry, commerce, and experimental research. This book is needed because the existing theory of measurement errors was historically developed as an abstract mathematical discipline. As a result, this theory allows estimation of uncertainties of some ideal measurements only and is not applicable to most practical cases. In particular, it is not applicable to single measurements. This situation did not bother mathematicians, whereas engineers, not being bold enough to assert that the mathematical theory of errors cannot satisfy their needs, solved their particular problems in one or another ad hoc manner. Actually, any measurement of a physical quantity is not abstract, but it involves an entirely concrete procedure that is always implemented with concrete te- nical devices-measuring instruments-under concrete conditions. Therefore, to obtain realistic estimates of measurement uncertainties, mathematical methods must be supplemented with methods that make it possible to take into account data on properties of measuring instruments, the conditions under which measu- ments are performed, the measurement procedure, and other features of measu- ments. The importance of the methods of estimating measurement inaccuracies for practice can scarcely be exaggerated. Indeed, in another stage of planning a m- surement or using a measurement result, one must know its error limits or unc- tainty. Inaccuracy of a measurement determines its quality and is related to its cost.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Jan Lambooy retired in October 2002. When Jan was asked how he wanted to celebrate this occasion, he was adamant that no great festivities should take place. Characteristically, Jan wanted just a scientific conference so he 'could learn something from it' and, as he insisted, no great festivities. So that is what we did and a conference was organised in Amsterdam on 25 October 2002, hosted by the Faculty of Economics and Econometrics of the University of Amsterdam. Friends of Jan's from academia in the Netherlands and abroad participated and thus paid homage to Jan, both as a scientist and as a person. We are now very proud to present this festschrift, firstly as the palpable result of this conference and secondly as a token of sincere respect and great affection for Jan. Edited volumes run the danger of being a hotchpotch of contributions on a wide variety of topics. Here, we have explicitly focused on a central theme in contemporary economic geography and regional science, namely therelationship between learning, innovation and clustering. Internationally renowned scientists made both theoretical and empirical contributions to this volume. We think this book constitutes a broad palette of contemporary thinking and research on the relationship between spatial concentration and innovation and hope it will play a significant role in future debates on this issue.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The use of recreational drugs of abuse by large numbers of individuals in this country and abroad has aroused serious concerns about the consequences of this activity. For example, it is recognized that marijuana is currently widely used as a recreational drug in the United States as well as other countries. Similarly, abuse of cocaine, especially crack cocaine, is considered to be an epidemic. 'The war on drugs' by the US Government was directly aimed at the illicit use of cocaine, marijuana, and opiates as well as other drugs of abuse. Furthermore, alcohol is also considered a major problem of abuse in this country as well as in many other countries. It is estimated there are at least 10 million alcoholics in the United States alone. A signi cant portion of those hospitalized with infectious diseases are alcoholics. Similarly, there have been many reports of association between marijuana use and increased susceptibility to infection as well as a re- tion between use of opiates and infections. The relationship between drug abuse and increased incidence of various infections has stimulated increased investi- tion of whether and how such drugs affect immune function, especially imp- tant for resistance against infectious agents. During the last decades, a wide variety of studies have shown that drugs of abuse, including marijuana, cocaine, or opiates, as well as alcohol, alter both neurophysiological as well as pathological responses of individuals.…

Increased impervious area results in greater volumes of runoff, higher flow velocities, and increased pollutant fluxes to local waterways. As we learn more about the negative impacts of these outcomes, it becomes more important to develop and manage land in a smart manner that reduces these impacts. This text provides the reader with background information on hydrology and water quality issues that are necessary to understand many of the environmental problems associated with land development and growth. The variability of runoff' flows and pollutant concentrations, however, makes the performance of simple technologies erratic and predicting and modeling their performance difficult. Chapters on statistics and modeling are included to provide the proper background and tools. The latter chapters of the text cover many of the different technologies that can be employed to address runoff flows and improve water quality. These chapters take a design approach with specific examples provided for many of the management practices. A number of methods are currently available for addressing the problems associated with stormwater runoff quality from urban areas; more continue to be developed as research is advanced and interest in this subject continues to surge.
