Contributors were encouraged to illustrate their protocols with results from their own research and most of them elected to do so. After an introductory chapter, the protocols are arranged in three groups: The first group of twelve methods uses (or can use) whole, native antigens and may therefore be suitable for conformational epitopes; the second group of five uses peptides or peptide libraries; and the third group of eleven requires antigen expressed from recombinant DNA. Within this last group, methods more likely applicable to conformational epitopes are placed first.

It argues that differences in the kind of information being computed, whether lexical, structural or syntactic, play a crucial role in the mapping from grammatical t…heory to parsing algorithms. The direct encoding of homogeneous classes of information has computational and cognitive advantages, which are discussed in detail. Phrase structure is built by using a fast algorithm and compact reference tables. A quantified comparison of different compilation methods shows that lexical and structural information are most compactly represented by separate tables. This finding is reconciled to evidence on the resolution of lexical ambiguity, as an approach to the modularization of information. The same design is applied to the efficient computation of long- distance dependencies. Incremental parsing using bottom-up tabular algorithms is discussed in detail. Finally, locality restrictions are calculated by a parametric algorithm. Students of linguistics, parsing and psycholinguistics will find this book a useful resource on issues related to the implementation of current linguistic theories, using computational and cognitive plausible algorithms.

While there are stilI open issues and divergencies between theory and practice in these fields, the scope of the series started expanding to related fields of growing practical relevance, for example to testing with regard to the B-ISDN protocol reference model, in particular ATM, the ODP reference model, and the Internet protocol suite, as well as to interoperability testing and performance testing. To reflect the extended scope, the program committee agreed on a new name for this series of working conferences, to be applied the first time to the 1996 conference. However, in order to emphasize the tradition of IWPTS, the numbering of this series was continued, such that IWTCS'96 is counted as the 9th International Workshop on Testing of Communicating Systems. As in the years before, the workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practi tioners, furthering the exchange of views, and correlating the work of both sides.
